Kept the belly flaps from dolphin fish I caught also makes good strip bait for offshore bottom bouncing
I’m regretting binning mine last week now. The bait freezer is full and needs a defrost.

Great catch mate. What were you using for bait.

Lifejackets are required. But it is recommended that all must be outside of cabin except for the master
Thanks. I know that in a bar situation, our conversation wasn’t yesterday wasn’t about bar crossings though.

It was around 7.30am I believe. Though lifejackets are highly recommended it's doubtfull one would of saved her, infact the last fatality's I remember here were from the same area when two me drowned in the boat cabin after their overturned and the self inflating caused them to get trapped in the cab.
At the course yesterday there was some talk about how quick the press are to jump to point to the absence of lifejackets even when the are not legally required. The danger of been caught in an upturned half cabin wearing a life jacket.
It is really sad sad when kids get caught up in these tradgedies. Going by the time you say it would of been near the end of the run out.

Very, very sad. A poor girl has lost her life and a lifetime of regret for everyone else involved.
I wonder what time this happened I was doing the SROCP course at Cronulla. We went into the radio room after and the only thing mentioned at that stage was a car swimming at Foreshore ramp.

Congrats on your first dolly! They can be frustrating at times and don’t they go beserk when they hit the deck! Enjoy!
Cheers scratchie!!!
Thanks Scratchie,. Especially the first one the smallest he came in very quick and then went ballistic making a huge mess in the boat.

We had a couple of cracks at them last year and landed some but I hadn’t. This was the first time this year.
We were using livies my mate had 15lb leader two hooks rig on a 4000 size reel and I had 30lb single hook on 6000 size. I think I will go to the lighter set up next time. Any thoughts on two hook rig or one?
This weekend will be a no go for me I’m doing the vhf course on Saturday and kids sport Sunday.

Nice feed. It looks like that other rod in the back ground is hooked up when the pic was taken? What depth were you fishing?

Mullet are usually found in shallow water, over sand banks, though at times I have caught them near the surface of deeper water.
Bread for burley and bread for bait. A few small pieces that float along in the current will bring them on the bite, also a small piece of bread that is mashed up and thrown out to slowly sink. Floating bread crusts will also attract bream and garfish (very occasionally a blackfish). Floating bread also attracts *&#@*#* seagulls, that will swoop down to eat the bread and scare off the mullet.
I use half a piece of fresh bread in the hand, dip it into the water for a second then squeeze out some water. Squeeze out a lot of water and the bread becomes a bit doughy, squeeze out less water and the bread is a bit softer. Mould a piece of a size less than a 5 cent piece - size 8 or 10 hook - and lob it out near the floating bread burley - hard to throw it against any wind, but you can use a small bubble float to gain distance. The best idea is to anchor or fish up wind so that the wind can assist with casting.
Mullet will also eat squirt worms, small pieces of prawn, dough made from flour.
Thank you

Awesome getting straight into the fish like that! Good times

As read the title and I knew you had a bag of fish regardless. You must be the most consistent Hacking fisho around. Well done.
Do you have any tips for catching mullet?

Hey guys,
Quick update, I had another mate who knows a lot about boats check it with a battery and fuel and fired up pretty damn quick. He was more than happy with it especially for $4,500 so I grabbed it and it's now in my driveway ready for a clean!
Just wanted to thank everyone for your input and advice it was a huge help!
Thanks!
Well done mate enjoy.

Perfect combo catching fish and paying out on mates with a top feed in the bag. It doesn’t get much better.

Persistence paid off well. Those gars sure are a good bait.

What a great weekend it turned out to be. Saturday my daughter won her Baseball grand final. A few celebratory drinks on Saturday night and me free to fish on Sunday.
After seeing a few positive reports during the week we had the Hacking Fad in mind. As usual during the week we watched the forecasts and hoped it would work out.
Sunday arrives and we launch around 6 and off to collect some bait. First spot was dead. Try another spot and we had 20 bait size yakkas in good time.
Whilst collecting them the wind really picked up leaving us in some doubt our plan would work soon enough it backed off again ? . We started to head out, the conditions were being nicer to us than we expected allowing mid 30km speeds on the way out. Happy days!
On arrival the place was a carpark with at least 10 boats around. Weekend fishing
. We joined the crowd and...... nothing doing.
The crowd started to thin out to just a few boats and shortly after we both got hits with Steve hooking up and landing his first in the mid 60s. After a few clumsy attempts with the net we had one in the boat.
With renewed enthusiasm we started a new drift and a few minutes later Steve’s drag is singing again with a much better fish. Using all its tricks jumping, pulling side on into the current, down deep these dollies are really good sport. After a longer battle his mid 80s fish is in the boat. Yep the gaff is heaps easier than net. Surely I’m due I am thinking.
Another drift and what would you know Steve is on again. This fish pulling harder than the last. I’d say this tussle went on for around 10 minutes. This fish went close to 90cm. The wind was picking up, surely I’m not going home on a duck.
We made the call for two more drifts before heading back. The wind was really pushing our drift along noticably faster with the next drift producing nothing.
Last drift last chance. Livies out and off we go. Shortly after my drag starts screaming, set the hook and the battle begins. After a tense few moments I had my first Dolphin fish in the boat. Yippee! These fish are awesome fun. This fish around 87 on the lie detector.
The trip back in was much slower but so worth it.

That is a great way of filleting. I normally leave the skin attached at the tail and then flip it over and run my knife back which can be a bit fiddly. That looks much easier. Thanks Heaps. Chats R&B
That works for me.
This one looks legendary but I butchered it. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=1953377061579944&id=1558573467726974

Well, now it’s my FFS... Fallback Flatty Spot! My son only eats flathead (although he tried kingfish the other day and said he’d eat it again), so I’ll be stopping there a bit more often in future. I should have figured there’d be flathead hanging around under the pens to feed on scraps from the kingfish pellets. Some of them were nice and fat! I’m not sure I’ve ever caught my bag limit on a species before (since bag limits came in at least). Now I have 2 trips in a row... kings on Monday and flathead yesterday! ? I love Port Stephens!
I think I need to move.

Nice feed of flatties.
I use this method to fillet them. Works good for me. I have seen some methods that take the rib bones out in one crack but I can’t get it to work.

Awesome day out. Great you took the wife out too. Were you using yakkas or slimies?
-
It looks like a very tidy boat and a good first boat if it all checks out.
I have never seen that snorkel set up for the anchor.

Im in. Jason on footytips.

Cracking fish on light gear. That would of been heaps of fun. Well done.
