  1. I never DR them... tried them 1 time and had 2 massive hits; failed to hookup though (shuld blame a poormans downrigger setup for that?). Both time gulp squid was on the jighead so it won't spin.
  2. Nice fish! I had no clue where to cast plastics in such a brown water for kingies...
  3. Last time I was there in 1st week of October. Water has risen dramatically (they allowed boats), there was a lot of weed, algae and the shore/water looked like that: So the fishing was not good at all. After these recent rains I'd guess its not gonna be much better.
  4. Hi all, I've just got a jigging rod - but I'll not be able to go to "typical" jigging spots on the coast for some time. In the meantime - how can I use it in Botany, etc? Perhaps I can use it for livebait or trolling... but if I see a school on the sounder in, say 10-20 m of whater (Botany) - is that a stupid/hopeless idea to try perhaps a 200g jig on it? Has anybody done any of "estuary" - or "close offshore" jigging like that? Thanks
  5. Thanks, that was exactly what I mean. E.g. It looks like it is possible to get a "keeper" hook sliding under some pressure using a very simple knot (let me call it nail for now) - or even with a plastic tube. To me (IMHO) it is simplier than tying a sliding snell knot as described in the Book. Sure, it is yet to be proven in the field - hope the weather is improving... but I'm just starting using a live bait so it might take a while...
  6. Apologies for (partially, I hope) hijacking the discussion, but, Netic, may I ask you a question re. the sliding snell rig that was on my mind for the last week or 2? What is the exact role of the (sliding snell) knot - apart from the ability for the "front" hook to slide along the leader? E.g. when the fish is hooked to the "front" hook I'd guess (yet to catch a fish on this rig) that the hook slides under pressure to the "rear" hook, which stops the slide? I've tried a small piece of tube and a dufferent knot (think it may be called a "nail" knot) - the one you lay a tube along the shank and the leader, make couple of turns with the trace aroubd and pull through the tube - they all allow the "front" hook to slide under some pressure, no leader damage... Note: This is 100% a question of a newbie, not a criticism or suggestion "classic" rig is wring. Thanks
  7. Yes, when kingie grabs a bream lure you have a lot of fan. This kingie (apologies for "stealing" the topic by posting a photo) grabbed my son's 3" gulp in Port Hacking... 6lb bream outfit as you can see. 40 minutes chasing it on electric motor full throttle...
  8. Hard to judge - but definitelly bigger than a tennis ball.
  9. Hi all, I noticed a car towing a boat today - and some rods in the holder had big floats rigged. I used to fish with floats - but in my previous life in the galaxy far far away. Here I've seen people targeting blakfish or catching small fish from jetties, etc; floats on th eboat were big however. Does anybody know what are these big floats (fishing from the boat) are used for? Thanks
  10. Thanks, but your post seems to be cut... I'll try trolling like you've said - as soon as my downrigger arrives. Till then I have to fish at anchor, hence all these questions.
  11. Thanks Jewgaffer, Just to ensure I understand you correctly: teaser is one of those flashy things that look like big spinner blades? Also - as I understand it - this is a dead bait (squid strip) rig. Do I get this all the way to the bottom or should I let the teaser to hang off the bottom? If I'm at anchor with live yakka or squid - should the rig be "downrigger like" - e.g. heavy sinker hanging off the bottom, leader with swivel with yakka squiiimg below the sinker? Thanks
  12. Hi all, I've done some search but still not sure which rigs should I use when trying to catch kingsidh (Botany Bay) using live yellowatils/squid or dead bait? E.g. running sinker all the way to the hook, paternoster, running sinker above the swiwel, etc. Thanks
  13. No worries, could you please post the picture of your kingfosh rig instead? :D
  14. Pictures. Perhaps yours has a slightly wrong angle...
  15. Alloy. Looks exactly like yours, less the livewell bilge (might get one installed soon) I will post pictures later today. As I've said, I have 2 ducers + a speed tube between them. I was loosing bottom when on the plane speed a year ago (sometimes, but never at rest or slow) until the H/bird guy inspected the setup and suggested that all 3 items were too close to each other, so I got thjem wider apart; no prblems since. But this is not your case as you have only one ducer. Will have pictures here soon.
  16. Got 737 myself - with 2 transducers at the back (quad + widescan). No problems at all, the only time it loses the bottome is that when I get a weed around it. Transdurcers are at different angles, comparig to your picture; if you like I can post pictures of mine later today.
  17. Thanks Slinky, I've never tried dr'ging before (actually going to the shop today to find out what downriggers they can provide - prefer ones that do not require drilling holes in thje boat) - so your experience is very valuable. Will be thinking about bying a not very expensive jigging rod now. Cheers Alex
  18. A good balance must be in place there
  19. Yes and no - e.g. there was no activity visible on the surface (birds, whitewater, etc) - but all the fish was hooked no deeper than 3-4m; even caught one taylor on the popper (my 1st ever fish on popper btw).
  20. Kingie? Not, it didn't fit the net so I removed the lure and released it from the water.
  21. My 1st "report" post here. It is now when I managed to fix my home PC so decided to upload some photos. Kingfish taken on SP in Botany Bay This one didn't fit the net... And my wife caught this taylor on a metal lure, I guess you all can recognise where:
  22. Thanks for that. Never heard of them - will ask in my local tackle shop when I decide to go into jigging. Alex
  23. Apologies for the intrusion, Steve, may I ask you what do you think about trolling with a 200-300g knife jig as a sinker? Thanks Alex
  24. Thanks. I don't know what "PE" rod is - but I get the picture. Thanks a lot.
