So it's ok for commercial operator to rake the sea, take whatever they want to sell, discard the "rubbish" dead into the ocean & the consumer gets chargead this & we can only take 5??

    Wake up people!

How about they restrict the commercial quata which is why we agreed to pay for a fishing license in the 1st place.

No point us agreeing an erosion of our fishing rights to a bag limit of 5 when commercial operators are not affected!!

Dusky flathead are much more spread out and not as numerous as say the offshore species like blue spots, marble and tigers.

I think most fishos would be having a really good day to find 2 or 3 legal size duskies in a session. Let alone 5.

As long as they dont change the bag limit on the offshore species i cant see this really impacting many people.

Ps. Its so woke to say....wake up 🤣🤣

Top stuff Sam. The weather has been atrocious- the big wet and swells coinciding with weekends - bah humbug.
Glad you got out champ and were rewarded by that tasty bag. 👍👍👍

Here’s to a top summer filled with fin for you.

    cheers Zoran

Thanks Z. We had whiting fillets last night. Delicious !!!!! Hopefully well find a beakie to put onboard this summer season

Stonka whiting! That’s king George sized

Thanks Rummers. He put an awesome fight and i was concerned the 12lb leader would pop but it held up ok. Especially when the surf is rolling back downhill pulling the fish with it. Prime time territory for leader popping.

Chances of him giving you the location =0 :074:
I will be searching on coastwatch when the sun comes up - I will find it and you watch how the seas dump a big swell in my lap right when I am going for a fish ! If Narrabeen lagoon has broken out  into the sea that is a real hotspot for whiting and bream . been trying to catch some whiting on Gulp sand worms , so far only a few Dart - that is when I can get out as the swell always seems to be none existent or 3m !

Ripper catch by the way Going fishing !

HA - looks like you havent been on fishraider very long and dont know me from a bar of soap. I am more than happy to share information on locations..to loyal fishraiders......to those who have been on the forum long and are active contributors. I dont share locations for the ghost stalkers to pick up. PS had a looksy of your profile, only two reports with some very generic locations noted...hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Practise what you preach brother

Nice bag of Whiting, top job, for those asking about "secret" spots, you don't need any secret spots for Whiting, use the right bait, choose any beach and look for a gutter, I prefer low tide just on daylight or dusk, but you can catch them almost anytime, just get out there and give it a try, waiting for someone to tell you where will not catch you fish.

Thanks Noel -  yep. any fisho worth a grain of salt would know beach fishing is very dynamic changing daily. where i fished last night might be useless tomorrow ! Sand gutters move all the time.

Thanks Yowie. he pulled pretty hard, thought it was a salmon!

I have iirc in the past  even supplied a map ! Doesn’t mean they are going to catch fish though - there are a few subtle things they still have to work out for themselves !

Mmmmmm yep had a look at your only two reports on fishraider and didnt find any maps 🧐

Nice haul @GoingFishing, out of interest how do you put the worms on the hook typically - up the middle of the worm so to speak, or back and forth through it's side to fit more on?

Hi Lakelad - i use a worm that is slightly longer than the length of the hook - say 1cm longer. I feed the worm onto the hook through the guts and then at the very end i bring the hook out and bring it in once more side to side as almost like a "knot"

  4. Gday Raiders

    Its been a while !

Bad weather has been a curse. Unable to take the boat out, the itch to cast a line was becoming unbearable. So i packed up work early yesterday and headed up to the northern beaches for some sandy R & R.

Armed with live tube worms and red long shank hooks i walked the beach until i found a very obvious gutter. First cast onto the target species. Whiting.

Fished from 7 to 10 and packed up with a decent bag of whiting and a solo bream. The biggest whiting was a nice thick horsie at 44cm, couldnt beleive my eyes when it came out of the surf.

I quite enjoyed the relaxing sunset over the water with the sound of the surf breaking and it was a nice change up from the usual boat prep and wash down of the weekend bottom bash. Though admittedly i do hate how the sand always inevitably finds its way into your gear.

Heres hoping for some better weather this weekend. Thanks for reading

I agree 100% but I just wanted to understand to hook something before I give up. As I get more experience, I might leave the circle hooks for rainy days.

    It seems like:

    - Small fish are taking my bait without taking the hook

    - I am not experiences enough to feel the bites both on the reel and rod. Only the biggest bites are being felt

Id ditch the circle hooks permanently. A bit of a marketing gaff to be honest. 90% of the time fish can be safely dehooked and returned to the water.

Thanks for your report HP, it made me laugh a bit. Lots of good anglers on this forum will shoot me down in flames for what I'm about to tell you, but that's what the site is all about. Ditch the circle hooks! Half the fun in angling is reading the bite and challenging yourself to hook the fish. Chucking a bait in with a circle hook leaves you with the minimum fun level of winding the fish in. Sure it will (most likely) be hooked in the corner of the mouth, but the real challenge is taken away by the fish hooking itself. I know there are benefits with circle hooks (possible less damage to the fish). Personally, I like to imagine what's going on beneath the water, it increases the anticipation level. You will soon learn when the fish has the bait in its mouth and is swimming away with it. Time to strike!

Some things you will learn in the short term. Small fish will pick a decent bait to pieces and not get hooked (most of the time). So use a smaller hook, little or no weight, and smaller bait size. Move the bait to make it harder for them...if you want to catch these small fish. Use berley to work the fish into a feeding frenzy where they will throw caution to the wind. A simple mix of bread and finely chopped fish is great for bringing Bream around jetties, etc. Most of all do the right thing by wifey, get more leave passes and enjoy the experience.

    Cheers, bn

    Welcome.to fishraider champ

Im with BN. Ditch the circle hooks.

  7. My thoughts are f$#! this crap. 14 weeks of lockdown and it was sunny and low winds. As soon as lockdown ended its been raining for practically 4 weeks straight !

I dont mind getting wet whilst fishing as long as its warm. But the problem is the wind and the swell. I fish exclusively offshore unless i take the kids out for a fish in which case ill fish inside the bay.

Hopefully there are a few days with light rain and low wind/swell so we can at least get out there and chase some pelagics this summer

I bought a second hand 2019 YF7000 Southerner in October 2020. Great boat, very happy. However, the deck is constantly wet. Not flooded, but an annoying amount of water under your feet. By my calculations, the outlet holes in the vee drain at the back of the deck, are the same level as the scupper outlet on the transom which is below water level. Seems like a flawed design. The "squash ball" non return valve arrangement seems to be working (not stuck but who knows what is going on in there when at rest?). When you're underway the water drains off but afetr a while at rest, it seems to get water back on the deck. Has anyone with a YF7000 had similar problems or even better, come up with a work around?

I have the 6200 yellowfin HT.

I used to have this problem. There are two tubes that run from the deck to the scuppers. I found that whenever i wash ky boat inevitably some dirt/debri will.wash down the tubes.

Over time, the debri stops the squash ball from fully closing.

I remove the scupper cap and clean it out every month. No more water coming in.

It goes without saying - im itching to get out for a fish as im sure many of you are too.

Just wanted to say hello and hope everyone is safe and healthy. This is a difficult time for everybody, weather your struggling for work, mentally or simply bored out of your brains. Dont be afraid to reach out to a friend. We all need to stand by each other in true aussie form.

I miss reading the flood of reports and its good to see a lucky few managing to get out.

Hopefully we will all be back on the water as soon as possible.

    Thanks Sam
