    Optimax 115

I am also running a 115 etec on my 5.5m platey. I think that its a great engine, it pushes me along at 35kts in calm and gets on plane easily enough with 5 on board.Last trip out we travelled wide of kiama canyons at 4500rpm trolled 7hrs and back at 3700 total of 100km and used 80lts of fuel. I am running rebel prop. I have heard nothing but good reports with optis though. Hope this helps. Luke
  2. TAlked to a friend who lives at port on weekend, he said that there are fish there but they are 40mile out at the moment where the cooleer water is, as water on the shelf is at 27degerrs -too hot.Apparently there has been some really good dolphin fish taken in last week. Cheers Luke
  3. They do go hard. Aparently one of the fastest fish. Looked like she was gunna pass out after the fight, then 10 mins later it was still herstrike a marlin hooked up but after a 1.5hr fight it swam at speed toward the boat and spat the hooks. Good fun, cant wait to get into some this season.
  4. yaeh she was pretty stoked. We are in Kiama GFC fished the interclub in March and she caught a Wahoo which weighed 19.5kg, she would have taken out top female and best other game fish, but someone who was up late tying doubles didnt double check the 10kg outfit and it was 100mm too long so that fish was disqualified .Good fish though yum yum.
  5. RED HERRING, the water temp on way out was shelf 19.5, canyon 18.7, wide of canyon 19.2.
  6. We arrived at kiama ramp at 6 and headed for the bait grounds.Bait wasnt interested in any of our jigs so we headed for the canyons.Dropped lures in at the shelf and shortly came across a bait ball on the drop off.Continued trolling east and first hit was in 300 fathoms. The missus was on the rod and shortly landed a nice albacore around 8kg. Reset lures and within 15 mins we were onto another fish.Shortly after another albacore was landed.Another was landed 20 mins later but this one felt a little different on the rod it was fighting like a big snapper, Got it near the boat to see it was foul hooked in the tail. After last weeks success with big fin, Lisa(wife) was spewin cause she had to work that day so she was quite happy to pull in a few fish today. After a bbq lunch reset and land a few more fish. In total 8 Albacore ranging from 7 to 13kg. Great day out, its been a long time since ive seen water so blue and clear.
  7. Hi KTID, Unlucky about the lack of fish. How far out were you guys? The fish from Kiama to JB are quite wide at the moment, there is a temp break at about 300 -500 fathoms, this is where the fish seem to be.There were reports of tuna to 76kg taken off JB on Thursday. Good to see the marlin starting to show up. Cheers Luke.
  8. Ungry, Yep we finally had a few snags ans kebabs. In regards to boat the design is from Queensland and was bult by Tony Nevans of port stephens, its bacically a scaled down version of his boat but with different cabbin setup.
  9. Hi there , we fished wide of kiama canyons on Thursday. Stopped in 30 fathoms and it was full of bait and loaded up the bait tank, before heading wide of Kiama canyons.Dropp the lures out at the canyons and head east foe about 30min then both riggers go of and two little albacore are landed.Reset lures and about 15 mins later left rigger gets hit and runs for about 400m.After a 45min fight on15kg and some close calls a YFT of about 40kg was bought abourd.Decied to have some smoko and cook a barby, so just put out 1 lure while cooking.10 mins later it gets nailed by another albacore of 9.6kg who went for a surface run at the boat and wrapped around the motor and cut a small rubber pipe on the back. Not knowing what it was thought it best to head for shore as we were 50k out. Arrived back in harbour at 12.30pm with a good feed.
  10. I fished at hamilton on a boat called bullet, cost was $100pp and we got coral trout, flower cod and spanish mackeral around 15kg.Crew was great, most of the boats up there use handlines though. I heard that if you can get yourself to whitehaven beach golden and giant trevalley can be spun up off the beach. 11. Left Shellharbour ramp yesterday at 1pm for a bit of a troll and cube session. Conditions were absolutely perfect as far as weather goes, glass all the way out.Arrived at start of the shelf 30 mins later and trolled a combination of skirts and minows hoping foe a tuna.About an hour later we arrived at the Canyon so decieded to pull lines and start to cube and fish the bottom while waiting, Current was at 2-3 knts which made things a little hard as didnt want a two hour drive home so we just kept motoring back to the mark and fishing the bottom. The first Gemfish Lisa with sore arms after pulling up her first deep sea fish Ended up with three gemfish and some green eye shark bycatch which went back. Sun started to set so we headed back in. Also was greeted by a passing whale amout 5mts from back of boat which scared the s*#t out of us. Luke.
  12. Nick i run a 115hp etec on a 5.7m plate boat weight about 1700kg, Last trip out departed Shellharbour ramp and fished Kiama Canyon about 40km out ran about another 5k out there, left motor idoling while fishing bottom and cubing about 7 hrs and back in, the trip out and back running at 4800rpm 28kts and used only 73liters of fuel which could have cut down more by going a little slower. I am wrapped with my etec and comsumption.
  13. Thanks for the help guys, Much appreciated
  14. Hi, im Looking at purchasing a Furuno fcv585 sounder with 1kw transducer,Just wondering if anyone has one of these sounders and if so what depth can this unit reach. Thanks Luke.
  15. Left shellharbour ramp this morning at 7am, after stuffing around for a bit to get bait it was off to the shelf. Motored out to 10k before then pulled lures till we were past the canyon without even a look. So we decieded to try the bottom, after several hours and a sore arm from winding (i dont have a winch) we ended up with 4 Gemfish to 80cm and a rubber lip mowie 48cm and a school; shark about 95cm. There was no talk of any blue eye on the radio just jemmies. All in all a great day out. No pics as i forgot camera. Luke.
  16. Hi all launched boat at 1:30 Got a couple of livies and headed out to the fad to see what was around.Burleyed, floated pillies, and live baited for about an hour later in the afternoon for nothing.Headed in close and anchored up and burley haping for some snapper on sunset.Within 30 mins yakkas show up but no slimies, managed 2 squid at about 35cm and then after dark the taylor showed up, after baging 3 of these pull anchor and head home.Unfortunatly no snapper, oh well next time.
  17. Dan, i was at the Kiama fad last night with unweighted pillies and live bait and burlying hard but not a dollie to be seen.Water was 22, back down from 23.6 two weeks ago.Only one marlin caught out wide all day saturday too i think we may have seen the last of the dollies this year, down south anyway.
  18. Yeah i know not a good shot, nearly fell over as a both of us were leaning over one side and a wave hit just as i went to gaff him, at least it was landed though.
  19. Just joined forum and heres my first report.Fished the fad off Port on Friday arvo with unweighted pillies with no luck, dollies were there but wouldnt touch our bait.Managed to jig up some slimies for live bait but again they would just come and have a look and swim away. Decieded to to go back in to the islands to try for a King, had out a live slimie in berley trail. 20mins later drag starts ripping off as livie gets hit, after about 10 mins fighting a healthy 90cm King is landed. With no other livies left in tank and getting dark decied to head in. I usually fish Kiama area, and have no problems burlying up bait in close, but tried to get some at Port at end of breakwalls etc and couldnt get a thing, could any one recommend any good spots to get bait at Port? Cheers Luke
