    Hi Raiders,

I'd like to open up a discussion about snapper fishing and moon phases.

Over the last year or so I have been putting quite a bit of time into my snapper fishing and today really set home that I think moon phases play a very big part on feeding habits.

Today is the day before the full moon and it was apparent that spots I fished last week and good success on did not fish the same today at all. I have noticed that the fish are not sounding the same and not schooling the same. Fish were very patchy and quite finicky.

Does anybody have any personal experiences they would like to share.

DM me if you're not comfortable sharing with everyone as I know how much hard work and time goes into documenting this kind of information. I like sharing info with like minded people 👌🏼

    Tight lines 🎣

Im also convinced that moon has a big impact on snapper fishing.

Exactly how ? Im not sure yet. I suspect it has something to do with schooling/swarming of bait which follows lunar cycle. Which in turn causes the snapper to school rather than spread out.

so far i beleive snapper fishing after a full moon is best

I think that trag is actually a jew, isn't it.  Oops!  Oh well, still over the legal size so no harm done

If the inside of the mouth was orange then its a trag. Looks like a trag to me.

Rare to get jews reef bashing off Sydney

Check the legalities with RMS on the folding drawbar - @motiondave posted there may be some grey area...

But as an alternative this could be the go ...😁

    Thanks for ur help mate.

Due to how much fuel my runabout can hold I probably wouldn't go much further north than parallel to manly beach offshore, so I'll probs have a look at some sonar charts and try and find some reefy looking areas to give a go around the north head-manly area. I've had my eye on the whales/northerners area for a while now do you know much about it in terms of species etc?

    Cheers

Northerners is a great spot, its difficult to fish properly without a spot lock or without anchoring up.

During warmer months at northerners ull find snapper, trag, kingies.

    Fish the edges for flathead.

Might be worth investing a few hundred bucks to get a spare fuel tank added to the boat.

  6. Welcome aboard Paddlejumper.

There is some good fishing to be had off Sydney. I have been fishing the reefs off Sydney for a very long time and like to think i get some consistency in my results.

With the type of depths your willing to go (2nm) you will notice some very clear and distinct features of the Sydney coastline.

South head to Coogee - Empty sandy bottom and very minimal reef opportunities, particularly in the depth range you've restricted yourself to.

North head to manly - lots of reef, mixed with sandy bottoms.

Manly to Long reef - lots of reef mixed with sandy bottoms.

When the flatties are on the chew - it is worth giving it a go around the sandy bottom infront of the lighthouse off Watsons Bay/Vaucluse - rosetta in the 30m to 50m line.

otherwise, bottom line advice from me, go north. explore the reefs between Manly and Long reef as in my experience, the north side of Sydney heads is significantly more productive than the south.

You’ve had some great catches of quality fish. You put in the tome and reap the rewards - well done and thanks for sharing.

Great looking back over old photos of fishing and family times.
We are really blessed to have the environment and opportunities.

We definately are blessed to live in this country with such fertile environment.  Thanks Pickles

You are indeed the Flattie, king.👑

Thanks Mate. A very easy species to target. The one trick to getting a bag is FINDING them....after that its usually a fish a cast

    cheers scratchie!!!

Indeed a shame scratchie...but a short, temporary and necessary sacrifice 😔

I have plenty more photos, might post some up later tonight

Super photos. Have you got a big freezer ?

Cheers. We have a double freezer at home

That being said, i never fish alone, and most of the time there are 3 people onboard, sometimes 4. So by the time you divide it all up, give a few fish to the neighbour and the in laws, theres barely any left over for the freezer.

Plenty of great fish and great memories there GF- hopefully this will be over before too long and you're out catching some more soon

    Thanks Wazza

Its frustrating, but i take solace in that it is temporary. Sooner or later vaccine numbers will be up and we can open the doors.

If they not immediate household, they stay home or wait till things improve. If you cannot hang out for two weeks because you need your mates so much, you all need to check yourselves.

    Just saying....

So what happens when the rules dont change and lockdown gets extended for 6 months...like those poor folks in Victoria suffered. Dont for a second think NSW are doing a better job, weve simply just been lucky.

    just saying.....

Headed out this morning with my son and one of his mates with a plan to fish Longie and maybe some flathead on the way home.  Got ourselves half a dozen yellow tail livies on the way past Barrenjoey Heads and made good time down to an empty Long Reef.  Had a great couple of hours with Kings hitting baits and jigs, snapper and a good size sea bream.  Probably caught 20 plus kings, but again not the elusive "keeper".  But, lots of fun.

Then went to our usual flathead grounds.....seems today was a kindergarten day as out of probably 40 flathead caught, only one was worth keeping at about 45cm.  On the run back we decided to stop at a GPS mark from the previous owner of the boat and then it really came together!  Started with a few snapper, then the salmon came through and then we got hit by a school of Barracuda which cost us two jigs and a paternoster rig but we did get one to the side of the boat before releasing it. Thought we would catch a few of the livies to run the downrigger and ended up catching a Kingie on the sabiki rig!!  We estimate we boated over 100 fish today between the three of us!

Photo is of what i think is a Sea Bream....can anyone confirm?

I remember a recipe for rock cockies a while back, not sure if it was posted here or in another forum.

    It goes something like this:

    1. Sauté 1 chopped onion, 2 cloves of garlic and a small piece of ginger in some clarified butter.

    2. Add to 500ml fish stock and 1 can of coconut cream and bring to the boil.

    3. Gut, scale and cut the rock cockies into large chunks (think curry pieces)

    4. Add the rock cockies as well as an old piece of leather to the now fragrant broth (important that the leather is added!).

    5. Boil for 45mins (or until the leather begins to feel tender).

    6. Add 1 stalk of lemongrass, 1 tsp tumeric and 1tsp of chilli flakes to the broth to finish the curry.

    7. Meanwhile, steam 1 cup of jasmine rice

    8. Using a slotted spoon, carefully remove the rock cocky pieces from the pot (it is important that no pieces of rock cocky are left behind in the curry or it will ruin the dish), set these aside.

    9. Serve the now tender leather curry over the steamed jasmine rice, you can try feed the rock cocky to the cat but its best thrown away.

    VOILA!!!

    Rock Cockies !

The Australian slango never ceases to impress 😆
