  1. I did pump one once while pumping for blood worms. Scared the crap out of us as we'd never seen one (not very common in Victoria ) but i wouldn't target them by pump
  2. Yep thats why i am curious to know if its beyong 2 nm's
  3. Thanks Yowie, thought that might have been it
  4. Is that where they get their name?
  5. there's a couple of decent reds there, no record breakers but a great feed. They are the most annoying species of LJ's too and they have to be big before you get any meat off the buggers, do you know what species they are called?
  6. Wow I thought sole were only out in the deep. Should have eaten similar to a flounder I'd imagine?
  7. Yep I was gonna say the same thing, they are also good for blue swimmers. Love the hat pic, I'm surprised you didn't become too well bonded with your friend and not wanna kill him... But then I bet you had no regrets while chowing down!
  8. Why go outside when u find all that inside? Just inside the heads?
  9. sounds like a great day, I've not gone beyond the 50m mark as I don't have an epirb, woudl you be more than 2 nautical miles out to reach 60M?
  10. LOL, at first I thought you meant stone fish. Pity your mate didn't get to a good fight out of the shark, did it bite or break off?
  11. Don't forget the extra safety gear you need when venturing past the heads (printed chart of the area, V sheet and a few litres of water per person (can't remember how many exactly, i just bring heaps to be safe). I always pick up a mix of mowies, flatties, snapper and other bits and pieces drifting a km or 2 outside north head if you don't feel like cruising too far north.
  12. That is a rare catch around there I'd imagine. Probably a good rule os to know if something is edible or not before bringing it home for the table though
  13. Our long anticipated week of camping at Wangi Point has just drawn to an end with a very hot hour of unpacking the boat and car, I sure do miss that lake breeze already. Not to mention the view from our tent The weather was fantastic, Caravan park probably one of the better ones I've stayed in, but the fishing was not amazing. There is a lot of small stuff around, especially Tarwhine. There's a lot of big whiting around the shallows toward the channel but they seem to just sit in the burley trail and look up at you, we did land one fat one and I had a very upsetting experience of one similar size break my hook at the boat.. yes my hook! Not the 8lb line, but the brand new hook out of the pack... Not sure if I'm allowed to talk down a brand here but I won't be buying that brand again, I'll stick to my normal gamagatsu or mustad long shanks from now on as I lost one more fish to a broken hook later in the week as well using the same pack. Yesterday we got onto a good school of gars which were between 25-33cm so they were fun and fed the camp of 9 back at the tents. We didn't fish as much as we planned and wasted our time with the crab nets, 2 full days produced one star fish in the witches hats... Nets were everywhere but very few were getting pulled up with crabs. In the end we did manage to feed the family and friends for a few meals of bream (up to 35cm) and the biggest tarwhine I've seen at 36cm, it was shaped almost like a snapper at that size, quite a few tarwhine around the 25-30cm mark and one lonesome flathead. I'll try to add in the pic of the whiting when I download the Mrs' camera, I've only every caught King George whiting at that size, I think these warmer water 'ting seem to pull even harder than their southern tasty friends. All in all a fantastic week and very sad to be home thinking about work in the morning. I'd recommend the place to anyone. _________________________________________________________ Found the pic of the whiting, there are some healthy fish in the shallows
  14. Just shows how spoiled we are these days when catching that many fish is a disappointment. I know how you feel but sometimes we just also need to be thankful for the amazing fishing we have at our doorstep, guess it can't always go perfectly Nice report though
  15. You taking the piss there mate or are you for real? With a stench like that I dunno how a pike can taste like whiting?!
  16. If that's the case then tie up to one of the public moorings just before Chinaman's beach past the moorings. Or the moorings near the spit bridge can also produce nice bream and trevally. And you never know this time of year if a big king or nice salmon could be roaming.
  17. What size boat are you hiring? if it can handle it and conditions are right I'd suggest heading to north head for a look and around the markers inside the harbour.
  18. Some say small cuttlefish are even better kingy bait than squid, definitely throw a squid jig into the tackle bag next time
  19. A tasty feed you have there. The swell and wind have not been too friendly lately, especially for me and my 4.3m tinny... Dying to get back outside the harbour. What's the clip thing in the gurnard, or is it just something sitting under him? I'm told they are excellent eating but can't bring myself to kill one with those amazing fins - are they as nice as people say? Might have to try one if they are.
  20. 4lb leader with a 90cm+ croc on the end would be pretty dicey, I fish 15lb flurocarbon when I know the bigger flatties are on the chew, they can make short work of your leader in no time, but if you're not getting broken off then save the heavier leader till you do start getting busted off. What depth of water are you fishing? The absolute number one golden rule of all is to always make sure you're coming in contact with the bottom so don't be afraid to use a heavier jig head in deeper water - unlike other fish, time spent waiting for the jig head to sink is pretty much wasted on flatties unless you're fishing shallow water.

    How to Fish?

If you're getting a lot of little taps but not hooking up it could be more to do with the size of hook you are using. Try a smaller hook (maybe size 6 or even 8 long shank) and you might find that some of those picky fish will hook themselves. Generally you wait for the little taps to become a more solid tug and then set the hooks but there is no perfect science to this, a lot is up to chance. You're right with circle hooks, just lift the rod and wind if you feel the fish.
  22. Good call I reckon, that would explain the ease of capture as well.
  23. wtf... looks like someone dipped his back half in the parramatta river
