  1. i just bolted the unit to the side of the back seat so it ws facing the driver and the transducer sat off the back (drilled holes in the tramson and attached it proper with bolts, the cables just ran over the enge next to the engine bay) Seeing as I would take the tinny out myself, it seemed to be the best place to use it Some sounders have a bracket that can spin around, so you can also point it to the front of the boat if you like casting from there..
  2. Didn't they also catch marlin of the tubes.. I am sure i wathced a video once where these guys get around 5 in a day off this spot it wasn't realy old footage either) I fished the tubes once, didn't get anything, but did see one kingie doing laps up and down the ledge ( I think he was giving us "the flipper")...good spot, but can get a little crowded.
  3. You got your drag.. I'm still waiting for my PENN parts and that was a year ago!!! Enged up giving up and getting a mate to machine a new real seat for me... Pretty Lame...
  4. i was on a quiet beach (little surf) and was working a 6" powershad in White.. My thinking was that it would look like a whiting bumping along. My first time trying it I hooked up to a unit of a Jew (two weeks ago) that took me for a ride for 10-15 minutes before the line parted.. In hindsight I should have had trace on it. Havent used slices or anyother lures at all, but I like the shads as its a slower retreive and even the slightest movement of water gets the "tail beating" Its also easier to jig a shad into a beach for a few hours rather than cranking a slice on all the time (particuallry at night) good luck
  5. If it was my choice, I'd go the charter special.. never heard anything bad about them and all the charter boats (no pun intended) seem to use them.. TLD's are nice, but tend to be a bit big and heavy.. the Charter is a good size for all round fishing (for the mid-big guys)
  6. I would go the lever for a couple of reasons - level drags are also good if you have people fishing with you who pick up your rod.. Its easy for them to set the drag right and takes the guess work out - I can see where my drag is set visually, rather than having to pull line during a fight or moving to the rod on a boat - Strike is always set right when trolling - Drag system is better ( see other posts on the how and why's) - I have had star drags "unwind" on my in a fight a little In the end i guess it comes to price, I have star and Lever drag systems, both do work well, but i do prefer the levers. good luck

