  1. ha, as mentioned, just beating it for a good 20 minutes and rubbing it really firmly into the ground - just softens up the meat. needless to say, I got a few funny looks from the dog walkers!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. Don't be scared to throw a big one out mate, you'd be surprised how often something will have a go at it. Had a big run on a 35cmish tailor the other week when I couldn't get any yakkas!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. Headed out early yesterday on a mates boat. Long day for little reward unfortunately but nice being out in the water. Loaded up on yakkas and squid - and off to test my mates new downrigger around north head. Started harbour side and worked our way right round to bluefish point for not a touch. Nothing of note popping up on the sounder either. (Did see a 3-4m bronzie or bull shark out there though) Headed down to the colours and back into the harbour for not a touch. Tried for some more squid to wait for the next tide change. Managed a few cuttles and an occi. Anchored up amongst some deep moorings and was pretty slow going as well. Few red rock cod, a salmon, trev, bream and an eel. Did the octopus last night and boy did it come up a treat. Tenderized over my mail box, braised for an hour and a half, straight into a marinade and then chargrilled on the barbie. Yum! (Pre bbq) Just popped out for an hour for a plastic sesh at rose bay. 2 flatties in 5 casts (just legal so threw them back) and that was that on the flattie front. Moved up the other end of the beach to try for whiting and managed this guy. Certainly gave me some curry - was fat as. The school spooked and wind picked up so home I went, lunch in hand. 4. The yakka search has been dire over this way mate. All my normal spots have been empty - very frustrating. On the odd occasion I have found them, they've been up at watsons bay. In saying that, the few times I've managed to find them, they've been going like hot cakes - even more so than squid which haven't been as difficult to get. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. Stood on one at the start of the year. Very painful indeed - incrementally got worse over the period of an hour. Turned my blood to jelly around the wound as well, very strange sight - thought it might have acted as a coagulant but didn't stop bleeding for hours on end. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. Nice work on the video mate! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. very impressive mate, nicely done. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. thanks guys. Sure is Krispy - just a matter of finding the bait to catch them!! Hopefully it won't be too long before they start hitting lures a bit more freely... Samson came up real nice, similar to a trev I'd say. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. Had a quick flick this morning. Went to grab livies first thing which proved exceedingly difficult - not for the first time these past few weeks mind you... Tried spots A, B, C and D before finally going back to A where I managed two yakkas and a squid. Took them to my other spot with a mate, and threw one out each, and the squid on a little rod. Squid was first to go, made very light work of the 4lb gear... Managed a few more squid before my yakka was shown a bit of interest. After a few nudges and an eventual slack line, I brought it in to see its head missing. Tailor presumably. My mates livie went off shortly after but only for a salmon. Things shut down for an hour or so when i went to check on another squid I had out. Got a few touches as I was winding it in and then this little fella jumped on. Samsonfish I think? Headed home shortly after, reasonably satisfied. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. thanks guys. this one was on a sustain 4000 w/ 30lb to 30lb leader, which I thought would stop most* fish, but I'll probably have to invest in some 50lb for one of my other reels. and some heavy duty leader I guess... fingers crossed I'll cross paths with another one soon Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Nice to see the bonnies have shown up already. Sounds like a top day. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  12. the bait balls I've seen them chasing up have generally been whitebait. just gotta match the hatch! These Izumi Gastronomic Bait placcies go close, cut them in half and they're perfect. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  13. So after a fairly long hiatus over winter, I've just been starting to get back into the swing of things over the past month or two. Haven't really had too many post worthy captures but thought yesterday would be a decent place to start. With conditions looking ideal, my hopes were perhaps slightly exaggerated but it was a good morning nonetheless... Got down to my spot with a mate around 5am and got underway burleying for some yakkas. No such luck for about 45 minutes, so I asked my mate to drive to watsons bay to get some and bring back - thankfully he duly obliged. While he was gone I had a crack for some squid but only managed two little ones. Half an hour later he got back with livies in the bucket, and we both sent one out in haste. While we had the livies out we were also sending unweighted prawns down a bread burley trail, which quite bizarrely didn't get touched all morning - not even a little pinkie? Thankfully the yakkas did some work and after about 40 minutes of being in the water, my rod started to bounce. I readied myself before my rod totally keeled over. The drag was already just about locked, and I barely managed to even get it out of the rod holder on the jetty. What transpired over he next 20/30 seconds was something I've never experienced... This thing stripped line off like nothing I've ever seen, nearly spooling me before taking me around a mooring. Though I was obviously disappointed to lose a fish of that magnitude, it was a fairly humbling experience having never hooked up to something so powerful. Big big hoodlum. Anyway another 40 minutes later it's my mates turn, another stonker but he managed to stay connected for a good 6-7 minutes - though he barely made any ground. Certainly some big boys around. Our final take of the morning was a consolation prize - (my first legal king actually) at just over 67cm. He had a few friends following him into the jetty too but had run out of bait. To put the first fish into perspective, this one literally didn't even strip an inch of drag in comparison to the other one nearly spooling me. If only I got a look!! Made a beautiful ceviche out of the king with pineapple, home pickled onions and a few other bits and pieces - was delish. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. What a cracker, and from shore it just makes it that little bit sweeter... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. great write up mate, and an even better fish! congrats! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  16. He's tried to steal a flattie off me while I was out wading the flats. Not fun. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. My local Woolies has them, fresh and frozen. Labelled as Sardines. Much prefer them fresh.
  18. Interesting - sure they make a gun live bait? Or don't last well? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. Salted Mac tuna baits are dynamite! Might target some land based trevs this weekend, seem to be showing up in better numbers in the harbour. Of course I'll have a livie out hoping for a late season king! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  20. Not familiar with the George's but camp cove on the Eastern side little jetty there is almost guaranteed to snag a few. Last hour of the run up tide I've found best with a very slow sinking 1.5 bright pink yozuri - just because the jig is small, doesn't mean you won't pull in some decent sized squid. And as mentioned - as soon as you get one - chuck your jig straight back and normally another couple will be lurking around. As much success as I've had with the cheapies, the yamashitas/yo-zuris/gancraft will make a big difference. Literally can cast it out and just as it sinking you can hook up. Clean water, sand, rocks and weed beds are vital! Best of luck mate. If keeping for bait - straight into a ziplock bag with a touch of salt water from where you caught it and it will keep fresh for yonks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. Couldn't agree more, lightly weighted (or unweighted if possible) peeled banana prawns from woolies should do the damage. Bit off topic but went for dinner tonight at woolloomooloo wharf - Couldn't believe the amount of bream sitting idle in the top half of the water column. Literally 50+ just cruising around near moorings. Bit of unweighted bread or even a hot chip and I think you would be in business - think I'll have to give it a crack soon! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  22. Have pulled some big trevs out of Rose Bay - wouldnt be surprised if you hooked a monster! And nice work giving the spinning a go, surpisingly effective isnt it?!
  23. Sheesh. Thats a serious fish. Its funny, my PB bream which was just on 40 almost started forming a bump on its head like a mature snapper, that one doesnt seem to have it at all. Amazing the amount of shells in its belly as well. Big congrats!
  24. At least you get a few runs! Sure you will nail em next time - nice write up.
  25. Those cuttles can be feisty little buggers, find them a lot harder to rig up and keep alive as well. And I swear they 10000x more ink than squid or is that just me? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
