  1. cool - thanks guys. I'm guessing lights are the answer. Stronger light on the boat, perhaps fish around lighted areas (if available) - and glow sticks near the jigs. Interesting enough - we did try a jig with an internal battery powered light, but got no joy. I look forward to giving it another go :-) Mike
  2. Hey all Over the last few months I have done 2 "all nighter" fishing trips in Jervis Bay (really, from 12am onwards)... Each time I started going for squid at my usual squid spots (that *always* produce during the day), then headed out deeper (long nose point etc) to go for other fish. Both times I came up zero - nothing, nada, not even a nibble. So what's the prob? Do I need to use different jigs? Different spots? Or is Squidding at night just a waste of time? I should point out - both nights were very very dark. New Moon one night, and cloudy the other. My all round light on the boat isn't super bright (bright enough for its purpose). thanks Mike
  3. Great catch - well done. Morwong's are great fish. Mike
  4. You want to save them as mpeg4. should reduce the size, without reducing the quality (much) Mike
  5. What's a winter bream? ANSA records the Australian Record bream as 5.1kg. So 5.8 would be an Australian record - perhaps even world record. Sounds like you had fun though - which is cool. Mike
  6. I've been fishing on and off there since Christmas. A couple of spots (ask if you need GPS - but mostly you can find the spots on a normal map or the GPS forum on this sight). Squid: - Just north of Honeymoon Bay (Bindijine beach) - From Callala Bay Boat Ramp, head north to the closest Sancturary Zone (on the map). Out from the first Bouy you can catch some squid. Don't fish in the zone. Squid is best just as light is breaking, use colourful, fluro jigs. Kingies: - Lots of RAT Kingies have been hanging around just off Point Perpendicular. - Some Kingies are being caught at Long nose Point. - Middle ground always worth checking out (though I haven't seen any there). I can't help you with Flathead spots (though would love to find some if you know any). Mike
  7. The rods are duds.... return them ;-) Mike PS that's code for "I have no idea - life's funny at times"
  8. There is mathematical relationship between the length of an aerial and the frequency of the signal. That's the first problem. Not sure of other problems, but I suspect they exist. I suspect if you want your radio working at full capacity (and you do in an emergency) - you want a proper aerial. But to be honest - I'm not sure how much it actually matters (5% performance difference? 50% performance difference?) Mike
  9. Shoalhaven Marine Rescue Rescue (Website here) is the volunteer group that you want to contact. Awesome group - if you're down there with any possibility of regularity, it would be worth joining. Contact them on channel 90 (or 88). VMR Shoalhaven is their call sign. If you aren't a member - be prepared to give car rego, mobile, boat rego etc so they can track you down if something goes wrong (like you don't return). Mike
  10. NICE... the man goes fishing, leaves his tackle at home, doesn't wet a line, yet still ends up with a Kingie! how awesome is that! Mike
  11. Crookhaven heads. For a month (woohoo!). Will hopefully hit the river, the bite, the banks, and Jervis Bay. looking forward to it. And hoping for my first 1m+ Kingie (same hope as last year - though it didn't eventuate) Mike
  12. very true - mind you, it also says the post was edited - so I'm hoping it was added post-my comment. Mind you - it is possible I missed it. Mike
  13. I might have missed it in the report - but what was it? How big? I presume Kingfish..... Mike
  14. There has been a long drought - but last week I was determined to break it. Grabbed a couple of mates, and left late Wednesday night heading down to Jervis Bay. Arrived about 12:30am. The originaly plan was to grab a few hours sleep, and hit the bay 4am-ish (due to wind forecast, we had decided to forgo the Banks). However - when we arrived, we went: "Stuff it! What's 3 hours sleep ever done for anyone?". Our aim: Kingies. We'd heard mixed reports over the last week or so. Some people said flat. Others (from the LBG crowd) said the Kingies were going nuts last week - and were trapped in the bay due to current conditions. Our hopes were mixed. Was in the water by 1:30am, and headed to the "never fail" squid spot - Honeymoon bay. A dark moonless night - the bay is awesome at night! The spot almost