  1. G’day Raiders

After a short debate on wheather we should :fishing1: given that rain was predicted for yesterday morning, we headed out of Tunks Park armed with bait and SP’s. After reading Slinky’s articles on squidding and being inspired, I bought a Yo-Zuri squid jig which I put to work on a couple of spots including the Spit bridge. Unfortunately the eight legged buggers didn’t come out to play or I still have to serve my apprenticeship…. which I think is more likely.

We had a full squid out (bought) for a passing kingy while I flicked the plastics and the two mates were using bait. We tried a few spots in the main harbour including Sow of Pigs reef, Wedding Cake and Clifton Gardens. They caught plenty of undersized fish with a trevally going 27cm being the largest. I was getting the odd enquiry. The wind started to pick up so we decided to head back into MH seeking shelter.

At this point I was considering switching to bait but I persevered with SP’s. We found a sheltered spot, started a drift and after my third cast I felt a decent tug so I struck. It performed the odd head shake so I was thinking (hoping) Jewie…? It was taking line and it felt reasonably heavy so I started to think is the 4lb braid with 6lb leader sufficient? I played this fish for 3-4 minutes resisting the temptation to tighten the drag each time it ran. As it surfaced I couldn’t believe the size of the croc on the end of the line. I don’t think she liked the look of us as she made another attempt to escape. In the net she went – measured 71cm weighed 5.1lb caught with a 3” minnow in nuclear chicken. My PB for a flatty on SP …..and bait too actually. :biggrinthumb:

That was enough for the other two to change to SP’s. :1prop: Not long after they did, Skip lands a 57cm model flatty on a 4” pogy.

  2. I took the last week of the recent school holidays off for some FFR&R (fishing, family, rest & recreation) :1fishing1::beersmile: . We had booked a cabin at Soldiers Point for 3 nights / 4 days with friends who also have a boat. I have never been to Port Stephens before and was impressed by its beautiful waterways.

I wandered into the renowned tackle shop at Salamander Bay anxious to hear from the owner a few yarns about fishing in the area. Unfortunately he went to NQ on a fishing holiday! :( The young bloke there suggested that the deep holes around Middle Island and the old bridge piers at Karuah hold jewies. I purchase some squid and some SP’s in anticipation of the following morning’s expedition. :biggrinthumb:

Later that afternoon while everyone else was watching Manly cane the Storm, I wandered down for a landbased fish. Using two rods, one with prawns the other flickin’ SP’s I was hoping for my first holiday catch. After 15 minutes a young girl and his Dad rock up to do the same. First cast the 10yo latches onto a whiting while I’m untangling my lines. I persevere and later score a small whiting as well on prawns. By this stage its Manly 40 ….Storm 0 – who really cares! Fortunately the 10yo wasn’t giving me the same flogging.

The weather unfortunately didn’t read my holiday script as I awoke to rain and wind :1badmood: – no matter I’m still heading out. Launch on the western side of Soldiers Point. and travel about all of a 100m north and toss out the squid and start drifting east. The water in this vicinity goes to 43m according to my sounder ….. there’s gotta be a jewie down there with my name on it! Not to be.

Next day there is no rain but the wind is stronger. I’m still determined to catch my prized holiday fish. Unfortunately all I could do was take shelter behind an island and flick some plastics. I’m sure the kookaburras were laughing at me  . Fisheries paid me a visit while I was there and checked my fishing license and my bag – easy …zip.

Last day is the best weather wise and the whole family is on board with my 7yo is determined to mimic her Dad’s cast and retrieve of SP’s…….duck for cover! I enjoy having the family on the boat even if it does mean that I just play deckie while they fish. My :wife: is on fire as she lands fish after fish with live yabbies including these customers.

Back to Sydney Wednesday arvo, off to the Shoalhaven Thursday evening. Another magnificent waterway I enjoy everytime I visit the outlaws. Spent 3 days there with terrific weather practising my SP’s. The best catches were a flattie – 37cm and an EP which were both returned to fight another day.

Overall not an abundance of fish caught but it was a great few days out with the family with plenty of time on the water to boot.

    Cheers,

  3. I noticed this stuff as well last Saturday in MH.

It gives me another excuse when :wife: says "Is that all you caught today" - Ahh yeah .....it was the bioluminescent phytoplankton phosphorous...... :biggrin2:

    Cheers,

    Cam

  4. Great session again Roberta

"one actually launched itself out of the water" - interesting... a flathead that thinks it's a dolphin..... :1yikes:

You've been catching a few with the Squidgey Fish. One of them was stuck to a magazine cover I bought recently and put it in the bottom of the tackle box! After reading your recent posts, I think It's going to make it's way to the top! :biggrin2:

    Regards,

    Cam

  5. Are these rowboats (not powered, not sailboats)?

    Kruzenvax

I’m talking rowboats. Coxless sculls do not have a cox, which is a guy in the back of the boat facing in the direction of travel yelling at the rowers with instructions.

Just to clarify – I was drifting slowly in Middle Harbour near Sugarloaf Point around 7:30am - my first time out that way. They weren’t racing however they do move pretty quickly across the water ... and they kept coming ..... one after another! You can see an example of them in the background of a photo here: http://fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showtopic=34301

We just do 5 quick blasts on the airhorn when they are very close if they are morons - wakes them up if they are coming stupidly close to us.!!!

    Pelican

This is a good option in particular when they catch you unaware!

Thanks for your replies - I think it's pretty clear now :tease: - keep one eye on the SP, one eye on traffic and one on the oyster covered rocks your drifting towards!

    Cheers,

    Cam

  6. Could someone please clarify who has right of way in this scenario?

    a') Amateur fisherman trying to flick plastics off the back of his roundabout or;

b') Coxless Sculls heading in your direction (back to you so they can’t see where they are going).

I managed to dodge a couple by reversing the boat out of their way but in one case I just didn’t hear them coming as they approached (silently and at a rate of knots) but fortunately they caught sight of me and changed direction. One “lady” on the scull bleated out the obvious: “We haven’t got f****g eyes in the back of our heads” as they swooshed past us. I waved apologetically but later wondered who has right of way?

    Cheers,

    Cam

  7. G'day Raiders

Headed out from Tunks Park this morning with brother in law Rod and mate Tom into the reaches of Middle Harbour. We all started with bait initially with minimal enquires on our offerings. I decided to change to SP – 3” minnow in nuclear chicken. Rod sights a school of fish on the sounder - so in goes my SP while Rod and Tom threw in their squid strips. I get an instant hit and I’m on ….zzzzzzz ahh what a loveley sound! After a couple of anxious minutes of playing this fish we sight a silver body coming up from the depths. Elizabeth Taylor! Tom skillfully netted him and a 41cm chopper was on board. I have finally broken my SP duck. :smoke:

Wary that the school might still be around, we were all quickly back in the water. As my SP approached the boat Rod and I were admiring it’s flight when all of a sudden a fish came up from the depths and smashed it zzzzzzzzzz ….and back under he disappeared. I kept tightening the drag as I tried to gain some ground on him as I was wary of the oyster covered rocks nearby…… zzzzzzzzzz snap! :mad3:

Unfortunately I was no match as the 12 pound leader gave way – but what an adrenalin rush! Following that, Tom and Rod both ditched the bait for SP’s in record time! :tease:
