Knew it was going to be a scorcher. So I hit the beach early to grab some weed for a quick arvo session. I thought I should get a bit extra for Seamus and Gianni just in case. 7.30 start work in the garden, and start sweating. 9.30 a pm from Gianni, weed? 12 noon mercury hits 35c that's it, quitting time, dropped the weed off at Gianni's, chat with his mum, and she gave me a much appreciated ice block. 1pm at the spot, berley berley, fish on 32cm. Another drift, fish 32 again, then 3 barely legal that went back. Things went quiet, then I realised my float stopper had moved. Reset to the depth and back at it. Got a good down, a and pulled up tight on a solid fish, I thought could be a PB or dare I say record.. I called out to the other guy fishing, and he came and netted it It only went 37, so there is a bit of work to do. Funny how they shrink, before you get them on the mat. Then I busted off, it was a big fish, but I had to call time. I gave the keepers to Allen, the net man.

The break is in the top third, looks clean.

Where did you catch it?

Balmoral is worth a shot ,Clifton gardens, etc. Avoid North harbour it's a marine protected area no squiding. You can fish there, just no taking shellfish, invertebrates, etc.

I think if nothing else has touched it, something is not right. Fish eat fish, so do birds, rats, feral cats. Seems fishy to me. Could be lead, or mercury, something that gets the top predators

You should read Robertas' Best Ever Blackfish Tips,And go to the breakwall and watch what the people getting fish are doing. I haven't been off the rocks yet, I'm still a newbie. Get your float balanced so only an inch or 2 is showing above water, berley up, and don't be in a hurry. While watching for a down, point the rod towards the float, always leave some slack. Let the float go down, wait, let it go, so you know the fish has it, then lift.

Thanks Scratchie. I wasnt too far west of the bridge, And blackfish are one of the least contaminated according to DPI I would have them once or twice a month. Some of them you can tell have come in from the ocean rocks, square mouth, big lips and lighter colour.

They are a year round option. A lot of guys fish for them when other fish are quite, like kingies in winter. So it just seems like they are seasonal.

That would have been a great fight. I think it was a smart move not to try and get him on board alone. They are known to jump into boats.
