  1. Ive also got a seajigger 305, well i had two until i snapped them both on rat kings this week. They look great and cast a mile but the high modulus graphite is useless when you load up on a decent fish If your spinning up tailor and sambo's theyre great but not suited to pelagics and kings. The Em cast may be a suitable reel as it is light, has a long cast spool and high ratio. Shop around and get a feel for the gear you want. I always love an excuse to spend hours in my local tackle shop
  2. Hey Hsm, what sort of rod are you matching it to? The emblem pro is the most popular spin reel out there along with the shimano stradic in the 8000 series, both are tough and have a high gear ratio for quick retrieves
  3. Haha Roberta, very cheeky! I do regret selling my kayak a bit, but not to worry i will be back on the horse as soon as I finish my studies. I might get one of those fancy hobies Its a big lifestyle change going from tradesman to full time student. Mariner 31, if I didnt have family/chrissy commitments Id be there in a flash. Thats a great offer!!
  4. Hey Payatz and jewgaffer, thanks for your replies Pm's are sent and I look forward to fishing with you both! I still have nine weeks of holidays left and a whole heap of spare time raiders, hit me up if you need a deckie!
  5. Hey raiders, Well, I have a whole lot of time on my hands as I'm on holidays from now until february. Three days in and Im sick of sleeping all day and day time television I figure I'm pretty good at separating fish from water so if your after an experienced deckie who is happy to share and learn gimme a pm. I can share fuel costs also and I'm pretty flexible, anytime is good! Thanks guys, Bobfish
  6. Hey locodave, Great topic, im always happy to share this story My worst experience happened a while ago down at bluefish point. I was there with a mate spinning for pelegics and had been fishing in a really sheltered spot for a while before we decided to shift. We decided to sit and have our lunch while watching the swell at our new spot. 30 mins later without an even average size wave and we were into it. Soon I was popping away, when the water in front of me sucked right out, and the biggest bloody wave I have ever seen loomed up. It was huge At this point i was thinking why do I always have to choose these dangerous sports? Downhill mountain biking broke my arm, Kung Fu broke my wrist and fishing was about to get me in a lot of trouble too! I turned and got about 4m before it hit me, and because it hit me from the back, it took my legs out and I went over backwards. The swell turned me over and I can vividly remember the feeling of barnicles grating my arms while I tried to grab onto something and couldn't. I got pushed along for about 10m before my leg got wedged between a big boulder and the ledge. I was never going to go in as the wave pushed me towards the back of the ledge but I figure that having my leg wedged saved me some serious grief. To give you an idea on the size of this wave, my mate was standing on a higher ledge, with his feet at about my head height, behind me....... he got wet up to his waist. Not my proudest moment, but as a result I have MUCH more respect for the ocean. Cheers Bobfish
  7. Hey Peter, thats great to know. Ive been hitting curlie and bluefish with livies about 4 times a week at the moment. Not much going on as yet, few rats, tailor and plenty of salmon. I might pop up to whale this week for a squiz. Will let you know
  8. Great report there Nanook Did you see what those guys were getting the kings on? I was up at the crack of dawn live baiting and managed 2 massive tailor, the biggest going 75cm's that took a 25cm yakka, but alas no kings
  9. Im just as confused Mariner.... Edit. I think i've got it, the only options are factors of nine, its not the numbers that change each time its the pictures
  10. Hey mate, you wont beat the live ones for a solid king hookup. Buy a squid jig or two and learn how to guse them. That will be a much more rewarding investment of your time and money...
