  1. Went out again off Cronulla beach yesterday afternoon/evening. Thought I would try a different approach and try to catch some beach worms to use for a Jew bait. Dragged my stink bait around for an hour and a half and didn't spot any worms popping up. Luckily however, I did catch some pipis and was hoping to use them to catch something I could use as bait for the Jews. No luck with that either catching anything suitable. Just as I thought all was lost, a very kind bloke turns up next to me and lends me some fresh squid. I considered this a good sign of things to come as he was a regular to catching Jews and suggested we were in for a good shot. Sadly, things just didn't happen as the script would suggest. The only saving grace was a monster salmon I caught about 1030pm when we were packing up. I reckon it would have been around 3kg. Oh well back to the drawing board, I think I'm up to plan R now. I'll let you know how that goes.
  2. Love your confidence mate, Good luck with it. Looking forward to hearing a successful report.
  3. Dead set cracker well done!
  4. Hi Quochuy,That's interesting that you didn't even get a bite. I was fishing down there a couple of evening's ago and 2 different guys both did well on Bream and Whiting using live beach worms. I'm thinking of focussing on using worms for Jew bait. I think your pressure suspect May be on the money. Although I have spent a lot of time reading about moon phases, barometer pressure and ranges of tides and keep coming back to the same conclusion - fish must eat and surely they don't sit around waiting for all these perfect conditions to line up before they will commit to a feed.
  5. Thanks for you reply Gary, it was Wanda beach. I do my best to spot an appropriate gutter but due to my lack of success, you're probably right in that I'm obviously not picking the right ones. Having said that, over many outings I have studied the beach closely and tried most types of gutters - parallel, adjacent etc. The Tailor was too big to use whole. The head and guts weighed a lot by its self and was hard enough to get a good cast out to the gutter. I think live beach worms are about the only bait I haven't tried. This may be the answer.
  6. Hi guys, went out last night in pursuit of that elusive Jewie. No luck again with the Jew but managed a fairly large Salmon. Conditions were ok and my plan to catch a Tailor for bait worked perfectly. I used the Tailor head with guts hanging out and launched it into a nice gutter. I was convinced something would take it and run even if the Jew weren't around. I'm starting to realise that even if I have spent many long hours off the beach for no Jew, it means nothing and I am no closer to that first capture. I guess the Jew don't know how much time I have invested so each time I go I'm treating it as if it is my first outing. That way there is less disappointment when I return Jewless. The Salmon was caught on a pillie and is in the fridge for dinner tonight. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to cook it? Preferably on the BBQ. Thanks - sorry no Jew report
  7. Hi guys, I'm heading out again in search of that first Jewie off the sand over the next few nights. Just wondering if anyone has any recent news or heard of any action taking place off sydney beaches? The plan this time around is to catch some tailor and use a fresh slab bait. Mind you, I have tried this approach many times before but I'm still hopeful that one day the plan will all come together. Any thoughts or advice that might help me get one over the line? Thanks, Nath
  8. Thanks for your help mate
  9. G'day fellas, A friend of mine is heading up to Manning Point shortly to chase that elusive Jew. I would go with him but having dropped $400 at the casino recently, the might have a problem with me going away again. Has anyone got any news from up that way recently? any tips or local knowledge of the area would be much appreciated. Especially where to capture some bait. I believe he is taking a tinny up but may also look at a night off the sand. Thanks, Nath
  10. Fished Narrawallee beach Friday night. One keeper bream and then a half hour battle with a 1metre shark. Got it to the shore before the usual happend. Snap! The most bizarre part was I was using 2kg line! I was patient but it must have been hooked right in the corner of the mouth. Second night at Mollymook was very disappointing. We found a gutter which looked absolutely perfect. Deep water, white foamy cover, live pipis. Result was zilch. I still can't work it out. High tide on dusk too. Anyway if anyone has done well down there recently I would be keen to find out what I did wrong.
  11. Hi guys, I'm heading down to Narrawallee Beach near Mollymook with the family in a couple of weeks. Would love for someone who knows the area to point me in the right direction. I have the Mrs and baby so I'll be just keeping it simple. I would like to target the usual bread and butter fish off the beach I guess. Is there any bait available to catch or will I need to buy some? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  12. Yeah I caught a similar Bream this afternoon on lure but can't work out how to attach the photo from my iPhone. Dam it!

