  1. Great report Cam I bet you had a ball with those two old buggers. Great fishermen and top blokes to boot.
  2. Just one thing to say mate - nice gloves! Oh, and not a bad fish either!! hehehe Chat soon
  3. This is what it is all about. I wish my loops were as graceful as these...
  4. concidering fish will you be targeting and the size and weight of your lures; go the Spin reel. I grew up with spin reels on the Murray R, then moved to Darwin where I was totally turned and became an avid bait caster user IMO there was no better reel to throw a lure. I then moved to the east coast of Aust and was introduced to small SP, HBs and light line GSP chasing Bream, EPs and Bass. You just can't throw light lures as well on bait casters, I now have a range of light spin reels for light fishing and use my Bait casters for mid sized lures. Good Luck Squizy
  5. Thats topps were you fishing with worms.
  6. Great Ride Bob. Tinny hey.....
  7. Mate What a great day out! I wish I was there Who could want for more. Squizy
  8. I used to love going to the Greek festival in Darwin they do the best octopus. they load up the cement mixer and leave it for about 1/2 hour or so before cooking MMMMMMM. Chilli Occy and Beer for me, Baklava and coffee for the Missus. Squizy
  9. I have fireline in differing sizes on about twelve of my rods and have never had this problem. I use to have problems at my knots with the smaller line 8lb right down to the smaller stuff at 2lb. The fireline use to cut through my FC or monno leader material until I tied a double in the line before tying on the leader. I use a 30odd turn bimini twist to form my double as it is close to 100% line strength. Squizy
  10. Sorry mate I can't see what all the fuss is about. I don't use all of the functions on my existing mobile yet alone a super gadget such as the iphone. Squizy
  11. Crikey Skip that little girl of yours is growing up, and by the looks of it, it is time that you sent par home as well. Are Tuross flathead on the endangered list yet. Well done all. Nic and I can't wait to get back down there. Squizy
  12. Well done - Karen isn't it?? Ooops, no , it's Christie!! Obviously a chip off the old block - just much better looking!! Enjoy your holiday in that piscatorial paradise! Very jealous I'm not there with you guys - but some of us have to work....or something!! Take care, keep up the good work giving your dad a run for his money!! Squizy
  13. With respect to the knot I use the Albright as stated by AJ; however, I double the braid (usually with a small bimini twist). Doubling your braid will prevent it from cutting through your mono or fluro. With respect to the reels I never hose them down under pressure as this can force salt into them. Instead, if my reels have been subjected to salt I take them along with my rods into the shower..... Yes, laugh if you will, but not only do I end up clean but so does my equipment..... and a bloke just has to have clean equipment. Squizy
  14. Well done A great day and a great feed to boot.
  15. I can't take the cred for this lot. An old mate of my fathers has all this and more hanging up in his shed. This shed should be listed as another great wonder of the world. there is a little of everything.
  16. Well Hodgey you never cease to amaze me. Well done Ol' mate. Those Snags look familiar........ Are they... Mate you realy have to give Dene a lot of cred for those Pics; without him you wouldn't get your mug online. Squizy
  17. Here are a few old Lures that were picked up along Old Man Murray.
  18. G'day Breamhntr Flyfishing..... once you begin is the insatiable itch that you just cannot itch; it is probably one of the most addictive things I have ever done. For beginners I purchased a pfluger 9ft 5wt from my local tackle store (complete with reel line and tippet) for around $120 this I found to be an extremely versatile wt as it caught me everything from Bass and Yella belly in SEQ to Bream, Whiting and Flathead in Sydney and the NSW South Coast. I then went into a Flyfishing specialty store in Sydney 'Pro Angler' in Drummoyne where the finer art to the sport was explained to me. I suggest you go to a flyfishing Pro as opposed to a mega tackle store; here you can ask all of the questions that you want and will be guided in the right direction and not necessarily just in the direction of the cash register. The 5wt is a fairly versatile wt it is large enough to throw poppers for Bass and Bream, as you mentioned, and it will still present a delicate dry or wet for trout. Have a look “on line shopping” and you will be able to pick up some real Cheepie’s; however, “buyer beware” you get what you pay for. I picked up a couple of saratoga rods in 5wt and 8wt for around the $40 mark they do the job but that is about it. Whereas my 8wt Salt Series Stalker is an absolute treat to cast.
