I have not posted on this site for a while, but I feel that after reading this thread I should offer some input. Grant, I support your stance 100% that the pros are the source of the problem. How else would you explain areas like Botany Bay and Lake Macquarie where fish stocks are growing rapidly despite being extensively targeted by rec fishos. BECAUSE THE PRO'S ARE GONE!! It's plainly obvious that us rec anglers can continue to fish while the overall fish population thrives all at the same time. All you have to do is remove the pros, a pretty simple equation. Banning the pro's in Sydney will make little difference to the public's access to fresh seafood because only a very small percentage of the seafood that goes through the markets is caught locally. I vehemently oppose the exclusion of rec anglers from Marine Parks but (and I know this sounds extreme) I'd support Marine Parks over continuing to let the pro's slam what's left of the fishery any day. That being said, it's idiotic to exclude rec anglers and equally idiotic zoning a Marine Park whose borders are being patrolled by the pro's as the fish don't understand where the boundary is. I tire of hearing these people have a 'right' to make a living from exploiting the fishery. They don't. Nobody wants to see someone's occupation become redundant but times change and what was acceptable in the past may not be acceptable in the now or in the future. There’s plenty of stakeholders who will try to blur this argument but never forget what a destructive and wasteful practice professional fishing is. Never forget how the pro’s decimated the Kingfish and Salmon fishery with scant regard for the sustainability and future of the fishery. Where’s the Bluefin & Yellowfin Tuna gone? Never forget the tonnes of ‘by-catch’ i.e. juvenile fish that are slaughtered to get those fish into the market. Cheers Lee

Both are very very good reels. have you looked at the Daiwa Calida Kix. What a powerhouse machine for such a small price. Its got saltiga and certate technology and imo its is another reel you should throw into the equation. I would go for a Daiwa Capricorn. Before every one starts saying that the reel is around the $250 mark, check a couple of aussie web sites. Campbells are doing them for $199. The capricorn is a far superior reel than the penn applause, symetre 4000 and the stradic. Give the site sponsors a call and see if they can help out with the price. Cheers Lee

On the hawks nest side of the bay you can always fish up near the boulders. At this time of year there would be massive sized flounders. We have caught them up to the size of hubcaps in that area, but that was from a boat. Otherwise Jimmy's beach or even the beach at hawks nest produces great bream and whiting early in the morning on fresh cockles that are in the sand on the beach. There are heaps of fish up at Port, problem is the amount of water to cover to locate them. If you can get a boat then try the racks and the delbora marina rockwall. Just double check the sanctaury zones as thier are some more appearing. Cheers Lee

Well done mate. It appears that the great name ( I love the name myslef ) DROP BEAR is gaining a following. The drop bear colour is one of the top sp colours up in the tropics for barra's, toga's, jacks and fingers. Well done again. Cheers Lee

mark, Did you keep the skull by any chance? If so drop it in to the Sydney museum. They have some experts that may be able to enlighten you into what its was from. most of the time they are only to willing to help out. Also maybe try taronga zoo as thier knowledge would also lead to the skulls identity. Cheers Lee

Good to hear someone call them blowies again. It takes all of 5 seconds to destroy a 3 inch sp. Also some of my mates over in WA have told me several times that they have caught both huge tailor ( 4kg+ ) and Bonito that have toads in thier stomachs! Jewel did you live there or just visit there. Yeah mate I have played with them before. not a smooth as some of my daiwa's but for the price they are good. Its the old saying " You get what you pay for ". In having said that you do get a very very good reel for such a small outlay. So my two cents worth would be, that I doubt you would find a better reel for the price. Almost everything else in that price range will not stack up. Damm good value i think. Cheers Lee

Don't complain about the toads here in Sydney until you have fished in WA I lived there for sometime and when you see 1000's schooling you will soon realise that we have not got the same problems as our sand groper friends have. The amount of toads I hooked on hb's was amazing. Don't even think about using sp's if toads were about, and bait, well forget that in the estuary's around perth during the days. I just move on if toads are about or if there are fish around then be prepared to loose lures. Hb's are the go to stop the toads, well slow them down at least most of the time. Cheers Lee

Yeah there are a few around at windsor and surrounds at the moment. If you have a canoe you can get to the good water and get thebigger fish that are hiding. heard good reports of 40cm + recently and at least 5+ fish of 40cm + a session. Cheers Lee

Hi mate, Ok for a reel I would suggest - Daiwa Capricorn in either the 2000 or 2500 size. Daiwa Theory in either the 2000 or 2500 size. Shimano Stradic 2500. Penn Slammer 260. As for the rod well there a quite a number of deals going at the moment. There are some bargains at the moment for the Strudwick range and some stores have up to 50% off the rrp. Unfortunately I don't know which stores are doing this. However here are some rods to match the reels to - Shimano - Shimano Raider Finesse Bream Spin 7' 1 piece 2-4kg. Shimano Raider Finesse Bream Spin 7' 6" 2 piece 2-4kg. Shimano Raider Rack Raider Spin 5' 8" 3-5kg. These come in both 1 and 2 piece setups. Steve Starling Shimano Squidgy Barra Spin 6' 6". These are a 4-8kg stick so they may be a bit heavy. Steve Starling Shimano Squidgy Spin 7'. Steve Starling Shimano Stella 6' 6". Steve Starling Shimano Stradic 7'. The Berkley Dropshots are a great rod at such a cheap price. You may possibly be able to pick a Daiwa Procaster if you shop around and they have a varying range from 6', 6'6" and 7' and range from 1-3kg, 2-4kg and 3-5kg. The Daiwa Heartlands are also possibly in reach if you shop around and they have a varying range from 6' and 6'6" and range from 2-3kg, 2-4kg and I think they even go to 4-7kg. Also Pflueger make a dam good rod at a very affordable price. All these rods I have listed are all graphite composite rods and would suit any reel that is mentioned above as well. The best way is to go and look at which rod best suits your purpose and budget. Then once you have selected the rod find a reel that is within your budget. You will then know which setup you like the best once you have it in your hands. Hope this helps Cheers Lee

I normally give my mates travelcalm. But there are actually 2 makes of travel calm. One is the natural and it doesn't work I reckon and the other is in the blue and white packet. Trick with travel calm is to get some into your system the night before. Take 2 tablets 30 ins before going to sleep. Sit around on the lounge and do nothing, don't move just watch tv. Then after 30 mins or so get up and go to bed. You will be able to feel a weird sensation through your body. Then just take 2 more tablets 30 mins before you get on the boat. Its worked for me when I first started getting on boats. Don't use them now but like to have a backup just in case. The other thing I used to do was buy a big packet of minties and eat them. Not one after the other but at regular intervals. that also seemed to help. The biggest problem is by thinking about being sea sick you are halfway there already. Get him to keep his mind off the sickness. Get him to drive the boat. Cheers Lee

Mate some spots for berowra. I fish it regulary but its hard from shore but here is my best spots. On the hornsby side of the river there is heaps of access to fish. There is a couple of warves and pontoons to cast at from shore. Look at pic i have attatached and where it is red is where you will catch fish expecially on a hig tide. Don't get to close to the edge as you can spook the bream. If you can cast at the boats then give it a go. I have caught heaps of bream there in the past from my boat and I love that area. Cheers Lee
