  1. Oh wow. Wonder if they are common around there, I thought they would have been a fair bit further out to sea!
  2. The water around browns isn't that favourable, it looks like the good weather is all around Southern Canyons
  3. That mako was a big suprise, as soon as you lost it I threw out half a bonito on an overhead and crossed my fingers! I'm pretty sure I fell asleep on the car trip home, walked in the door and crashed on the lounge - I was exhausted after that 3am wake up! I'm voting we start at 5:30 next time so I can get another hours sleep! Warren got a big 50cm snapper and I got a 36, we got a few smaller varieties too. I picked up a mowie aswell. We were plagued with sgt baker and barracuda as well (aren't they bloody cranky when you pull them out of the water!) Catch of the day goes to Warren who caught the biggest chunk of Australia I've ever seen landed on a spinning reel.
  4. Get one with dual batteries

I've got a kodachi (black) that I use for pretty much everything.
  7. With my luck you'd be better off fishing for marlin in the local swimming pool! Sit on the deck with a beer and let the captain drive the boat around. Originally yeah, I was going to go southern canyons to browns, but looks like we'll be further south now.
  8. South. Water looks better south, all the fish reports have been south.
  9. You'll be getting calls from magazines everywhere if you get a yellowfin at the peak! Jig for kings What other fish can be encountered at the peak, other than kingfish? Leather jackets :/
  10. Which fad? The hacking wide fad? That's a decent way out! My experience has been (providing weather doesn't go ugly), once you're out that far it's all pretty much the same. The things you have to look out for are your sense of direction and fuel level. It's easy to mess both of those up when you can't see the land! Just make sure you know how much fuel you'll need and use the rule of thirds 1/3 for the way there, 1/3 for the way back and 1/3 spare. Regarding how to fish the shelf, pretty much the same as you'd fish 3/4 to the fad - drag around some lure's and pray you're in the right spot! I'll probably be running this spread for tuna next time I get out wide. - Rapala Xrap 30 / Laser Pro - Black Bart Pelaegic Breakfast - Richter Dorado - Zucker Feather Just make sure you've got a plan and know the areas most likely to hold fish
  11. You'll need to go a bit further than the shelf. Out of sydney - they are being caught just past browns. So you're looking at about 30km out - keep in mind that you don't just drive to that 30km, pull up and catch a tuna though. You get to that 30km and zig-zag around for a while until you find something. A few fish are being caught around Southern Canyons too, on an ideal day I'd probably go down to the southern canyons and troll up to Browns. BUT the most important thing to remember is that there has to be fish there to catch, so you can make the trip out and end up with zero's - which is what happened to 50 odd boats at batemans last sunday. Start reading up on Altimetry and Sea Surface Temperatures, this will give you the best idea of what the fish are doing (next to first hand reports). How far offshore have you been previously?
  12. With one of those bait rigging needles it would be
  13. I need a bigger boat to get through the 2m swell. heard a fair few reports of fish around that area today now
  14. That depends more on your boat size and experience than the 2m sea conditions.
  15. Thats similar to the Rig mel used.
  16. PHGFC confirmed it on Facebook earlier today. I've heard it was about 5nm East of Browns
  17. I gave it a shot over the social a few times. Problem is they need to be around when you're jigging otherwise you're just throwing metal around the ocean! The lure is just a knife jig or vertical jig - 32g is what I used. Basically a small version of the big jigs they use for kings.
  18. lucky bastard! Here's hoping we get s Port Stephens social so we can all get a taste of that!
  19. scattered reports from down south, I reckon a week or 2 before we get solid numbers.
  20. Some that are no longer available and for him to use personally.... I believe that's what he is asking for
  21. How funny, I've been playing with this lately too. Easiest way is to go with diggers casting resin and MEKP hardener. You can get cheaper casting resin from Barnes (google it for the full website). If You want to replicate lures or have a cast able blank then you will need pinkysil which is a moulding silicone. Most lures are '2 piece' casts you cast the inside shape and add keel weight if need be. Stick prism tape and eyes or whatever sparkle stuff you want and then put that insert into a final cast. You'll need a lathe, or a lot of patience to polish the final cast into a nice finish. Jim Rizzuto has 2 excellent books on it
  22. Another year and another hairtail social wrapped up. Had a great time over the weekend, even if I STILL haven't got one. Thanks to all involved, good to see everyone again. I'll be back next year - third time lucky or something!