  11. Im with Red... how big were your hooks? Jews arent afraid of a bit of metal so I use a 2x 10/0 hook snell rig when using slabs. They have mouths like buckets so your better off with a big sharp hook that can penetrate and hold on. Let it run til you want to strike I say. Not every jew is the same nor every situation. 10 seconds seems like a lifetime to me when i'm about to set the hooks.... Best of luck Bobfish
  12. Hi Roberta, Ive been too busy poppering kings from the stones to realise my jew itch was getting worse.... I love the big kings but amongst all the surface strikes and blistering runs, i've been craving that sight of a silver mulla washing up on the sand. The alarm bells have been going off recently and I figure what better time than now? Thanks for the update, Bobfish
  13. Hey Raiders, Just wondering if anyone has been up to the lake since the recent big seas? I wanna chase some jews and need to know if the lake is tidal and open to the ocean... Thanks Guys. Bobfish
  14. I second that 'Dan and Greg'. Spin up a sambo then send it out alive with a couple of 12/0's in it at North head or around the point to blue fish. The whalers will give you some serious schtick on 15kg gear Bobfish
  15. Hey Jay, Mates of mine spent three nights up at north Narrabeen earlier this week for six or so bronzies. They were using fresh caught squid. Might be worth a shot, but take some wire just in case. As for me, Il be hiking for 45 mins to soak some livies off a secluded ledge, in hope of an early season hood Best of luck for the weekend everybody, Bobfish
  16. The poor old fella probably got the shock of his life. I can't imagine seeing my ride home disappear under water. You forgot the apostrophe in your "It's"....
  17. Musty, I think there is some real merit in that. Firstly it has to be a highly tuned tool used for separating fish from water Mrs Swordfisherman, those are seriously classy outfits you have there.....who would have thought holographic guides...? Im thinking now i will spend a bit more dosh and find something similar (albeit a little less impressive). Also, she isn't yet my wife but the way she was fishing I should be putting a deposit on a ring! Thanks for the helpful hints raiders Bobfish
  18. Thanks for your help brickman, caranx and lighthouse2k, I never feel right when I'm fishing with substandard bait or gear so i will stick with the gars. I still haven't forgiven myself for trying to spin pilchards and having a 10kg plus king follow them up then turn away for half an hour that's fishing though. Do you guys catch your own? and if so is it possible to catch them off ocean rocks? I hate handing over money for bait because I usually catch my own (slimies, yellowtail, prawns, squid and red crabs) depending on what I'm targeting. Also, can you regularly catch squid off the ocean rock platforms? I can get them in the harbor easily enough but its a real nuisance keeping them alive until i get to the rocks. Thanks again for your advice, Bobfish
  19. Hey raiders, I've been spinning gars with success for a while but a packet of 5 gars can cost up to $10. I usually live bait in open water then spin in a nearby wash. Do you think I could use the expired yakkas instead of the gars? Just wondering if anybody has tried it with good results? Cheers, Bobfish
  20. Hey hoges, My understanding is when a fish is hunting at night its because it can see its prey or sense its movement through the water. I target ep's after dark with very similar methods and plastics to during the day, with good results.
  21. Hmmmm, you might be onto something there Ceph. Pink might be overdoing it a bit, maybe I could put some pink line on it instead. Any ideas for a reasonably priced combo then? Im used to buying extravagantly expensive gear, and have no idea about the low end stuff
  22. Hey raiders, I finally took my better half out for a fish after a year of nagging. I packed the gear begrudgingly and went up to narrabeen lake to float some unweighted baits just incase some resident flatties had woken up from their slumber. Turns out she can bait a hook, cast just as far as me (albeit a little less accurately ) and on the whole loved the experience. We caught a heap of flatties to 65cm and a nice fat sole too. It was a great first session! Now im posed with a problem.... she needs a fishing rod fitting of her taste. So its gotta be pink or red. I figure graphite is the way to go, and a nice spinning combo suited to flatties, bream etc is the goal. Any ideas guys? Maybe some of your gf's or wives have some tips. I figure the price range should be around 300 bucks. Cheers Bobfish
  23. Now thats a tool post! .... Haha. Nice session squid boy
  24. Hey Miller, Boiling the head should do the trick. At the ten kg mark the jewels will be around the size of an almond...
