  1. Thanks Paul! I sure did, took the day off and went fishing A couple fish even comitted suicide, they must've known it was my b'day. lol Herby
  2. That's a WHOPPER!!! Congrats Lozza, that's an awesome catch. What bait was it taken on? Cheers, Herby
  3. Josh's fish ... pulled from a puddle (less than 1m of water). Not a bad way to fill in a couple of minutes whilst everyone else is using the restroom. lol Tony showing off his little barra! Pretty countryside and very relaxing! No jetskis Thanks CFD. Glad you enjoyed the read. I had a ball and will be back later on in the year, so watch this space. There were a few big barras caught that week, but mostly on the troll. I was out with the purists and they would have none of that ... it was cast, cast, cast all the way! Make sure you get up to places like Peter Faust and Awoonga Dams one of these days as they truly are beautiful spots and 50lb+ barras are worth the effort. Cheers, Herby
  4. Hello Fishraiders, It's been a while since I last posted. Been a very busy start to 2006 so I've had very little time to fish, let alone post reports. March had rolled around again and it was time for another long w.e. at 1770/Agnes Water to have a fish and just get away from it all. I was meeting a few friends up there and the plan was get offshore to target the mackerel, tuna and other pelagics around the headland and if conditions allowed, fill the esky with some nice reef fish at the inshore wrecks and reefs. However, upon arrival and checking the weather forecast it soon became apparent that the chances to fish salt water were very very remote. A big SE’erly swell had the local surfers excited but not the visiting fishos and unfortunately the offshore armada stayed dry for the entire 4 days. Being a versatile bunch, the decision was made to fish the estuaries and creeks and we caught plenty of good fish including trevally, estuary cod, bream (both yellowfin and black), flathead and moses perch. As the poor weather (25-30 knots) persisted for the entire w.e. we were running out of options and the decision was made to give Lake Awoonga a go, although none of us were really set up for impoundment barra fishing. We hooked up with Tony (and his son Josh) who owns and runs the local Agnes Water Bait & Tackle store. Tony’s local knowledge proved invaluable and he supplied the lures and info for us barra novices on how to best fish for our target species. We rigged up the tinnies (neither of which had an electric unfortunately) and left Agnes not long after 3am to give ourselves an early start, that put us at the boat ramp at around 4.30. After a short run and we arrived at Tony’s spot X, and I must say the place looked amazing just on sunrise, with a thin layer of fog rising off the mirror-like water. Any plans to remain as quiet as possible went out the window, as all of us soon found our lures dangling from green vegetation or dead timber. I think we sounded like a herd of elephants crashing through the timber, although I must say the rods we were using (offshore spins sticks and estuary rods) were not designed for that type of fishing. Still, no excuses! After a while, with our confidence building, and the casts becoming more adventurous, the first Barra of the day hit Roz’s lure and stayed connected, and after a brief struggle she landed a nice little barra into the boat. Her first ever, and therefore also a PB. We quickly snapped some photos, before releasing the little (approx 60cm) fella back into the water. It didn’t take long before I managed to get on the board as well. A good cast was rewarded with an almost identical fish to the one Roz had caught earlier. This was also my first barra, so more photos were taken and then that fish too was released. Tony and Josh fishing out of their rig, managed a fish each but even they couldn’t produce anyting much bigger. The closest we came to a ‘1 metre” model was when Josh’s lure was smashed just meters from the boat but unfortunately the fish didn’t stay connected. The big splash was a reminder that what the fish we had caught that morn were merely babies and that plenty of ‘big mamas’ were there to be caught. The rest of the morning passed by without any more action but it was a magical morning to be out fishing. I had a blast and will definitly be back to hunt down one of the ‘bigguns’. Roz and I purchased our ‘successful’ barra lures as mementos of our first barra experience. Can’t wait until October when I’m up there next. Here's mine ... Back it goes ... Gooooone!!!!!!!