    Wat To Do

Agrred, but you can also get a lock for the pin in the removable towball as well. that way they have to take the car and the trailer.. but thats another problem I guess I find the hitchlock is also a good idea as it keeps the hitch on the ball all the time (my trailer used to jump a bit) as well as provide some security
  8. I used to have the same problem, but was using normal snapper leads.. A mate of mine started me using those leads that are shaped like a Pyrmaid.. and they hold bottom a heap better. I gotta admit, I have and prefer the boat.. but sometimes it nice just to go out for a spin without the hassles of towing, cleaning etc etc.. I am also debating that as well, (A lot of thinking happened on the 6 hour drive!!!) gotta admit i was a bit unprepared on this trip (left torch in car, had mobile in pocket so couldn't wade out etc etc).. will probably go the 10Kg anyway as it gives me a bit more "go" on some of my snapper reef's... but will try casting with the leader as you suggested. (do you think about a metre should do it? or can I go shorter??)
  9. Went out of Coffs to catch up with some mates and do some fishing.. Here is a rundown of what happened Saturday Morning Went out on Charter and went out to the Fad, where there was a small school of Dolphin fish running around about a metre mark Tried Yakka's, strips and cubed baits, jigg's.. they just wern't biting. headed back to the lighthouse for a shot at the kingies.. Everyone fished bait, I just fished livies. My livie goes nuts and the blokes rod next to me buckles over.. A jewie about a metre and a half comes up to the boat (I was robbed I tell ya!!) A few kingies and "fuselleers" come up to the boat and everyone is hitting into them with strip baits. I still hold onto my Livie.. waiting for the big one.. still waiting.. waiting.. livies goes a bit nuts.. but nothing hits it.. All day and not one fish to me!!! but that's fishin I guess. Saturday Night Head back to shore and have a power kip and find myself on a beach (about three beaches north of the harbour), spinning those big soft plastic Stom shad things.. Bait was working in close and i was just jigging it though them slowly. I would take a cast, jig back.. walk twenty metres up the beach.. then cast again.. jig back..then another twenty paces. ened up doing a few laps of the beach (bait was everywherre) at about twenty to nine (been jigging for around 3 hours now) I feel a slight bump... Still asleep, I look down to wonder why the reel isn't turning anymore.. then all hell breaks loose. The Jewie takes a long run out to sea and then starts arcing back and forth.. everytime i got him close, out he would go again. it wasn;t a fast run like a kingie, more of a mid paced charge.. like being attached to a bulldozer.. but faster than a shark the thing that really got me was the headshakes.. not a rat-a-tat like you get on smaller fish, but you could actually feel the head moving back and forth. Ten minutes later he is close, but I had left my torch in the car and was having difficulty trying to see him or the angle of my line There was a deep gutter right on the edge of the beach and he was holding in that, running up and down ( i had covered an area of around 50 metres two or three times by this stage) All of a sudden, line snaps and he is gone. ( I think he was trying to rub my line against the top of the gutter and he won) Only thing your could hear was my knees knocking... In hindsight...I don't really think I got any control on that fish with 8Kg line, He wanted to get into that gutter and when i cam close to getting him up and over. he would just put it in low gear and drag me back in. I am going to up it to 10Kg now and hope my casting distance doesn't go down too much. I'm addicted to this jewfishing thing now, am gunna start going down to the northern beaches after dark for a few hours of spinning I think. Sunday Morning Next day, I drove onto Boambee beach for a fish, the wind was up and there was heaps of weed in the water. Found a dead snapper on the sand, he must have been nearly 60-70cm's.. not sure what killed him, but its good to see fish that size are out there!! Wind proved too much, so went out to the creek for a chance at a flattie and a bream. Got nothing so decided that the meat tray in the fishermanc club had better odds. Sunday afternoon Bought 10 tickets and won a tray of prawns, a tray of chicken and a ham. Took prawns down to the Co-op and ate them whilst beurlied them up for some trev's. there were a coupld of 1Kg models there (fun on bream gear) but it got emotional with a 2Kg+ model started swimming around. Didn''t do as well as expected in the end so packed up and drove home. Spent the next six hours driving comtemplating my next Jewfish spin session!!! (I'm well and truley hooked now!!) Cant wait for the next weekend!!!
  10. off to coff's to catxch up with a few mates and go out on a charter sat Sun will be recovery and the big drive back
  11. A ten year old loomis (GL2 or IM6..am not sure what blank) with a shimano Triton III (I think thats what its called).. loaded with 6-8Kg mono (never worked well with Braid) SHe has caught everything from a 23Kg Jew and two small marlin. (100 and 130Kg) yet is light enough to use on bream in the river if I haven't taken another rod with me (I change the reel though) She is a bit old and tired now, but has never let me down.. if it was legal.. I would marry her
  12. Mate I think Red might still have a Shimano T-Curve Jig rod for sale.. I just picked one up from him and it was in top nic.. Check out in the tackle swap/sell section and you will see his add. its under the topic "Shimano Tld 25 And T-curve Rod For Sale" Cheers
  13. 1. How many jewies would you catch in a year (i.e. <1, 10, 50, 100!!??) - include all kept and released fish ? 6-10 2. What $ value would you outlay to catch an average size jewie (say 4-5 kg). Include in your answer the total cost you would outlay for a trip to target jews specifically (i.e. beer , bait, tackle, boat fuel etc)? As a guide this answer would typically be in the range of $20 - $100). Maybe im spending too much compared to other people, but $ 150- 200 would be resonable i recon.. (Fuel + Tackle $60, beer $50, bait $20, food $20) if on a charter, then closer to $200 (or more sometimes, if its a specific charter) 3. What $ value would you put on the experience of catching an average sized jew (i.e. aesthetic value). Try comparing the enjoyment you get out of it with the enjoyment you may get from a night on the drink that cost you $100 (Dont inflate this one too much)? Big Jew ; $ 200-$ 300 Small-med jew: $ 100 Hairtail: 1 Million $'s (sorry couldn't help myself) 4. If there were more jews in a system (i.e. stocking jewfish resulted in better catch rates), would you go fishing more for them. This is especially relevant for those who fish for the fun of it but release their catch? I would target them more specifically. 5. How many nights a year would specifically go fishing to target jewfish? One one this year , but in the past years around 5-8 nights
  14. Well thats 45cm of fish more than i got!!!!! at least it was a nice day out there.. (pity about the wind)

