  1. Thanks for that. Upgraded? DOes this mean something aftermarket? Thanks
  2. Hi all, I have a US-made jigging rod (threadlime model), whcih so far I was using for live-baiting (kingfish, etc). Next season - if I'm lucky - I may get far enough out of Botany or pehraps Harbour to try some "light" jigging - again kingfish and the like. I have Daiwa spitfire 3000 on it which will not handle jigging. Can anybody please recommend me a threadline (preferably a Shimano) that does not cost a fortune but can handle/suitable for jigging? Basically an entry level jigging reel? Thanks
  3. Well, across different fishing forums around (I do not recall names as I'm a member of only 3) there were a lot of complaints abount various models oh Humminbird (primarily in 7xx space) loosing GPS connection with no apparent reason. Mine (737) has experienced it maybe 3-4 times... not as frequently oas other people get. It seemd to be conformed its a firmware issue... whcih seems to be fixed right now. I have a cable and I update it via the cable (I do have a card, but still prefer to do it via the cable). The only abboying thing is the need to use 2x 9V batteries!
  4. A while ago - on various forims - I've seen different complaints re. Humminbirds loosing GPS connections. I've discovered an update for my sounder (which is not the latest model, so every other models should have it as well) that fixes the issue. The reason was "fixed some integrity check problems which were causing GPS loss outside the US". Just FYI, apologies if it has been doscussed elsewhere and is a well-known fact.
  5. I was bying gear from US (basspro, #$#$#$) - though not reels - never had problems with them. Now - when I'm lloking for shimano stradic/twin power reel - went there and noticed that tey seem to have better range? E.g. stradic comes in FI (avaliable here) model as well as "higher spec'd" MgB model????
  6. Ceph, If I may ask for some assistance here: wind knots cause me troibles sometimes. How do I check ths model I'm after actually has this Aerowrap II - e.g. do I trus what's on the web site and/or the box? For example, on Simano website Stradic has Aerowrap II in its list of features; Twin Power does not... Also, should it be listed on the box (e.g. website spec has Aerowrap II, but I get an older model reel from the store), etc. Or it can be checked by visually inspecting the reel? Thanks
  7. I've caught a good number of trout from Lyell (shore based)... Caught on all sorts of lures - minnows, spinners, tassie devils, sp's... but none on poppers, which I tried couple of times. And watching this trout rishing here and there and not taking surface lures makes my hands itch. This season will be trying popers when its dark (and the moon is on).
  8. OK, thanks, stradic gets the vote jim, re reading instruction manual - do you read japaneese? Asking because all my reels had manuals in japaneese.
  9. Thanks all, Looks like stradic is the one to go. Just one thing - nowhere (even for more expensive Twin Power) waterproof/washable drag is mentions, unlike say, Daiwa. So does Shimano produce this kind of drags?
  10. Hi all, I've been using my Shimano Symetre 2500 for a long time - casting metal lures for salmon & like as well as fishing for bass and throwing tasmanian devils for trout. The reel is worn and battered now and I'd like to replace it with new Shimano (for reasons specific to me I'm looking Shimano) reel; the budget is around $250. I'd appreciate and advise - what should I get: Stradic, Sustain... or should I go over and (if there's a compelling reason - e.g. a "big" feature that makes $$$$ worthwhile) to get Twin Power? Thanks
  11. Will be spending a weekend in Coffs harbour but without a boat. Could anybody please suggest a reliable fishing charter around? Thanks Alex

    Smoked!

Hi all, I new it will happen sooner or later; been told it happens when kingfish is hooked... Last Sunday, Sydney, yelowtail has been taken on the drop... Z-z-z-z-zzzzz - Ping!!!! Didn't even have time to ask for help, just screamed "kingfish"... It ran away from the boat for cover like a train. Now the question: it was a 35lb paternoster rig, 20lb braid, the leader snapped midway between the swiwel and the loop - so I guess no faluty knot or piece of tackle. What would be the next leader/line to upsize? Got 40lb braid and 70lb leader (of the same kind as my 35lb leader); should I use that? Or it is too much? Thanks.
  13. That explains it all, Many thanks.
  14. Hi all, So what are they? I don't have'em on my boat... but some boats I'm looking at do have these as options or standard. Thanks for the explanation. Alex
  15. Hi all, I feel that my current landing net is no longer good enough for me. I have an early environet thatw orks fine apart from a) long handle + net itself is dense so even I have trouble woving it through the water (my kid who helps with with the net has even more troubles); it is no big enough (bream & trout kind) so I lost some good fish already. Does anybody know here to find a good net which would not damage fish & tanle hooks (like environet) but will be bigger and it'd be asire to operate? What handle length do people prefer (fishing from the boat). Thanks
  16. I'm glad somebody [experienced] is not disliking the Humminbird. Considering 737 to perhaps 787 upgrade myself.
  17. You're right guys... never regretted I joined FR. The help I'm getting is unbelievable. Unfortunatelly there will be no footage: I tried to move my appointments for tomorrow but - alas - no luck in that. @#&&!^#&!$&!!!!! Biggest disappointment of my fishing life so far... don't know what else to say... Thank you all and Robbie and particluar.
  18. Thanks for that - will be waiting.... Can you add a video of setting up your downrigger (e.g. getting bait out and lowering the bomb), please Thanks
  19. Yes, I am using a jughead on dead bait (honestly I do not use dead bait a lot; but I used garfish and gulp squid = elive it counts as dead ) Another alternative I tried - and it looks like it doesn;t spin - is the "worm" hook with one of those lunker city underbelly wights - works like a keel. Having said that, I'm very new to baiting and (especially) trolling. Thanks Alex
  20. Thanks Robbie, As soon as humming is OK and the belly in the line is standard - I think I'm good for more. Hope the weather improves. I'll probably practice with hardbody or a sluggo before rigging live bait though. Thanks again
  21. Hi all, I have installed Scotty's 1050 and used it for the 1st time yesterday in Botany. I caught some OK fish (salmon, not kingie), but not on the downrigger. Because of the not very pleasent weather I had to cut my session short, but I have tried DR and would appreciate some advice (e.g. was the way I used it OK). So: 1) Not a question, but an impression if somebody is interested. I decided to use a rail mount (think it was 1027) - the one that needs a timber block. It took some handywork to have it installed on Quintrex rails... but it worked and I can't blame it now - its convenient (tyhat is assumed I used it prpoerly). If somebody is interested I can PM a photo. 2) I noticed the DR was produced kind of a sound when used - like quiet humming - is that normal? 3) The biggest question. When I was lowering the bomb (I was useing an eggbeater reel) I noticed that - even when I don't open the bail arm (just loosening the drag) - more line is taken from the spool than required - e.g. there was a slack/belly of the main line between the rod tip and the clip. So at 1st I thought that the line slipped out of the clip - it was entering the water like there was no downrigger used. Later I figured out to tale out the slack (there was some resistance when I was doing the) - after that the line was entering the water at wahet seemed to be the right place ( a clip leader distance from the bomb wire point of entry). Is that a normal practice? Hope I explained this properly. Many thanks Alex
  22. Tha way I've been told to set this up is to use a heavy knife jug (300g) as a sinker on with of the rigs described here, e.g. main -> swivel -> jig ->swivel -> leader ->hook(s). When slowly trolled this goes down relatively deep (not as deep as downrigger, but still deep). HTH Alex
  23. Very likely I'll be there too.
