Austwave Mate; be careful fly fishing is one of those sports that should come with a WARNING. It is bar-none one of the most enjoyably addictive pastimes you will find. As for a set up. My first was a pflueger. I payed no more than about $70 for the Rod, Real, Line and leader. It was a 5/6 wt that I managed Flathead Bream and Chopper Tailor in and around Iron Cove to Bass and Yella in SEQ. This rod has now been retired (Broken) and has been replaced with numerous other rods and reels. The moral, i guess, is not to spend a great deal of money on the rod that you are going to learn with you WILL inevitably break it. Enjoy your new-found pastime/addiction Squizy

I love my Fly fishing; unfortunately, I do not get out that often. The biggest buzz for me is catching fish on one of my own flys

I recently purchased a great little 4 piece travel rod, a Pflueger PFLEX66 6'6, 6-12lb line weight. Great action for a light to medium actioned 4 piece rod..... Did I say 4 piece.... Oops mine is now 5 piece. Does anyone out there know if the tips to these travel rods can be purchased separately? Squizy

Hey there Steve O My back is still ok, however, I am more the lazy fisher. I have a 25 hp Johnston and when approaching the boat Ramp, whilst still in forward motion I flick the leaver on the motor to shallow drive and with the motor at an Idle I knock it into Reverse and increase the Idle just enough to lift the motor locking it into the shallow drive Position. I do the same when moving away from the boat Ramp into deeper water to lower the motor. I don't believe that this is harmful for the motor as it is a smooth action and is achieved without excessively revving the motor. However if it is harmful I am sure that someone here will be only too willing to tell me so.

Nice work Slinky and a great read to boot. As a fellow fly fisher I understand the joy that you must have felt landing fish in front of those other fishos. Usually it is me tying myself in knots whilst watching others landing fish on spin gear. Oh and I think it should be mandatory for all Raiders to call Hodgey when they land fish, knowing Hodgey he would really appreciate it.

Wow This thread takes me back to when I was a wee lad living on the banks of the Murray R. For Shrimp as previously mentioned Sunlight soap is the key; however, we use to throw a bunch of gum leaves in the mix. It never failed. For the humble Yabby, Carp... yes that is right Bloody old Carp. The yabby just can’t get enough. Opera house nets, drop nets or drum nets it doesn’t make much difference. And boiled up in a big old copper on the river bank with a handful of salt all washed down with an ice cold beer. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Carp..... ah Yes.... Great fun .... They will swallow almost anything; however, as previously mentioned corn seems to be the go. Although you can’t go past a hook full of garden worms either, bread also works. Have fun boys and throw a couple up the bank for me.
