  1. Hi all, I wonder - has anyboody tried putting a live yellowtail under the float? I'm wondering, if it is a good idea (I miss float fishing so much!) and if yes - what would be the rig - e.g. do I ned a sinker, etc Thanks
  2. BTW: slightly off-topic. These pictures (inc. close-to-the-water ones) were taken with one of those new compact water/shock proof digital cameras. So now I have a prefect fisherman's camera. I just don't worry about it at all - threw it back in the corner of the casting deck when I don't need it. Used it close to the water, with slimy/wet hands no probs. HTH
  3. Does whereis show kingies now? Got to use this service more Actually, the kingfish was caught all the way downstream - much close to the mouth. SO perhaps PH is not that full...
  4. Caught 6 legal breams (there were a lot of smaller ones - one my son caught on the ramp, while I was parking the car). Landing a kingfish on 3 lb line is fun - for the 1st 5 minutes...
  5. Decided to give Port Hacking a go after a long break (was not fishing for 6-8 weeks, and last time I fished PH was perhaps in 2007) Was on the water at 7am (I know its late!) at Grays Point, proceeded upstream. On the way there realised I forgot to bring the landing net. Well, I knew that as soon as I don't have a net something should happen. Started fishing for bream and it went well - me and my son scored plenty of legal fish... all had to be "comfort lifted"! Our hands were spiked countless times. Around 9-30 I've got another bite and instantly about half of my 3lb line was stripped from the spool - a kingie it was. I was chacing that kingfish on a leccy for 30 minutes and with the help of my son got in onboard. It looks like we were in the middle of a school of rat kings; unfortunatelly the strongest line we had was 10lb so we managed to get 1 another king onboard and loose the biggest one that threw the lure at me. But we managed to get the photo of it. The one that got away... A lot of people returning back from fishing yesterday could see me stuck like an idiot in the middle of the channel with the rod bent and my son hanging almost overboard. At one stage I was about to ask passing fishing boat for a net, but didn't even have time to signal them. Started raining at 11am and the bite stopped so we went back. Guess it was not a bad day for PH. All fish were caught on SP... and released.
  6. Hi all, I wonder - what would be the optimal size of a yellowtails for kingfish and such (within the Bay/Harbour, not offshore)... and what you do if the yakkas you are catching are bigger than that? Thanks
  7. I also believe that the bay is very quiet... whcih makes me very worried. I'd appreciate if people here - with mych more experience and knowledge than me - can comment on it - e.g. what is the reason, is there any hope, etc. After all the Bay is just few km's from the harbour which fishes much better, right? Would pocking the nose out of the heads make any difference? On a positive side - I went fishing on Sunday. 1st of all during my last fishing trips I was not able to catch ANY live bait. Fortunatelly this time I managed to get enough yakkas, though the were much more picky than last year. While fishing for the bait a legal sized trevally took the bait - it took some fight to bring it on a 4lb line. I started trolling and have noticed what seem to be a baitfish on the sounder... one school, next, etc and than I burried my brand new shark bomb straight into the reef. I managet to free it bit it has a funny nose now. Also I have spotted bird working right in the middle of the bay. Started throwing slugs into them, got some rasonable taylor... and my kid lost 2 bigger fish one after one near the boat... looke like salmon to me. So it was better than nothing after all.
  8. I have been told (in 2006) that it is known problem with E-tecs and by that time there was no solution. This has also been discussed on various fishing forums. My dealer fitted VHF for that purpose - no interference.
  9. Lets not confuse diferent types of software - is is better to have a dedicated on for each task, than a combo that does everything but at average at best. For the antivrus - I'd suggest (freeware) AVG For the malware/spyware removal - perhaps (despite recent changes) - adaware from Lavasoft. The free version would work fine with AVG resident/realtime protection (btw I use AVG 8 free and it never stopped after 20 errros - though I rarely have that much ) For the broken shortcuts, etc - perhaps CCLeaner will do for you? HTH Update: went through some sites that are known for leaving tracing cookies (sort of spyware). AVG 8 free detected all of them, (about 35, so more than 20) and moved to the valut no questions asked.
