Great stuff Sam, good to see the kids out there having fun - stuff the kids will never forget. (hope you got to make some sandcastles too).

Thanks Pickles. Its memories like these that last forever ! RE sandcastles...of course. Who do you think was the designer 😂

Great job @GoingFishing. I find that a fish caught by one of your kids is worth five that you caught yourself. It's very rewarding to share your favourite pastime with your kids, and have them enjoy it too.

Absolutely agree. Very satisfying and proud moment. I really cant wait for them to hop onboard offshore fishing with me. But they are still a little too young perhaps. The wife is very scared !

The kids look happy, fish caught, then fish and chips you did not have to cook yourself. A great day out.

Thanks Yowie. Thats what holidays are all about id say !

Very enjoyable read buddy - looks like everyone was having fun. You’ll remember this day for ever.  Adam is a little Sam for n the making.

I was surprised you didn’t fit n a trip to Bunnings for more plastic tube after the co-op!

    cheers and enjoy your trip.

Thanks Z. Some of my best memories involve the kids and fishing. I remember my daughters first fish..narrabeen lagoon. A yellowfin bream about 9cm in.length on a size 10 hook ! She was stoked. The boy is on his way to becoming a fisherman too i hope.

RE bunnings. I brought 4 rod holders with me so the loss of 2 was not catastrophic to our plan. I usually ask scavenge a few pipe offcuts from my building sites and cut them into 1m pieces.

    Gday Raiders

Headed over to Burill Beach today to have a fish with the family. The forecast was for rain and it was pretty cool and overcast but it had been dry all morning so we made a mad dash over hoping we could squeeze in a cast or two before the rain rolled in.

The surf conditions were pretty strong and from the highest vantage point available there was no gutter visible in 400m of either direction. With three kids, beach chairs and wife with me i chose what appeared to be the deepest part of the beach and set up.

The kids decided to build a sand castle while i prepared the rods and sadly 2 of my plastic tube rod holders rolled into the ocean never to be seen again. First line in i wasn't optimistic at all as there was a cross wash taking my ball sinker full across the beach and onto the sand to the left. I upsized the sinker hoping to keep the bait more grounded and started getting a few bites. Adam was adamant that he wanted to fish with ""his favourite rod"" which is totally unsuitable for beach fishing, but i didnt want to break his spirit so agreed. Surprisingly he managed to snag a juvenile aussie salmon all on his own. Very proud moment for me. Ayah was next with a nice little whiting.

We got a few more undersize whiting and a flatty which we sent back and then packed up and headed over to the fishermans co-op at Ulladulla for fish and chips.

All in all a great day out.

    Thanks for reading

    Sam

Top stuff Sam. I may be breaking out my beach gear just to do the same in the near future.  Agree 100% you have to move to work the water until you find them. Enjoy the goods buddy.
    cheers Zoran

Thanks Z. Let me know when you want to go and we can do a trip together 👍

That's a great haul there Sam. Fishing has so many alternatives. Casting a line off the beach is something that i haven't done in a while. Enjoy your trip south!

    cheers scratchie!!!

Thanks Jeff. This time last year we were in port. I would have loved to come back but the family wanted to change it up !. PS theyre regretting it now. Ulladulla and Port Stephens are chalk and cheese apart!

This is what life's all about Sam. Any day where you can catch enough fish to feed several families would have to be a good one. I hope the rest of your break brings the same amount of success and you get back to what you do feeling refreshed and ready to battle through 2022 and whatever it presents. I'll look forward to your next report.

    Tight lines, bn

Thanks Big Neil for your kind words. Tight lines

  6. Gday Raiders

Currently at Ulladulla for the week. As i mentioned in an earlier post i planned to do some bottom bashing offshore and also wanted to give burill lake a try for whiting.