    Off Sydney

Thanks mate will do. Keep it simple sounds the best way. Nath
  14. Yeah good question let me know when you work it out
  15. Hi everyone, Long time no post. Went out on a charter off Sydney last weekend. The action was pretty steady all day with about 10 of us all getting a nice fish or 2. Probably every half hr someone landed a nice fish. Mainly Mowong, sweep, nanygai and a few good snapper. Oh yeah and heaps of pike. I was keen to cut one up for bait but the charter operator reckons they stink too much so that was that. Interested to hear your thoughts on that. Towards the end I was lucky enough to catch this awesome fish (see attached, hopefully it worked). The charter operator reckons it's a Pearl Perch and top eating! He was trying to get me to hand it over all the way back to the dock. To be honest I thought it was a Moses Snapper. Either way it was a bout 45cm long and probably weighed a couple of kilos. Caught it on a strip of squid. I've frozen it because I'm hoping you guys will have some suggestions on the best way to cook it. I want to do it justice. I has to be the best quality fish I've ever caught so I was pretty wrapped with that. Regards, Nathan
  16. Was wondering how you guys would rank Sydney's estuary's in a general sense. It obviously depends on what you're targeting and where you normally fish but if you had to fish 1 river what would it be. I'm from around the George's but my order would be. 1 Hawesbury 2 George's 3 Hacking 4 Sydney Harbour What are your thoughts? Nathan
  17. Great stuff, what a rewarding session. Well Done
  18. Sounds familar, I tried for years in the Georges and eventually gave up as the poddies just won't trap. Try a different system. The Hacking worked first time for me. Good luck with the little blighters! Nath
  19. Awsome fish, that thing's a horse! I bet it was a bugger to hold onto. Well done
  20. Hi guys, haven't posted for a while but I still keep an eye on all things Jew. One thing that has puzzled me for years are the habbits of Jewfish. I'm talking solely about Jews in the surf and in particular around Sydney beaches. It sounds strange but if I just pretend to be a Jewy for a day, would it go something like this. Spend all day out near some structure, ie a reef at the beach headland. Then as the sun gets low in the sky, I set out to find some food. Now does this mean I start at say the North end of a beach and scower every gutter along the beach for a fresh feed of what ever as I head South or do I already know where the bait is from previous nights and head straight to that particular gutter and sit and ambush my prey. What I'm getting at here is if I'm fishing a particular gutter on a beach, will a Jew likely be passing at some stage or will he bi pass my gutter in search for his resident gutter. In other words, is there a small window of oppoutunity where the fish will pass your bait at some point in the night or tide cycle or is it the case of fishing the right gutter at the right time. I hope this make sense because I'm starting to confuse myself now. Thanks Nathan

    Xmas Jew

Thanks Dave, I certainly appreciate the beach is very difficult to hook a Jew. You see the trouble is, it's become personal with this fish. After countless hrs off the sand it has come to a point where it has to be this way and anything less would not cut the mustard. I feel I deserve a run and I only hope that luck is on my side when I tackle it again. Nath

    Xmas Jew

G'day all, long time no post. Some of you guys might remember me as the fisherman that was nearly sent around the bend by our old friend the Mulloway. Been in the Uk for 2 years now so kind of lost touch with the latest Jew news. However I'm coming home for xmas and am desperate to give it a couple of goes while i'm there. If you remember I target Jewies at Cronulla/Wanda/Greenhills so basically I'm just after any news from that area recently. Has anything changed? has anyone had any luck there recently? What are the gutters like these days? Any bait in the area? I figure if I start my research now, then by Dec I'll be back in shape ready for that elusive first. I'm only back for a month so when I do go, I want to pick the peek times to give myself the best chance. Thanks anyone. Nath
  23. Hehehe! couldn't agree more with you Langa Also it tends to cause a few fights with when you come home angry and empty handed again.
  24. Good luck mate that's all I can say. I reckon you might have alot of loney nights ahead of you though. Nath
