  1. As a kid 35 ? years ago.   Fishing in the bay with my parents tailor seemed to make up the vast majority of our catch.   They did seem more plentiful than now especially considering the bay was commercially fished as well.

  2. I’d be stoked to have a weekend like that.   Awesome.

If I was there I would of been tempted to try Sandbar beach at Smith Lake as they opened up the lake towards the end of last week.

Just south of Broome Barn hill station. Arrived yesterday afternoon had a fish off the shore caught about a dozen under size reef fish plus two good bream. They will do for dinner tonight

The bream appear to be a variation on our normal yellow fin bream. Try again this arvo.

    Was a nice sunset

That sure is a long way for a Bream.   Broome has been on my wish list for ages, I’m looking forward to more reports.

On second look it looks more like a Tarwhine.   Did it have black stomach lining?

I just checked it doesn’t look like Tarwhine extend so far north in WA

  4. Mate I’m not sure of the actual costs but if your wife insists on new how can you argue with that!

Most boats are lucky to get used a couple of times a month so don’t worry about that.

I wouldn’t skimp on horsepower though and would much rather a second hand motor near the max rating if the boat than a smaller new one.

I am looking to purchase a new VHF radio for my 4.55m Quintrex to replace an old 27 meg one. Required for close inshore work only - up to 3km offshore. Any suggestions as to brands and models I should be looking at (or avoiding!). I note that some have the controls on the face of the unit itself and others (a bit more expensive) have them all on the microphone. Advantages/disadvantages of each?

What length aerial will I need?

The higher you can get the aerial the better.

For VHF you should do the licence course.   If you contact Marine Rescue or look on their website, you could go the 1 day course first and it will give you a better idea of what features you may like.

If you think you want the DSC function I’d be checking what’s compatable with your current electronics.

Some follow ups from Anton this evening:

    • Hot water is number one priority
    • type of water (bay/shore) is important
    • Type of ray if you can identify it

Furthermore, if the swelling increases on day 2 don't discount it. He is staying in for observation and waiting on news if they want to do some surgery on barb fragments and some necrotic skin (I'm going to have to look that up - just did - disturbing).

On a positive note he has so much more respect for stingrays (I'm having a flashback to the Modern Family episode filmed in Oz) and he liked the Shimano Waxwings I showed him so much he has bought two of them. Wonder if I can convince Shimano to re-release that product line. Found them in a store recently and cleared 7 of them off the shelf.

To those more observant people among us see if you can work out which foot was afflicted?Resized_20180527_174839_6878.thumb.jpg.b963f0ec6160590419ad9d2528f7804b.jpg

    Nope can’t pick it! :P

I was fishing with a mate on our boat when we caught a ray.   He had it on the deck removing the hook.   It looked like it was cooperating and all of a sudden doubled over and whack it hit him in the back of the hand.   It went through an artery so was pumping blood, each squirt going a few metres.   Needless to say a trip to hospital shortly followed.

Check your parts diagram. If your Stradic has a spool bush, located on the spool shaft, you can change that to a bearing quite easily. It virtually upgrades your Stradic to the same spec as a Sustain.

I've used this mob's bearings before and they're good value for money. If you can manage, measure it and order an extra line roller bearing. They tend to wear out faster than the rest.

If you put the part number off the diagram into eBay the corrrect bearing will pop up.   Measure to check.

    Hi Connico.

Had a great day weatherwise between the rocks and the pier using tubeworms, pilly cubes, prawns and mullet strips but nothing biting.

Will definitely be going back as it's a promising spot.

    Many thanks for the tips.

It might be worth throwing a squid jig out if nothing else is doing.   Was there any ink stains on the wharf?

All worth a go, particularly the last one! ?

The pick up is a filtered bilge pump inlet, not a scoop.

I know the one you mean.   I had that and didn’t like it running dry underway. So I used an irrigation fitting with mesh in it as a filter for the pick up,  sometimes it clogged up now I have en extra bit of mesh on the outside of the pickup.   Three Johnson pumps later including the faulty one that sprayed out of the housing I switched to a rule pump and had no further problems to date.

I So need to learn how to target squid, the only time I catch them is when with a mate and the squid are prolific, otherwise I never find them or know which colour Jig to use.

I started to improve when I decided to dedicate whole trips to catching squid.

Don’t get to caught up in colours just get a few jigs in the zone and see what happens.   Switch jigs and/or move spots if it isn’t happening.

Actually, that got me thinking. First approach might be to go fishing! Don’t use the tank and see if the bilge pump still kicks in. If it doesn’t, it’s the tank, pump or fittings. ? Anyway, something to worry about for another day. I’m going to try the Indian Ocean next week! Maybe I’ll get my big red over there!

Depending on the live bait tank pick up you might have to block it off if water pushes through under way.  Also maybe it is getting more water than it can handle whilst underway.

Id be doing a bit of everything filling up the bilge as Rick suggested. Rigging up the livebait tank to pump at home and watching the tank pump and fittings.

Maybe go out and put a little grease or something on the bung washers to make sure they are doing up tight.   Check the bung plug housing and fittings are sealed.

Whatever it is you are going to have to keep getting out until the esky is full of snapper, just to be sure.
