Hey guys,
I thought I would share my latest discovery. After recent sucess with surface fishing for Murray cod I wanted to find a way with a little more finnesess than blooping a surface walker along.
My 2 local spots recieve alot of fishing presure so i thought something different might temp Mr Cod out of his hole so last night i rigged up a 4inch pop frog on a 2/O wide gape, 1/12th jig and went about flicking it around Yerrabi pond.
the moon was out but the wind was blowing, so I found a sheltered spot along the dam wall and began sending some casts out. I was experimenting with different retrieves and speeds to see what worked. Eventually I settled on a slow role back along the wall its self. Little legs kicking and sending out vibrations the little lure scurried across the surface. The only thing I could really hear was the wind moving the branches of the trees, which sheltered where I was, and the blooping of the little frog.
It took a while, but after much trial and error I got the retrieve and speed right. The gentle plopping was shattered by an almight suck in of air and a slash as the glassy, dark water turned white and broken. The plastic flew into the air as a flash of mottled green erupted from the water. Plop...... the lure lands back.....I pause, heart beating... silence resumes. Nothing more, that frog got away.
I cast back to the same spot, eyes squinting into the moon light. Wack!!!! Another hit, this time hes got my lure in his mouth and makes a turn for his lair. only for me to strike and pull it from his grip....... another chance wasted.
They say its unlucky to take the 3rd light of a match, but for my quarry it was bad luck to have a third stab at a rubber frog!
One last cast, just to try my luck. This time... for sure........ The little frog scurries across the water and Wack! The water turns white, with the same gusto as the first hit, a tail flaps up and over the top. I strike, and sink the hook into the bottom lip of my new nemisis.
With an 8lb leader on I have to be a bit carefull but I maneged to land a very healthy looking Murray cod that pushed around 40-45cm (unconfirmed )
Absolutly chuffed!
The best thing for the night though was seeing surface takes on some of the bugs that were on the water. There is clearly a very healthy population of cod in Yerrabi pond. And although they are unlikley to set any records it is an easily excessable fishery in the middle of canberra.