  19. Yes Hodgey My father has two of these implements in two different sizes, Big and Bigger, they have two large chrome blades on each with large brass beads (panted red) separating each blade and what use to be red wool over the XXL trebles. I will have to Give the Ol' fella a call and see If I can get a couple of Pics. He also has a couple of (Halco, i think) large softish plastic lures on a similar shape to stump jumpers that I believe were designed to be par filled with water in order to adjust their swim depth. One of his old fishing buddies has a large shed with 100s of large old lures hanging from the rafters and beams that he finds along the banks of the Murray.
  20. Hey fellas I would have to agree the Lake Police "Jackel" is a top lure but at $30 bucks a pop a little too expensive for me to throw around the timber in current that Ol' Man Murray has to offer. Big Bibbed lures swim bib down with the trebles high and behind the body of the lure. When snagged these tend to catch on the bib, back off with the pressure and it floats free. This also makes Spinner baits prefect for the job with an upturned hook that is protected by the blades, no snagges. Stephen
  21. seb I grew up in the area, well about 100km upstream. Hodgey is on the money... no burly in the river the current is too swift. I prefer a Predatek HB lure around 70mm yellow with black stripes or spots, attached with a loop knot. Around timber and also dropoffs around clay banks; the fish will be facing upstream, as this is where their lunch comes from. Bait, large Yabbie tails or smaller whole yabbie (live). Although the Gun bait would have to be Shrimp. Velvet or Sunlight soap can be usd as bait in your shrimp traps (local fresh shrimp is the way to go). http://www.predatek.com/b65ud.htm http://www.predatek.com/b65s.htm I have found that the Cod prefer the darker purple and black lures both HB and Spinner bait; whereas, the Yellas seem to hit the Yello and black patterns. Good Luck
  22. Roberta. Check out this. http://learnflytying.co.uk/category/all-videos-beginners/ good luck Squizy
  23. Hi Rizzo I haven't fished Summerset and Wivenhoe a few years now. I was unaware of there being Togas in either dam but there are definitely Bass in these two impoundments. There are a number of ways to to get on to a good bass in SEQ and all are dependent on the time of day. First light 06:30 am through to about 09:00 am; although, more success has been had of late in the evenings 4:30 pm through to dark. 1. HB Popper. Small poppers to about 45mm. A couple that have given me a lot of success are: a. Cicada style with rubberised wings that create a great wobble; slow reterve followed by a long pause. b. Bubble pop 35mm (opaque natural and dark colours) two to three short sharp jerks followed by a long pause. 2. SP bugs rigged on resin head jigs; fished slow with constant pauses (3-5 seconds) amongst the grass on the edges of the banks or along the edges of the weed banks. 3. Surface Fly. a. popper - Gartside gurgler. 2 – 3 sharp strips followed by a long pause. http://www.illawarraflyfishers.com.au/flyt...urgler_bass.htm b. Bass Ant. Slow figure of eight retrieve coupled with frequent pauses. During daylight hours; the higher the sun gets the deeper the fish go. With the use of a good sounder find out where the thermocline sits; depending on the water temperature this will be anywhere from around 16 feet to 25 feet. Look for the bait fish and you will find the Bass. 3. HB bibless. Jackal to 70mm in natural colours. Ecogear VT55sp. At a given depth count the lure down, this will give you an idea of how long to count your lure down before commencing a slow retrieve. 4. Spinner-bait (Bassman - white head silver blades with a blue shirt) fished the same as the HB. 5. SB. on a large enough head to get it down to the desired depth. 6. Subsurface Fly - Bass Vampire. 2 to three strips followed by a long pause. I hope this helps good luck SEQ is a great place to fish Squizy
  24. Yet another good read Please pass on my congrats to Dene re the monster Bream on the popper. It makes it easy to measure the fish when you know the leangth of your lure LOL. Squizy