    Seasickness

and the winner is.... JEWMAN70!!!! Just an update on the situation or those not willing to read the thread.. I recently posted a topic about seasickness as my mate gets crook at just the sight of water.. Now admitabily...testing is still young, but we have gone out a few times now and tried the Beef Jerkey trick.. (had tried travelcalm, tablets before and he wouldn't hold steady enough to give him a needle etc etc) So far.. (touch wood), he has been fine and not gotten crook.. Any other out there want to give it a try and submit your results?? Perhaps we should patient this idea and make a few $'s to fund research on my next question..
  16. yeah, running if the green and red with a stern light and anchored is an all round white light. but these guys were fanging around like there was no tomorrow.. maybe they just have better eyes than me.. but no-one on my boat could see them ( 8 eyes cant all be wrong!!!) Clutch: Eleanor Bluffs...that sounds about right..lets go with that!!! P.s forgot to mention, i also went for a quick troll around joey around 11:00 and got nothing either (trolling rapala magnum's for not a sniff) Cheers
  17. Went out for my first "Jew Hunt" on Saturday and didn't do any good.. (Stayed inside as im "allergic" to wind) Was an interesting trip nevertheless, with a 35 foot sailboat snapping its mast right next to me (it hit the Navmarker pole in Pitwater and did "the Twist") after helping out with this, I then found a few kids drifting out to sea near flint and steel... their laser had capsized and they couldn't get the rigging off. There was another boat there to assist.. But where were the organisers of the sailing group?? ( kids were only about 8-10) and why were they out in the bay when a coastal wind warning was issued the day before..?? (found out later, they had started out from Brooklen, so not sure why they were out in Flint and steel...it wasn't as if you couldnt notice the wind hammering in!!!) anyway back to the fishin Sat off the point directly opposite Juno (dont know the name of the point sorry) with live yellowtail, garies, soft plasitcs, butterflied garies.. infact, there were so many hooks in the water, if a jewie swam by, I was sure we would have foul hooked him!!! Spent most of the night there without a sniff.(not even pickers) though did see some interesting things showing up on the sounder (possibly simulation mode??) Now, I am not sure if this is weird or not, but considering nothing happened.. I think i am hooked on this Jewie chasin thing. I'm off to Coffs this weekend for a fish, but will be out there again the following weekend to see what I can do, this time.. I might study the charts and find somewhere a little less populated.. (not sure if it was people getting out of the wind, or if it looked like were were catchin them, cause it got pretty crowded around us for a while) P.s whats the go with Nav lights these days.. I heard and saw (just in the darkness) 4 boats going flat chat without a single light during my time there...it was a pretty dark night too, so I dont know what they were thinking ( normally I only see one idiot out there, but there seemed to be a few the night)...Me thinks an accident is pending....
  18. bet ya i know what the next topic of "Show and tell" at school will be!!! Always good to see big healthy fish like that being taken on the doorstep of the city!! Good work, Top shelf!!!

    Fresh Bait

Hey Raiders.. Lately I have been going out in broken bay and picking up the mandatory block of pilchards from the servo on the way out just in case I cant get any livies (I trundle down Ryde/mona vale road and launch at Bayview) Normally the only guys open are the Servo's and their bait has been woeful (Mushy rubbish) does anyone know anywhere in this region (North Ryde --> Bayview) that is open late or early that does sell quality bait.. or is there somewhere I should go to stock up? (I have heard of a good place up near Peats ridge but not 100% sure where it is I guess I could always just get better at catching squid.. Cheers
  20. Thanks for that, I have seen a few guys get hit hard at flint and steel, but agree that it doe's get a bit quiet. I'll give Juno a go and see what happens Cheers
  21. I'm going out for a run tomorrow.. trying to see if there are any jewies sitting around flint and steel or Juno. Have never targeted them before, but it looks like there might be a few around.

    Pumping Bait

On a lower part of the tide, we used to se little bumps in the sand in the dryer sand.. each bump was a pippi... Generally if you walk in the water, do the twist and get nothing, then move 40 metres down the beach and repeat... hawkes nest beach is loaded with them. Cant help you with the worms I am afraid.. they are just too quick for me!!!
  23. The squid hit the Yakka's
  24. I just use a squid jig.. small one about 10cms long (bout the length of a box of cigerettes) I like finding a long bay that ends with sandflats and weed beds.. seems o do the trick.. but I think the others might have more succeess on them than i do ( I only seem to catch them consistently in summer..
