  1. centrepins are the most controllable reel for this style of fishing..being able to roll spool in or out by fingers keeps better control of line while drifting freely..good quality reels spin very freely...I can lay a 40mtr cast on the rocks and because of pendulum action I have fewer tangles than sidecast or threadline...rick

  2. thers guys catchin jew on Stockton all the time..i spoke to them and they are only using livies with the slide rigs..the livies are hooked in back near tail and slipped into surf on slide rig that way they swim out to the end of line..dead baits are harder and work better on a steep beach so you have some angle on the line to work with..hope this helps..rick

  3. steering cables lay coiled in a lot of transoms and end up rusting an seizing ..I replaced mine not long ago and its easier than stuffing round trying to free them up when they are seizing.. replacing is easy non expensive and gets you back on the water quicker..rick

  4. if using half pillies try the half hitch round the tail or with heads I thread the hook thru the eye socket twice then pin the hook into the back of the pillie..they stay on pretty good that way..if salting  break block apart then wrap ten pillies in newspaper with salt and leave in bottom of fridge for 48hrs then freeze..they should be tuff then..rick

  5. depends which part of the coast your on...up my way you have Catherine hill bay..moonie..frazer park..birdie..nth entrance....they all hold fish..some of the other guys might be able to help with further south..rick

  6. the little creek that runs from fennel up behind the industries to west Toronto.. the back of cockle creek ..dora creek..only trouble is its closed season on taking either species in rivers at the moment..rick

  7. hey neil..hope you are well and catching a few..mate I can only offer what works for me..others have different techniques that catch as big and maybe more but ours is simple..a bit messier than plastics but I love crumbed snapper..YUMMY.. rick

  8. small 2/0or3/0 hooks  and smallest ball sinker possible to slowly get to the bottom..last trip at one stage during afternoon the current was running hard just before tide change and I was using a 3 ball to get to bottom fifty mtrs back in 7mtrs of water..an hour later was using 00 ball...usually if not much current I use no sinker with head baits as they sink better than strip or fillet baits..sinker straight to hook sometimes I tie 60cm of 30 lb trace.but normally I fish straight 15lb as heavier line you get less bites and lighter you cant stop them in bad ground..its a balancing act we have played for many years..these are my personal likes and quite a few guys out here will disagree but im happy with my results...you may want to fish paternosters in deeper water but this is more fun..we get lots of good bycatch..last trip I had pearlies samsons kings bonito macktuna bream tarwhine jackets...just go try and change things up as you go..we have a system that works for us..i hope it works for you..rick

  9. there is miles of reefs from broken bay to botany bay..if I were you start picking shallow reefs from 7-8 mtrs to about15mtrs..fish daylight and dusk..i get some of my best reds in the period after the sun has gone but not fully dark..burley is a must..anchor upcurrent from the reef edge and fish back towards it..the burley will attract baitfish or sweep and that will bring the reds for a look..don't be scared to fish large floating baits..i get a lot of my reds on slimy or yakkas cut off behind the pectoral fins with a hook put thru the upper an lower jaw and thrown out with plenty of slack to sink freely..a two kilo red will smash a large slimy head easier than you think..my last session produced reds over 7 kilo..all the best fish ate heads..whiting .small mullet.tailor .herring will also work..another standout is large squid heads or occie legs..if you look on google maps you can pick out quite a few shallow reefs up and down the coast..hope this helps..this is the results you can get..rick