Conditions today seemed good for a bottom bash. So we dropped in at Ulladulla 6am and hopped around a few marks i was thankful to have recieved from a good friend. Managed to find 3 decent reds between 40cm and 50cm and a dozen or so flathead. Theres 4 families here together and it was a delicious dinner this afternoon where everything got eaten. Nothing tastier than same day caught fish!

Hopefully out again tomorrow and then a whiting session in the afternoon with my son and daughter.

Kids also having a great time hunting the rock pools for starfish, shells and crabs which all went back after a quick inspection.

That's my kind of fishing, well done. Augurs well for the rest of summer!

Did you find most bites ended in hookups?

Also, running rig with trace or paternoster?

Thanks mate. Its good fun. I have running rig with 1m of 12lb trace. Not at all strikes hooked up we lost about 5 or so fish. One fish i lost in the surf. Backwash from the waves put too much pressure and the leader popped.

Well done, some nice fillets to come off those.

Always a good idea to bury them 👍 keeps them fresh.

Thanks mate. Yup fresh is best !!

I'm going to test that theory out tomorrow by braving the southerly and trying some worms off the beach:)

PS.....find the gutter....take your time. Dont let the excitement overcome you to get into it.

    No gutter. No fish !

  9. Nice bag of fish Jenno. At least you got a nice feed !

Im not an expert on whiting fishing by any means but i find that bait makes the biggest difference. Over the years ive fished side by side with people who used nippers, prawns etc and always without a doubt worms outperformed every other bait both in terms of quality and quantity of fish.

I also find that the larger fish are on the beaches as opposed to the estuaries. Im sure the larger fish do come into the estuaries occasionally

There was a gentleman there last night chasing flathead but in the hour he was next to me i didnt see him pull any. Based on a few reports ive seen i suspect they are in deeper water atm

Brained em’ again Sam - goes to show the wisdom in moving when things go quiet (stay in the same place doing the same thing the same way will usually produce the same result).

Well done, a nice feed there - all the best down south, I haven’t been to Ulladulla but hear some good reports of fish there.

Thanks Pickles. I must admit it took a bit of convincing for ralph to pack up all the gear and the beach chairs and trudge through the sand ! But it paid off.

Thanks for the well wishes. I have a few friends who frequent Ulladulla and Burill Lake so have a few marks in advance.

Thanks Rebel. I was impressed by the size of them last night. Mostly big girls

  12. Gday Raiders

Couldnt help myself after mondays sandy R&R. Packed up work early again and headed out for another whiting session this time with old mate Ralph.

Almost pulled the pin when clouds and wind picked up with lightning and thunder but the forecast said this was over the blue mountains and heading north. So we trusted the weatherman and headed out.

Found a gutter which produced a few whiting then it went quiet. Packed up and walked another 400m or so up the beach and found what was a much deeper darker gutter. Produced another 8 or so whiting.

Absolute horsies tonight. Four of them just under 40cm and a few around 35cm. They make the just legals look tiny.

Just finished cleaning them and all the big ones were female and full of roe.

Lunch tomorrow will be whiting with a side of fries and garden salad.

Heading to Ulladula for a week from Monday plan to do some bottom bashing and give Burill lake a try for whiting.

    Thx for reading.

Hey Jim. Sorry to hear about your back and your knee. Hopefully you will be back onto fishing soon.

Extreme Fishing in Merrylands stocks live tube worms most of the time.

Why not keep the bag limit where it is but make the legal size limit from 45cm to 60cm with 1 fish only over 60cm??

To me that makes more sense that taking the younger breeding population before they have had a chance to spawn. young!

If you can catch 10 fish between 45-60cm then you have had an exceptional & rare day & even less larger females taken!!!

You have it backwards. The older/larger fish are the breeders. Flathead start breeding at 22cm in length. So by the time they reach 36cm they would have had about 10 spawning cycles (they have 5 a year between Nov to June).

I for one would much rather keep the size limit at 36cm and reduce the bag limit. Because in almost 20 years of fishing i have never bagged 10 dusky flathead in a day. Have you?
