  1. G’day Raiders,

A mate came down from Federal (near Byron Bay) for his Aunt’s funeral last week. I figured the least I could do was offer a fishing session to cheer him up!

I’m traditionally a bottom basher with very limited experience on sp’s but on this outing I was determined to persist. After reading so many successful raider reports on sp’s I was excited at the prospect of breaking my duck. So last Thursday morning we set off from the boat ramp at Georges River National Park (now with a new pontoon) at 6:30am.

We motored along to Tom Ugly’s Bridge and anchored with high expectations. We both started with the 3” minnows in nuclear chicken with 1/24 ounce jig heads. We flicked away for 30 mins or so resulting in zip. We moved onto the CC bridge repeating the process this time with the 3” minnow in pumpkin seed but with the heavier 1/8 ounce jig head instead. Zip.

By this stage Nick had given up and decided to use squid strips – I remained focussed as we tried our luck at Moulinex Point. Unfortunately neither of us had any enquiries. Our next stop was off Dolls Point where I was using the Lime Tiger shrimp and ¼ ounce jigs in search of bream or flathead (or any fish by this stage) only to be disappointed again.

It was great to be on the water again after a 3 month break and although I’m slightly disillusioned, I’ll continue to persevere with any tips thrown my way welcome.

How long did it take before you broke your sp duck?

    Cheers,

    Cam

  2. only a couple of other fisho's further around the rocks, myself, a gentle ocean and an arvo sea breeze, a pleasent way the spend the last hours of the day.

Great therapy Ray. I've got a visual of you in the yoga position on the rocks doing a couple of Hmmm.... Hmmmm ! :P

  3. I bought one as I got tired of busting large $10 plastic tubs from Bunnings. I find that it takes quite a while to fill up however, while it is, I wash the rest of the boat. I had to do some handy work on it though (and I'm no handyman) as it collapses as it fills up - particularly on sloping ground. By adding a strap that joins the two handles and placing that strap over the motor, it held the bucket up when filling. The strap had to be strong to hold all that water - I used a seat belt (my :wife: still hasn't noticed it missing from her car :1prop:)

Another unfortunate problem was that the end of the metal coil around the bottom rim decided to pop out - I had to find something in the shed to cap it.

It has been very useful in keeping water off the cover of my boat, by placing it upside down inside the boat proping up the cover. I have also used it at parties to fill it up with ice and drinks - it can hold a lot of cans!

Another positive is (or so I've been told) that if the pressure of water emitted is strong than the motors pump is performing well.

If I could use ear muffs I wouldn't have bothered purchasing it - but that's another story.

    Cheers,

  4. where is a good spot considering my boat is only 5.2 letres long, or is it best to stay home get pissed and watch the fireworks on tv

    Any help appreciated

Or somewhere in between.....you could mount a TV on your boat in the driveway...... :1prop:

  5. Mate, you've done half of the "Bay Run" with fishing gear in tow - no wonder you were tired! Maintain that enthusiasm (and energy) and it's bound to turn for the better. Maybe you’ve just invented a new Olympic sport ……Fishatholon? :biggrin2:

    Cheers,

    Cam

  6. I'd be happy with that result given the circumstances  . Like I always say to my wife "It's hard to get all the ducks to line up". You plan the w/e, book the mates, boats rarin', gears in good order, but your at the mercy of the mother nature!

Just wondering.....did you mix it up with any bottom bashing?

    Cheers,

  7. I have a 4.5m Stacer runabout (also 400kg) and it is powered by a 2 stroke 50hp Yamaha. My boat is rated to 60hp max. It does the job quite well with the 50 and gets up on a plane quite quickly with 2-3 people on board. Of course it takes a bit longer with 4-5 people. So I guess it's a question of how many people (consider weight) you may have on board regularly. Other considerations are:

    • are you thinking of towing anyone behind your boat;

    • where you will be doing most of your boating, eg some estuaries (or parts of) where you might not get to crank it up often;

    • and of course fuel economy.

    Hope that's of some help!

    Cheers,

    Cam

The reason's i went to aluminum is they only make the crusher in alloy.

2 This material suit's my way of life (low maintenance).

3 A little lighter to tow as a boat of the same size in glass would have also meant a car upgrade which was not in the budget.

4 I do believe that the chances of winning the lotto. Is slim or next to nothing,

so the berty on a mooring in a marina is properly out of the question. So all I should have to do with this one is a new donk every now and then and I will always have a good safe reliable boat at 1/3 its total replacement cost.

    Summary:

Glass is a lot more maintenance and as I have had glass boats before I know first hand how a small chip in the bottom of the boat that goes unrecognized for a period of time can cost big dollars to repair and when repaired leaves you a bit less confident in the boat

    Cheers

    Bob

Thanks Bob. Hearing different opinions/facts from different people including yours is valuble. I'm a maintenance free type of guy so can appreciate where your coming from! The more "spare time" you have at your disposal, the more you can :1fishing1:

    Cheers,

    Cam
