Hi all,
This is a late report, but thought i'd still share...
I was in the states last July on a holiday visiting the inlaws.. I have this thing where I HAVE TO fish wherever I go around the world, so the first thing I did after leaving the airport was book a fishing charter.
The Mrs' family aren't into fishing, and had never fished before... It took some convincing, but I managed to get 8 of them to join me... Them having to fork out $100 and wake up at 3am seemed to be the problem...
During my stay, I was constantly visiting fishing shops and wholesalers to stock up on gear, as the dollar was awesome... While searching for tackle shops online, I came across a fishing competition that was coincidently on the same day i had booked the charter! As it wasn't cheap to enter the comp, I accepted the fact that the cousins weren't gonna fork out more money, so I just bought 1 ticket... (had to put the ticket in one of their names as you have to be a citizen to enter comps involving money...)
We head off at 4am to the first reef and hilariously, my wife and I are the only ones catching fish... We were landing flounder and gummy sharks... Needless to say everyone else was tired, bored and getting a little annoyed...
We move spots, and again we are the only ones pulling in fish... At this point it stopped being funny and I started feeling bad for them... I hooked another fish and I thought to myself "I'll bring this fish up, and the next one I hook, I'll pass the rod to someone else.."
At first it felt like I was snagged, then dead weight... I was convinced I had hooked some coral or a rock... I felt some tugs, then the fish went spastic... He realised he was hooked, and went nuts.... I called the skipper and told him to get the net or gaff.... I was playing the fish for some time, it became like a tug-of-war...
I started seeing some colour, then I hear the skipper screaming, "F**K its a salmon" and pushed one of the cousins out of his way onto the floor (serious)..
I brought it to the surface and as the net came within half a metre of the fish, to went for another run... I was freaken spewin as the target fish for the competition was salmon... I brought it to the surface again and another missed attempt at netting the fish... I was ready to throw the rod in the water and slap the skipper...
Third time lucky, and the fish was in the boat!! It weighed 29.9lb!!
I immediately rang the numebr on the competition ticket to ask where the weighing station was... I went and weighed it and was told to come back at 2pm for the presentation...
When we got back on the boat, the skipper approached me with some bad news... Apparently, there are wild salmon and hatchery salmon in the states. The hatchery salmon are bred and released into the ocean during the fishing seasons, and the wild ones are just that, wild... They differentiate between the two by one of the fins (it had a special name but i cant remember it)
Anyways, I had caught a wild salmon, and if i wanted to keep the fish, we couldnt drop another line in as it was illegal to continue fishing with a dead wild salmon on board...... If I was happy to release it, we could continue fishing...
We all agreed to keep it as I had a good chance of winning the comp.... At this point, I felt really bad ay... They couldn't care less about fishing, they paid 100 bucks each, woke up at 3am, didnt land a single fish, and now the 6 hour fishing trip was cut to 2.5 hours... spewin..
Anyways, to cut a long story short.... I won 1st place, 5 grand! $1300 automatically went to tax (they tax prize money there the ba$tards)... Split the remaining money by the 9 of us, so we each got 400 bucks, and tipped the skipper 100 bucks...
Then we went out and ate & drank our arses off!
Cheers,
Kiro