  5. That's good info and insight Allan. Appreciate you posting and providing feedback. Cheers, Herby
  6. Dave!!! Hope you have a smashing one champ. If you end up having a fish - may you catch a whopper but something tells me you'll be spending the day with the kids and family. All the best, Herby
  7. Awesome Dave!! Best of luck, look forward to reading and drooling over your reports whilst you travel through the USA. Should be a bit of a change from fishing the ol' Moruya River. lol Good on ya, keep safe. Herby
  8. Sounds about right Clutch ... waaaaay before my time, so I wouldn't know! Herby

  12. Motty, My hat off to ya! Some great fish there Glad you enjoyed yourself. I had my first go at catching a Barra 2 weeks ago and altho I managed only one fish that day, and it only went just over the 60cm mark, it was a thrill for me. I learnt a lot and found everything you have said to be true. Can't wait to get back there in Oct and have a another (better) crack at them! Cheers, Herby
  13. My virgin effort ... 9/10 and into the top 10!!! Might have to work onthe speed a bit Good fun Herby
  14. Awesome fish mate .... there haven't been many billies caught thus far this season on the sunny coast so considering how slow things have been, your capture is even more remarkable. Well done on the dollie too, fantastic looking fish aren't they? Well done, Herby
  15. Top brag!!! Some great fish there. When I was in Perth I tried to get on a deep sea charter that specialised in jigging .. unfortunately the weather stuffed us. Glad to see you got out and amongst them tho. Nice catch, well done. Herby
  16. Hey Martin, Thanks mate, altho that's not my woman in the pic I posted!!! That's my friend Roz, I was just using her as an example that there's plenty of women out there that enjoy boating and fishing (and know how to catch the bigguns) as much as the rest of us. Personally, I wish more guys would encourage their other halves to go fishing and have days out in the boat with them. Helen and I have some of our best times on the water TOGETHER! Cheers, Herby
  17. I'm a blessed man, I know! Here is Roz with a little spanish mack she took at 1770. Went 23.5kgs from memory Herby
  18. I wasn't going to reply, BUT temptation got the better of me! Personally, I think some of you blokes have married the wrong girl My girl is a champion deckie, she happily drives the boat, helps me launch and backs the trailer, loves having a fish and baits up and unhooks her catch without assistance. She brings the food and enjoys a beer/wine as much as I do and I'd much rather have her aboard for a fishing trip than most of my mates - NO CONTEST!!!! Regarding the general topic, I suppose it's easy to generalise so each to their own I guess. A friend of mine, Roz, is a champion angler who is 100% woman. She holds several australian records and has taught me heaps about fishing for mackerel and pelagics up north. You won't meet too many keener fishos than her and I dare say her fishing portfolio would put those of most other guys to shame. MrsSwordfisherman - good on you, love your enthusiasm and determination. Good catch there Swordfisherman! Tight lines, Herby
  19. Thanks Chris, Good advice mate. Will check it out a couple hardware stores later on this arvo and see what I can find. Will apply several coats and see if that keeps me dry. lol Cheers, Herby
  20. Hi guys, Got a problem I have noticed that on my last few trips offshore, that some water spray and rain has been leaking through the front storm covers (above the windscreen), most of the moisture seems to be seeping through the material around the zips. I had water drip down and onto/in behind my tacho and now it's f***ed. Cost me $500 for a new one so I want to make sure my colour chartplotter and fishfinder aren't next on the list. My question is this, how can I stop this from happening? Is it as simple as using a waterproof spray on the material? Is there a silicon type spray I could use? Will it harm/effect the plastic stormcovers (ie cause deterioration)?? Any other ways of waterproofing the storm covers? Cheers, Herby
  21. Billo!!! Gav, I was thinking the same as Billo ... the moon should help improve things so I'm hoping to get out this coming Sunday (6th Nov). Do you have plans to chase some fish as well. Will depart Mooloolaba .. in search of macks and tuna. Herby
  22. Gav, Sorry mate, have been invited down to Indy for the w.e. to enjoy some corporate luxuries so I'll be perving and sinking piss instead. Let us know how you go tho, as I'm keen to get out there for a mid-week fish soon. Thanks a lot for the invite ... we'll definately catch up before you leave eh? Cheers, Herby
