Hi all, Going out on the harbour tomorrow morning. Planning to launch from roseville around 545am. I'm a bit undecided as to what my plan will be for the day. Should i try for squid? Or yakkas or slimies at sow and pigs maybe? Then my next spot is my biggest question. I've heard of Kings around seaforth, are they worth targetting or should i stay in the main harbour and try for a Jewie or John Dory around clarke/shark island or north harbour around fairlight? Was thinking maybe have a troll around the heads at some point for maybe salmon or anything else hanging around... Any ideas are appreciated. Cheers Josh

Hi mate, We stay at cottage pt a few times a year and have gotten to know the area well. Are you going to have a boat at all? If you do i would definitely recommend going outside coal and candle as from the shore you are a bit restricted. Try Waratah Bay, Jerusalem and other deep water spots for hairtail and john dory and livies. Try Yeomans bay for John Dory and possibly Hairtail, you should be able to get yakkas in coal and candle maybe around akuna bay. Akuna Bay also has some thumper bream hanging around the marina. Right at the end of the mechanics boat shed place, it is quite narrow and they don't like you fishing there so try it when nobody is around, we tried it at dusk floating bread in a bread burley trail and boy those fish are smart, they know exactly where the hooked pieces are. Any hint as to roughly where you were? Looks like either around Sugarloaf Bay or well upstream. Nice result anyway. The jew theory probably sounds most likely about the whiting.

I've been surfing online stores recently as well. I saw that line, looks like pretty good stuff. I also found this The Shimano Sephia I'm not entirely sure about its relation to the fireblood whether its totally different or same thing with another name. Anyone else got more info on it......I'm thinking i may get one

Thanks guys. It really was a great holiday and i'd recommend anyone who gets the chance to go there to take it. We're certain that we'll be heading back in a few years or so but next on the list is probably the Bay of Islands, NZ. Hopefully rip into some serious snapper and kingies. Cheers Josh

Hole-y crap that is funny

Hi Flatty Hunter, For yakkas you can get them at West or Barrenjoey Head without to much hassle. For the Dory you then want to find a spot that has a deepish hole or around reef/structure that would attract them to the area. Before you send the yakka down though, trim the tail fins back just a little bit so that it doesn't kill the yakka but rather slow him down making him easier prey for a slow moving fish like the john dory. Another trick is to sent your rig down to the bottom (baitless) set at the depth you want and then retrieve the line by hand, pin the yakka and drop it back over the side. This way you know you're bait will be at the right depth and the yakka won't trick you depthwise on the way down. Cheers Josh

Hi All, Just come back from a great trip in Maui, Hawaii. We did 3 charters whilst over there 2 on the same boat which were awesome and the other was not very good. Details of the Trips Our first trip was great, Skipper Patrick and deckie Brandon had been out since midnight catching the live bait for us!! and myself, brother and step dad left Lahaina Harbour at 330am to head 36 miles out! to the far FADS. Nearly 2 hours later we reach the first FAD and out goes a dead mackeral bait and within seconds line in screaming off the TLD 50, I take the rod and have a nice battle with my first dolphin fish, brought on board and is the biggest one of the trip weighing 20lb and about 1.2-1.3m long. We managed 4 dollies at that first FAD and with the sight of some pilot whales arriving and bite slowing we decided to head off to the next FAD. It was at this point where I start verbally emptying the contents of my stomach into the toilet which is the first ever time I’ve experienced motion sickness from previously believing I had a stomach of steel, perhaps to blame were the facts I was recovering from glandular fever, had just come off a 10 hour plane ride 15hours prior to waking up at 2am to go fishing and I sat inside on the way out.... Anyway we scored 2 more dollies at the 2nd FAD and none at the third so we trolled our way back in and I managed my first Wahoo weighing 20lb and being 1.2-1.3m in length. The 2nd trip was a more inshore trip only heading a few miles out from the harbour, we had to catch our own live bait=1 mackeral compared to 20 caught for us and the boat wasn't driven any faster than 11knots the whole trip which was disappointing. The determination shown on the first trip was clearly not evident as my step dad caught a bluefin trevally and I got busted off by a shark... Our final trip was out with the Capt. Patrick again and deckie Steve, Much longer trip this time heading around the island to the other side of it which was a solid 3 hour trip but rougher swell forced us to go slower going out. This time it was my step dad who as a neurosurgeon is the calmest most level-headed person I know who everyone thought had the most solid stomach of steel until after about an hour and a half experienced his first bout of motion sickness. We just fished the one FAD this time and managed 7 dollies from it all average of about 12-15lb. Trolled back again and I managed my 2nd Wahoo and the best fish of all trips weighing 22lb (looking a lot heavier) and measuring 1.3m give or take a few cm. Overall we had a great time and are planning to head back to Maui in the future. Here are some of the pics. My PB Wahoo Us with Capt. We were told to use premium in our Optimax by the dealer, can't imagine why it would be bad for it. It improves performance of my grandpa's 20year old merc but does cost that bit extra.

Hi NZ, As most people have said both are good reels that are pretty similar in terms of features and price. Just go with what you think seems best to you and what you're going to be using it for. I like both brands and currently have a Daiwa Exceller Plus which is like the next model down from Tierra, and find it quite nice to use and seems well worth its price (depending where you get it) as should any reel. I'm looking to upgrade within the next few months as well and will probably stick with Daiwa, maybe an advantage or sol. Cheers Josh ps-sent you a pm also.

Theres TOO MANY nudist beaches in the harbour, most of the little ones you pull up to seem to have a whole brigade of them. For squid you can try neilsen park next to rose bay and the kelp around ajacent rocks.

Mate it cant hurt to try if you're normal methods are working then you're gonna have to try something different.

Hi guys, Currently in Maui, Hawaii and today went out on our first of 3 charters this week. We landed 6 mahi mahi and a wahoo to 25lbs with most fish around 1.2m. Unfortunately always thinking i had a stomach of steel came back to haunt me today and i hurled my guts up for the first time ever!!!!-Not pleasant and not happy, fishing the morning after 11 hours of flying and not much if any sleep probably contributed. Will upload photos, more detail and info of the trips when back in Sydney probably next Monday. Cheers Josh

Thats some really nice gear there, hopefully i can get my hands on some of that....one day. Working out some of those prices in AUD they're like $400 cheaper on the Blue Heaven Ocean Jig Reel. Seems like a great place.

Guys, I will be in Hawaii when the origin is on unforunately and with the time difference i will actually be out fishing at that stage. I'll have my laptop (presumably internet) and my mobile (hopefully reception), and was wondering if anybody knew if it is possible for me to find the game and then watch it when i get back a few hours after it finishes. Same with the Wallabies game tomorrow...... Also do you think either would be broadcast after they've finished on cable?? ESPN maybe... Any help is appreciated. Cheers Josh
