  1. This is my jew boat. It's a 15 1/2 foot Sea Hunter side console made by the Mayfair Plant in Queensland. When my boat was manufactured Mayfairs also made boats under the name of Stessyl and Clarke having taken these companies over in the late nineties. In approx 2002 Mayfairs ended the boat manufacturing side of their operations to concentrate on making trailers namely the well known Tinker and Redco brands. I have owned over 20 boats in my time and I must say this is the best boat I have ever fished in, it has three swivel chairs i.e. two in the stern area and one in the bow area- with a 70 litre ice box located longwise hard up against the rear of the side console unit provides a seat for a 4th person. This boat virtually has three separate fishing areas and fishes three quite comfortably and having the small side console makes it very roomy for a boat of it's size and it has a well designed carefully thought out set up with heaps of modification work done for a song by my good friend Geoff aka Geoff on Fishraider. thank you Geoff your advise and involvement in the work makes this boat a fabulous boat , a boat that nobody would ever want to part with. 24 volt - 82lb thrust Motorguide Electric Motor (electric motor, twin deep cycle batteries and charger installed by Geoff - Brackets to support the electric motor were designed and made by Gary Brickman of Seriously Stainless to save cutting the bow rail :- As many of you may know Geoff and I are senior members of Fishraider and we could do with an offsider or two to help us with launch and retrieve and hopefully add to the jewfish catch either in Botany Bay, the Georges or in the Hawkesbury. In my case I am awaiting hip replacement surgery so I will need as much help that I can get to get my boat out on the water as often as I would like to. I live in the Cambelltown area and Geoff lives in the Auburn area. I am going to put up post sometime in the near future so that I can make up a list of members with good boating experience who would like to try and get onto a jewfish or two. The ideal situation would be to start off from Campbelltown and launch at Brooklyn until I have my hip joint replacement surgery. Any member, who would like to make up the third man and in some instances the fourth man in my boat, please contact me by pm or call me on my mobile on 0413210048. My best friend George aka Cungeee George on Fishraider will be fishing with us on some sessions particularly when overnighters are necessary. The photo below is a random photo and shows that jewfish do exist if you put the time in. Photo taken after a Tom Ugly's bridge session a few years ago with my grandson littlejewgaffer when my back was ok before I was involved in a boating collision at Ballina. Cheers jewgaffer
  2. Hi Snaper no doubt you would get a lot of answers to your question on where you would get the cheapest price to by a Minn Kota electric motor. This is the correct answer :- Address Huett Marine Centre 1131 Pacific Highway Cowan NSW 2081 Phone (02) 9456 1444 Fax (02) 9456 2477 E-mail info@huettmarine.com.au Contact either Craig or Roger Huett Cheers jewgaffer
  3. Good effort on the jew Greg. when the going gets tough diversify your lure baits, I wouldn't be at all surprised if you catch your next jewfish on a Tasmanian devil Cheers jewgaffer
  4. Well done Nathan I'm you sure would be a very patient teacher who has a lot to offer other members by using logic and common sense to help them catch more fish. Cheers jewgaffer
  5. Nice report Snag and it sure looks like an inviting place to do some freshwater fishing. This pike thingy that you caught is there a possibility that it was a musky? as they are very elusive like pike and are known to frequent the cooler states of the U.S. and are stocked in most of the northern lakes I believe, particularly lakes where they have angler's resorts and fishing retreats for holiday makers etc. Cheers jewgaffer

    1000 posts

Well done Browney There has been some really informative posts among them too . Keep up the good work mate. Will be looking forward to your next 1000 posts and having bought the kayak your jewfish sessions among the Cottage Point boats alone should result in ten jewfish netted per week or 500 jewfish per year Cheers jewgaffer
  7. Raiders I'd like to wish a big happy birthday to my old mate Stevie Roosterman Steve I hope you have a real nice 42nd Birthday today with Jamie and the boys- Say hello to Jamie for me! It seems only yesterday that Jamie invited me up to the surprise party for your 40th - there'll be no stopping us as to doing those Hawkesbury sessions as soon as they get these hips of mine sorted out that's for sure. Anyway mate I hope you have a really nice birthday celebration today and it's great news that you and Jamie have a little one on the way to keep the boys company Shirl's excited about it and sends her love and best wishes to the both of you Cheers mate Byron
  8. Greg, you are one one of our keenest fishermen anxious to get among all species of fish. I for one really enjoy your exploits. Keep up the good work mate, enjoy yourself, we all like your style Cheers jewgaffer
  9. Nice session on the rainbow trout Greg. Top fishing old mate! I'm glad to hear that two trout pays your mooring fees. Sounds like one fish per week will just about cover the mortgage with a snapper or two left over to run the Lamborgini Cheers jewgaffer
  10. Hi Terry nice to see a long time member like yourself back and posting on Fishraider again. There has been a lot of water under the bridge and a lot of jewfish passing thru since you were active on the site. Please find attached some photos of my 82LB bowmount electric motor showing the brackets that were designed and made for it by Gary Brickman of Seriously Stainless to save me cutting the bow rail and to allow for locked in permanent mounting. There is a taper down to approx 100mil between my bow rails and my boat being a deep V, a long shaft electric motor provided the necessary 8" - 12" submersion depth for the propellor). Hope this helps Terry and if you have any questions on mounting to suit your bow rail profile don't hesitate to give me a holla as I certainly did enough research on the subject as it wasn't all that long ago at all that I was in your position myself. Cheers jewgaffer To show you the quality of Gary's design and workmanship, Gary also made up an alloy stand to support the weight of my live bait tank which is screwed into the stern gunnel in a perfect unobtrusive position where there is plenty of room to fish at each side of it. The right hand side photo in the first row of attachments shows the carpeted box that was made to house my 2 x 120amp deep cycle batteries (box shown during installation and replaces the pedestal for the bow area swivel chair to save space and the swivel chair has since been mounted onto the battery box. The diy work was done by my good friend Geoff aka Geoff on Fishraider who enjoys advising and assisting members with their set ups, modifications & placements etc.
