ps - the beakie will happen … but probably not on tubes.

Thanks Z - Ive eaten my fair share of whiting over the last 5 weeks. They are so good. Thanks for the wishes on the beakies - definitely not on the tubies haha

What’s the average size ball sinker you used? Ball sinker maybe? I tried but my line always go from 12 o’clock and knock all the way to 9 o clock…. And what rig champ? Some say pana some say simple

ball sinker with 1 metre trace and a bean around the hook?

Hi papafish - 1m trace is right. use 12lb

if you find the wash and gutter is carrying your bait back to shore, try using a star sinker on a slider to keep it grounded.

It ended up pouring rain most of the afternoon, was going to go to Warilla beach, got some worms yesterday in the rain, but with the grandkids it's not worth going in crap weather, they like to play and swim as well as fish.

Hopefully you will get out soon

    Very nice bag of fish.

The better beaches are to the south, in Bate Bay. 🤣

Thanks Yowie - HA - not sure i agree with you about Bate Bay - id still say Northern Beaches are more productive

Thanks Jenno - yeah its not the first time i have observed this. but interestingly i have also seen many days where they are fired up during late afternoon. so go figure

  4. Gday Raiders

Ill start this post by commenting on (in my opinion) the huge difference in fish productivity between north of Sydney heads and south.

Fishing by boat or off the beach to the south of Sydney heads whilst sometimes fruitful, i find, is generally harder going. Whilst on the other hand, heading north of Sydney heads i find more reef, more fish, better beaches, better sand, better gutters etc. Perhaps the difference in density of population has a part to play too? Does anyone else share this experience and view?

My quest for marlin has hit a stumbling block sadly. First, COVID - lost 8 days stuck at home during the holiday period sucked. Thankfully ive fully recovered with no lingering symptoms. Then, once out and about again, the weather offshore turned to shit for a while. Now im back to work and limited only to weekends. oh well. gotta keep trying ! it will happen eventually.

Yesterday arvo i was itching to wet a line so me and my mate Ralph decided to get out to find a gutter and hopefully, some whiting.

The gutter we were fishing was perfect. It had some waves breaking out about 30m out and then a deeper blue section infront of it, with a nice exit to the right hand side. Despite this it was a slow start with only 3 fish on ice in the first 2 hours, then, around 830 when the sun fully set, the fish turned on. In the space of an hour we picked up another 13 fish, two of them bream. One of them was a nice 40cm horsie, which makes the other legal fish look quite small haha. Tubies doing the damage as always, we fished until we were out of bait and then headed home.

    Thx for reading.

Try looking for gutters along the beach. If you look at the photo behind @GoingFishing's son, you'll see that there is a patch of calm water in front of the breakers - a classic example of a gutter. That's where the fish often will be found. Also, try packing light and moving around a bit - one light rod each, a small tacklebox and a bag for your fish. Move between gutters if there are multiple until you find fish. Also fish at various points in the gutter; cast to the back of it and then wind slowly to your feet. Don't be surprised if you find the fish right in the white wash at your feet 1m away.

Even though I'm not awesome at it, this is one of my favourite kinds of fishing. In fact, any kind of fishing where I have sand and water at my feet, I really enjoy. If only I didn't live so far from the beach!

    Very well described

Nice tub of fish, worth the effort. Early christmas day can be a good time to fish as boat numbers are usually low, until later on.

Thanks Yowie. Boat ramp was surprisingly full when i arrived. Maybe 50 trailers parked

Really need to know what size sinker and hook and rig are used for whitting. If you don’t mind me asking.

as I’m hopeless at targeting these😂

    many thanks

Hey papafish. Its really simple hey ! Size 6 longshank hook. Red color.

1 metre of 12lb mono trace to a swivel. And then the smallest ball sinker u can get away with.

  10. Gday Raiders.

Early morning wake up today. 5am at the boat ramp. Armed with two blocks of pillies we fanged it in dream conditions to the Botany Wide FAD. No time for collecting live bait as i needed to be back by 1pm to take the family out for lunch. Took all of 30 mins to get there from the ramp which was nice.

Used one block of pillies as cubed berly. The other block as whole bait, unweighted. Dollies were there and they were hungry. Between 3 people we kept 21 fish. Lots of families to feed today.

Lots of fun and lots of non stop action.

Off to Avoca tomorrow for a week with the family. Will try fishing the entrance while im there but need to get past the crowds.

    Cheers.

Hit up the beaches again for more whiting, this time with a few friends and my boy Adam. The usual plan, find a gutter, wait till dark, worms producing the goods.

The whiting are unusually on fire this year. Must be all the rain weve had. They are ravenous and all good size. Barely any undersize fish to be found.

    Get out there fellas

    Thx for reading

Cut occy into pieces - Marinade in lemon juice (from a real lemon) for exactly half an hour before cooking. No more no less otherwise it will either be tough or over done. Toss every 10 mins through the process.

this will make the occy tender.

After exactly half an hour drain all lemon juice. I’ll slightly squeeze the excess lemon out or put on a paper towel.

rub in extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with oregano (get the mountain oregano from the fruit shops that’s still on the branches) makes a big diff. Salt and cracked black pepper.

    slap it on the bbq

while on the bbq, baste with a brush - olive oil, lemon juice and oregano that you have pre mixed in a bowl.

    don’t overcook.

Can also sprinkle with a few crumbs of a soft feta cheese when serving.

serve this with a leaf salad on the side 👍👍

Awesome. Love it. Will definitely give it a try