  10. Great motor! Congratulations1 I like the cover: asked my local dealer for the one for 60 hp 2 months ago ... still no answer, may have to contact Huett Marine to get one.
  11. Yes it is a shark bomb. Checked the website - it seem to have a hole in a fin, which my one does not. Will drill it myself, thanks, can't think of any reaso why I shouldn't be able to do it myself. Thanks
  12. Hi all, Some time ago I asked if my 7lb bomb is too light for the trolling I do. After reading the answers I decided to get a heavier bomb and got a 10lb fish-shaped shiny monster. My question is: on an old bomb I had 2 snaps/towing points: one - in the middle - for the wire and one - near the tail fin - for the release clip. On the new one there is only one "towing point" - in the middle. So how should I connect the release? I'm afraid if I use the middle point, the release line will be touching the fin... Apologies if I'm not making myself clear (new to the terminology)... perhaps I should draw a picture? Thanks for your help
  13. Is trevally alley just along of the container wall / Moulinex point? The reason I'm asking - I anchor there all the time and never lost an anchor... or this is a differnet spot? I have lost an anchor near Botany heads (I guess its Watts reef or something - heads on the same side as the oil warf). I've been shown the same set up as described above, but was advised to use a heavier cable tie, not a cord... yet to break it in real conditions.
  14. You're kidding, right? Will celebrate if I catch anything desent! Thanks, will do that. ==== Thanks to everybody
  15. Thanks guys, Have you cuguht any salmon or anything else on them triolling (alone or with attached bait)? xtosea, I will consider adding a ganged hook, or extra bead / longer loop so the hook hangs lover.
  16. Hi all, A good friend of mine suggested to troll these plastic octopus-like things around Botany & Hacking heads for salmon. I went to a tackle store (well known here!) and the gentleman behind the counter spent some time explaining to me how to rig them. So I've tried to replicate this: could anybody please have a look and verify and/or suggest any changes? I basically took a bean shaped sinker, pressed it into the head; widened a hole with a drill bit and pressed tight a piece of a rigid straight plastic tube into it. Than put through a leader, a bead and a loop knot with a hook... Thanks
  17. Have my 60 hp etec for almost 2 years now - can't complain at all (fingers crossed). All the time I forget it is there... no hassles at all.
  18. I have the humminbird too. Had the same problem initially (lost of signal and a spray from the transducer). Got help from the local guys (humminbird/BLA) - they looked at the photos of my setup and suggested some slight changes (I have 2 - normal and wide sight). Basically they said something like "move this X cms to the left, etc". Spray remains - because of the 2nd transducer, but I don't loose the picture ever again. Take a photo of your transducer and post it here as per suggestion above. HTH
  19. Hi all, On Saturday I tried the downriging for the 1st time "for real" - e.g. out of Botany heads, with dead rigged garfish as a bait. On a positive side I had a 1st bite - e.g. suddenly the road banged straight and the line went out of tje clip. On the negative side the fish didn't hook up; there was only the head of the garfish left on the hook. But one thing got me confused: my trolling speed was 4kts. I have noticed that the wire - when I'm trolling - is not vertical (maybe 30-35 degrees) - e.g. the bomb still getting dragged back despite the weight. Is it normal or I need a heavier one? Or troll slower? The angle means that - if I release, say, 10m of wire, the bomb depth is far from 10m? What do you guys do? Thanks
  20. Have the boat of similar size and fish Botany as well. I use seabreeze and BOM. As brickman said I never go out if swell is bigger than 1.5 or 2, pick my days. Also I prefer when wind is N, NE, etc. It looks like (and guys from local boating community confirm that, as well as my own humble experience) if it is south things got worse. I always have a backup plan - e.g. I poke my nose out of heads; if I don't like what I see I change the plan to a backup one.
  21. Thanks. So I know what should I expect. The rego sticker on my boat is neaer the rego number on the side... they will need to lean overboard to read it
  22. A very naive question from simebody who has not been checked (yet)... I assume they board to do the ispection? How to they do it safely (my boat is not big) w/out damaging the othe boat? Thanks
