thanks Larkin. Im still trying to perfect my occy cooking. I always seem to make them chewy but my last one was OK.

Top job Sam! Some very nice eating there but it’s rubbing a bit of salt in my wounds  Little Johnny and I were off shore yesterday- had a hard time with livies but eventually managed 20 in the tank. Then headed out turning south to try live baiting kings along various headlands. Eventually ended up at the Peak. All for a big fat Zero!

    Back to school for me.
    cheers Zoran

ps- best of luck with the beakie this season!

Thats Kingie fishing Z !!! Very hit and miss i find. You should have stopped on the way in and fillet a few of those livies for snapper and flattiies.

Awesome feed! I’ve always wanted to catch a pearly way up there on the to do list. 🤘

Thanks Brendan. Very good eating. Northern Beaches during summer will always have a few

Nice going Sam, gotta love pearl perch - water must be warming up, so summer kings & Dollie’s not far away. Is the occie  for bait or eating?

Thanks Bob. Water was very warm. Occy is for eating. My son loves bbq octopus though i havent perfected my recipe yet.

Whiting were made for kids I reckon, good looking, good fight and just fun to catch in a great location, keep taking him fishing, there is just nothing in the world as good as a dad taking kids fishing...well except taking  grandkids fishing!

Totally agree Noel. They are simply just too much fun and, as long as your in the right place for them, so easy to catch.

Thanks mate me too. Very tasty

Great bag of whiting. Fun to catch, especially for kids, top of the range eating, those fillets would be saving you some good money if you had to buy them, and just in time for christmas.

Thanks Yowie. Adam had a really good time and when the bites slowed he went exploring the sand with his torch. Good fun.

Comments are bang on! No better fish for a youngster to cut his teeth on! A couple of hours filleting and your Christmas dinner is sorted. As Yowie said at $50 per kilo for fillets that’s a great return on a bag of worms and your son is away from devices and COVID! Merry Christmas 🎅

Thanks Jenno. They certainly are good eating. $40 bucks worth of worms probably turned out 7kg of fish last night.

    Hey Sam,

Been there many times. If they are asking and ready then take them.
However, start with little trips offshore and test their sea legs.
You also need to be experienced yourself at offshore fishing (which you are) and knowing the conditions.
I often take the 3 youngest and collect bait which is always fun and then just spend some time trolling.
    That’s where I’d start anyway!
    Have fun 🤩

    cheers scratchie!!!

Thanks for the advice Scratchie. Makes sense

  4. Gday Raiders. Last day of work today and knocked off early so decided to take my son out for an afternoon fish. Target species was the humble yet very tasty whiting. Bait was tube worms.

Arrived around 7pm and fished till 10pm. Tide was very low when we arrived but it made finding the gutter super easy (you can see it clear as day in the background of the photo below) . The fishing was slow initially, a fish every 20 mins or so. But around 830pm the tide really started rising and we starting getting some good fish. Most of them around 30cm. Some nudging 40cm.

All up we managed a nice bag of 20 fish and my son Adam probably caught 7 of them. Very proud of him.

    Thx for reading

    Sam

  5. Gday Raiders

Its that time of year, my bottom bashing sessions are soon to come to an end and replace with the much painstaking yet very rewarding hunt for a beakie.

Todays session was really just to see what the situation looks like offshore.

First up. Trolled north head in the hope for a Bonito or King. No love there.

Fanged it to the FAD. Water temp, hot. 24 degrees but green. No dollies around. Even the babies or rat kingies no where to be seen yet.

We then did some reef hopping between Manly and Long reef finding the odd snapper, an Octopus and a single pearly.

Fishing the 70-80 depth the current was running downhill HARD. There was a southerly breeze going so with boat and current going opposite directions it made getting to the bottom a little difficult.

On the way back we trolled from blue Fish point to north head again hoping for a Bonito but to no avail. Looks like they havent arrived yet.

On holidays from tomorrow and plan on doing a shit tonne of fishing over the holidays

    Thx for reading

Running Star sinker (have a few different weights and adjust to conditions) down to swivel (make sure it’s a large enough size not to get stuck in the eye of your sinker)

I use a 50cm leader to a mustard fine worm hook in size 1/0. But I will adjust the leader length down slightly if the conditions are rough to avoid tangles. The fine worm hooks are really sharp and have tiny barbs on the top of the shank facing both ways - hold bait better than any other hook I’ve found. Alternatively just use a red long shank.

Try a 1 meter trace next time. The bait has a better natural movement. I always fish 1 meter trace

Nice catch, I’m new to beach fishing. What rig do you use champ?? And also 8lb line should be more then capable to land a 50+cm unless beach fishing is something different 🤣

Beach fishing is absolutely very different. 8lb on the beach is just a waste of your time and money

Thanks mate, Your report last week had me itching to give it a go off the beaches.

Thought I’d try a light leader, but switching over to 12lb seemed to do the trick.

what pound leader are you using?

(im running 20lb braid main line)

Glad to hear i inspired you bud.

    I was fishing 12lb leader.

  9. Great report. And great result considering a 10 year hiatus!

Yes, absolutely 8lb line in the surf is a no go. Probably ok for inside the estuary but as i mentioned in an earlier report this week. The backwash from the surf combined with the fish naturally trying to swim into deeper water creates the perfect leader popping scenario!

Glad to hear you were happy with the new gear

Don't forget to have a beer at the Ulladulla Pub.

Great Pub, had some great times there.

    Cheers.

Thanks for the tip. Will do. They need our tourism dollars after all these lockdowns which is why im only holidaying in Aus for the next 2 yrs.
