  1. I have 2 transducers at the back - quadbeam and widescan. They are connected to the same unit so I don't run them at the same time - have a switch on the dashboard. No issues.
  2. Sorry guys, as I was suspecting I didn't make myself clear. I've seen (watching DVD's) that when downrigging, people (after dropping the bomb and the bait to the depth) have drag set on their rods - in a way that makes the rod bend. Not having the bomb on the main rod, no. I've also been told that this may not be good for graphite rods - hence the question - do I need to by fiberglass rods for trolling?
  3. Thanks. So I was wrong assuming that the rod should be loaded anyway to set the hook when the line is released from the clip (seen it somewhere). OK, that solves the question, I can use my favourite rods anyway. Thanks
  4. Hi all, I'm considering (slowly) a downrigger; I haven't yet picked up the brand (I'm not vey familiar with the concept) but I'd appreciate an advice on what kind of rod should be used. Form different DVD's around it seems like people are using their "nornal" casting rods - I'd be happy to do so but - being loaded all the time - will it be bad for the blank? So should I buy a fiberglass rod - more suitable for bait fishing? I hope I've explained the question clearly; apologies if not. Thanks.
  5. Thanks, guys Yes I can get 5 km/h... and perhaps there's no need to be stealthy. It is just looks like I can better control - (with remote) e.g. speed and direction. On this forum I learned that if I see a ball of baitfish on the sounder I can/should work it over and over - or maybe (I think) even stop dead on top - so that's why I was thinking about the leccy. Again, I'm learning - so please don't take it as I'm asking for help and than objecting - just trying to explain my thoughts.
  6. Hi all, I'm learning the art of trolling (so far using poormans downrigger) and would like to ask a question: I have a bow-mount leccy on my boat, whih is capable of trolling spped of 5 km/h (depending on tide, etc). Are there any reasons I couldn't use it for trolling live bait for kingfish? Thanks
  7. I can't call myself a kingfish guru (in fact this is my 1st ever kingfish season) but I managed to catch them on SP's from time to time. I use 6" sluggo. All have been caught near the surface (SP was not deeper than 3-4 meters). Retrieve works as following: - cast away from the boat - let it sink for a couple of seconds - keep your road tip down close to the water and do 1-3 rather sharp strokes towards yourself/the boat - make a 1-3 sec pause so it sinks a bit - repeat I vary the speed and sharpness of the strokes and the pause between them. HTH Alex
  8. Sorry for hijacking the topic... but could this (e.g. big chunks biten from the flesh of the slimy or yellowtail) happen "outside" the tank? Was fishing live yakkas and slimies today; no kinfish but a lot of squids and even octopus - they were grabbing my livebait and even sinkers; and frequently when I picked up bait from the water to check they (yakkas or slimies) have wounds like you describe (chunks of flesh) taken, Thought its a taylor but perhaps it was squid? Thanks
  9. Hi all, I wonder, what is the proper way to rig dead garfsh for trolling/casting so it does not spin? Thanks
  10. Fished in Botany today. Statred with casting lures around markers and buoys: nothing. Hot Water outlet - nothing. Went to catch squid - no squid, but plenty of yellowtails, mullte and 2 reddies that made a mess of my bait jig. After that - tried different spots and baits - (frozen) squids, heads and strips, live yellowtails and mullet... My sounder never looked so busy - a lot of baitfish - hude schools of them , a lot of fish arches... no bites. Aaargh!
  11. Godd stuff. Never had any luck with lures around markers new the runway... perhaps I should try again - will give it a go this Sat.
  12. Thanks. That's what I suspected would happen to the rod.
  13. Hi all, I prefer to rig my rods upfront - ususally 1-2 days before the trip and have the in my boat. This requires - to avoid tangles - a certain amount of pressure on the line so the lure sits tight in a hook keeper, which in turn produces the bend on the blank. I think this is OK for fiberglass rods - but what about graphite? IF its tsays under slightly bent for a night or 2 - is that OK? Thanks
  14. I guess that was the Sunday fishing in Botany was about - I also caught a lot of bait (yellowtail) but failed to find anything substantial. No kingfish
  15. Thanks. I suspected my sinkers are too light.
  16. Hi Southerly, I'll probably print your speed chart and have it on my dashboard! One guestion I'd like to ask if that's OK: what would be the right weight of a sinker to troll live bait (squid, etc) and for the jighead to skip stickbaits as you describe (never tried that but I think the idea is brilliant and I'll try it). Thanks
