  1. i have the same rod and think that it is too light for a big king. it is ok for rats. if you put anything more than a baitcaster reel on the rod it is prob going to be out of balence and you may snap the rod with any more drag than aprox 4-6kg. just my thoughts mate. you could still give it a try it might be great fun. cheers alex.
  2. turtleback was the gulp lure they were using Byron, it looks like a mix of blood/sand worm. i might have to buy a pack!
  3. mate you might have a quiet few months on the lbg scene on the east coast during winter, that is unless you live in the northern third of the country. most of our gamefish travel with the warm currents and are up north for the winter. hope that helps a little.
  4. i reckon gar work the best.
  5. single hook is the go, they have a much harder time spitting them out. Salmon rarely spit out plastics but often spit out metal slugs ect,
  6. i've gotta go under the knife soon to get a screw in my wrist but it sounds like a plan, pm me when your keen. hopefully i will be back in action soon. cheers alex.
  7. try in summer time!
  8. the pillies i used must have been salted with fertiliser or ratsack cause the didn't even get a sniff
  9. i personally don't reckon salted baits work as well as fresh bait, i have used salted pillies once while a mate used iqf pillies we were fishing for tailor and i ended up using his bait cause mine was useless.
  10. try scrubbing with laundry powder
  11. tough luck mate, the curse of the plastic rodholder. i've had similar problems with them, it sucks losing gear. i only use stainless holders now. by the way top fish!
  12. is it just me or do some of the lure fishing records look like gross exagerations? what do you think?
  13. if fishing for game fish, long tail tuna etc. use either live gar or yakkas which can be caught on a bait jig with bread or prawn etc. you then suspend it under a torpedo float on about 6ft trace or just long enough so the birds can't kill it, they will still try believe me. you should have this rig connected to an outfit with at least 400m preferably 600m of 10 to15kg line on it or you can get spooled if you get a big longtail. they run very fast! while your livebait is out you can fish for bream etc. with light gear to keep you entertained. if you cant get livies you can sit and wait and watch with a casting rod rigged with a high speed popper and cast at fish cruising by. patience is a serious virtue when fishing off breakwalls for game fish, at some stages of the day you wonder why your even sitting there, however i'm sure that i will keep trying till a nail a good fish. good luck!
  14. just wondering if anybody has been catching any mackeral off the gold coast lately?
  15. i very much doubt that your fish was a coral trout or cod. these two species are very rare to get caught as far south as brisbane, but i suppose anything is possible
  16. I like grunter, coral trout and pearl perch. I can't see how flathead can possibly compare! but i gues it is a matter of taste ay!
  17. nice work byron and co! i've decided i will take your advice Byron and buy myself a weatherstation with a barometer built in. still it won't make up for the years that you have put in chasing those mysterious jew, but any help i can get the better ay! I bet you wish you had anchored a little closer to the action, i'm sure you will next time. All up a good session none the less. Great report I always get a laugh when i read your reports. eg. numbray. Any way I'm in Brisbane now so it's back to the drawingboard for me and fishing spots etc. but it should be fun. see you on the northern rivers somewhere. cheers Alex
  18. josh i get out there in my 4m tinnie if the weather is good so you should have no probs in your boat.