failed us, only producing 1 squid. Note to self: Must discover some other squid spots in JB. Headed to Long Nose point to fish in the sunrise - picked up a whole lot of small fry - little snapper, small shark, catfish, large pike, eel, plus a whole bunch of other stuff - nothing really to boast about. There was heaps small stuff on the sounder - but nothing big. After the sun rose headed to middle ground. Lots of baitfish, but nothing big. Trolled the cliffs at Pnt Perpendicular, then headed around to Drum & Drumstick. The predicted wind started rising, and so we anchored behind the rocks and put out the light gear. Started to pick up lots of different stuff. Leather Jacket (some BIG ones!), maori wrasse, big sweep, little snapper, etc. All of a sudden my light 6lb rod started stripping line! Lots of fun bringing in a kingie! A small kingie. The smallest kingies I've ever seen! 43cm! As the wind rose, we headed back into the bay, checked the sounder at long-nose, then back to honeymoon bay for another go at squid (once again - only produced 1!), then back to Callala Bay. Cleaned the boat, fish, and headed home to collapse in bed. An awesome trip - no real kingies to be found (by us), but it was good to hit the water. Mike
  15. I'm heading down tonight to fish tomorrow - weather ain't looking fantastic, so it's not likely I'll hit the banks Anyway - I'll let ya know how we go. Mike
  16. Heading down to Jervis Bay on Thursday. Forecast is up to 20k NE wind. What's it like in those conditions? Any particular places to hit to get out of the wind? Mike
  17. Hey All I wonder if anyone can give me pointers for fishing Jervis Bay? I've fished there quite a few times before, but keen to learn more about the bay, and check out a few new spots. I normally head out of Callala Bay Ramp, over to Honeymoon Bay for some Squid, then off to middle ground or long-nose point for Kingfish/snapper. What other spots should I try? In particular - around the headlands or Bowen island? Any good flathead spots? Any other good kingy spots? I've got the fisheries map that shows me all the best fishing zones - coloured Red (how nice of them to show us the best spots! Just kidding ;-) No need to give me secret spots - just whatever is fairly public. I'm heading for a day on the bay on Thursday (which is looking like there's going to be a fair northerly blowing :-( Mike
  18. The improved speed, torque and sound was brought about by removing the boat's name? (Krull). I've heard of streamling your hull - but that's an amazing improvement! You owe me 10 points. Mike
  19. It was a good episode - though I must say I was slightly disappointed with the lack of mention of Ross Hunter and the crew - though I may have missed the plug. Mike
  20. Oh yes - she will be mine. Yes - she will be. That's part of the addiction. Mike
  21. There's three limits: - Bag limit - per person, per day. So 2 people in a boat can bring home 40 flatties (20 each) - Possession limit - per person, includes the fish you've just caught, and the fish in your freeze. So technically, if you have 10 flatties at home in the freezer, you can only catch (and keep) 10 more whilst fishing. This stops you picking up 20 flatties a day over 10 days (200 in total) and selling them at the market. Possession limit is the same as bag limit in NSW. - Boat limit. Max of a type of fish allowed to be caught by a boat. Gemfish is the only example in NSW with a boat limit, and you are limited to 10 per boat per 24 hour period. So if there are 10 people in the boat - still only allowed to catch 10. Mike
  22. Are you talking about an aerator? I've got a battery powered one but it seems to have problems with more than a few small livies, and certainly Squid don't get enough (20l bucket). Mike
  23. No worries - good to know they're plentiful thanks Mike
  24. what? All of them? Maybe I go to the wrong stores, or haven't been looking at the right area in the store - but I haven't seen these buckets before. I've kept my eyes open for a nice live bait solution - and they look good. Of course - I may have just missed it. But I'm a creature of habit - there are only three stores I normally visit. I'll specifically ask next time. So if they are everywhere - I just missed them. But if only a few places stock them, I would love to have a few hints on where! Mike
  25. Who stocks the Plano bucket? (Couldn't find one at Bias) Do they come in different sizes? How big can you go? I would love a 5-10L one... Mike