  11. Congratulations on the fine achievement of reaching 300,000 posts! there's been so much hard work and devotion put in to the site behind the scenes by administration in such a short time that it makes us all proud to be a member of Fishraider Keep up the good work Admin and moderators. It's great to see so many people from all walks of life signing up to Fishraider every day of the week!! Cheers jewgaffer
  12. God help those Yamba blackfish !! Cheers Byron
  13. Hi Raiders Wanted some suggestions on what colour i should paint my new boat, and if anyone has any good ideas, that they have added to there dinghy,as well as pics of live bait tanks built in the floor of the boat thanks ........................................................................................ Hi Snaper I must say I like your new boat very much indeed, it's all you would ever need for bay, harbour and river fishing for the rest of your life- has the makings of a top jew boat in that it virtually has three separate fishing areas and is the sort of boat that can be done up nicely without costing you the earth. I would do the following:- 1- Add upright s/s rod holders mount them back to back on the floor area for rod storage. Mount the storage rod holder units where they won't interfere with a future bimini. Mount the storage rod holders in the void area (basically a non fishing area) in close to the side gunnel directly to the left of the console unit. 2- Add a small lipped table with hinges to fit one of those small portable camper's barbecues and have a removable support leg to rest it on - mount the table on the left hand side of the console unit so that it opens out towards the void area when in use and hangs straight down the side of the console itself when not in use. 3- screw a polyethyline live bait tank into the stern gunnel mounting in on a stand similiar to the stand Gary Brickman of Seriously Stainless made for me in alloy. My live bait tank is of the long and narrow type and was made in Victoria and allows enough room to fish comfortably at each side of it. 4- Add an electric Motor using First Start deep cycle batteries mounted in a home made timber box which can be placed under the bow area swivel chair in place of the seat pedestal and use a first start charger. The electric motor on my 4.6 side console boat is a 2005 82lb thrust foot control model 5- Permanantly mount a custom made alloy bait station locked into to the gunnels and secured by screws behind the live bait tank. 6- Add 8 rail mount rod holders staggering the tilt angles (adjustable by Allen Key- a once off when you are out on the water to keep rod tips and lines separate in currents etc and to allow for line bloom out) 7- Add a bimini which folds upwards from the bow towards the stern and doesn't interfere with your casting. 8- Add work area lights to each side of the bottom of the gunnels mounting the lights in a position that would be just forward of your knees when seated. 9- Add a 70 litre Chilco ice box in dark blue for contrast (The Chilco ice box is slightly narrower but higher than other brands so hopefully the length protusion of the ice box shouldn't interfere with the swivel seat in the bow area which may be able to be repositioned to accommodate it as 70 litres is not a bad size ice box for jewfish) Mount the ice box square on and longways against the rear of the console unit. 10- Add a burley bucket to the stern of the boat - my burley bucket just sits on one of my pods and has sea water pumped thru it permanently as part of a waterfall effect for attracting fish to the back of my boat. It's the water flow that dispurses the burley at the back of my boat. As to boat colours it's a personal choice but I like a combination of cream or white, with a mixture of red and maroon stickers and trim. I have included some photos of my side console boat showing the new 60hp Mercury Bigfoot motor that I bought from Huey's last year to replace a 35hp Evenrude due to needing more power to be able to fish 3 or 4 people all together. Hope this helps and I'm sure other members will come up with more suggestions for you. Cheers jewgaffer Enlarge photo to show position of bait board and storage rod holders which are mounted on the floor opposite the side console unit Live bait tank - photo taken during installation before new 60hp Mercury Bigfoot motor was fitted Shows burley bucket mounted on pod with hose enereing it to disperse the burley and create a waterfall effect Snaper for a boat like yours extra wooden boxes can be made for under seat storage instead of building storage space into the floor. Lots of extras were added to my boat last year by my good friend Geoff aka Geoff on Fishraider who is very talented in designing a fishing boat for practibilty and easy hands on fishing and enjoys doing this type of work .
  14. Hi pure spirit If I was to fish Middle Habour during a run in tide I would allow about 2 hours for the run in tide to pick up thereby giving potential incoming jewfish schoools enough time to come into lower Middle Harbour. In saying that I would not fish upper Middle Harbour due to the lack of results up there for so long now as far as jewfish of breeding size (7-12kilos and upwards are concerned). I believe the shortage of breeding size jewfish in upper Middle Harbour has been put down to water quality due to a run off problem not recovering well enough and worsening after rain. During a run in tide I would fish in the 80 foot of water near the marina anchoring behind the last moored boat adjacent to the rowers club. This is also a good landbased spot and to describe it better you would drive into the park which is situated just on the Sydney side of spit bridge and park along the track just before you get to the rowers club. If you were boat fishing you would anchor in a good average position where you would be taking a medial line behind a group of moored boats as if waiting for jewfish food to come out with the water flow. My father taught me many years ago - If you can't catch jewfish you should at least try and think like them Cheers jewgaffer
  15. Hi Davo1 to Fishraider I have had quite a few sessions in a 4.9 Webster Twinfisher owned by one of our older members "Geoff". Geoff did heaps of research before finishing up with his Webster 4.9 and I must say Geoff's boat has everything you'd wish for in a boat and does it all so well and is one of the most stable boats I have ever had the pleasure of fishing from whether it be anchoring out wide or motoring thru a good size swell between Flint & steel and West Head. I have spoken to Geoff today about your inquiry and you can rest assured that Geoff will pick up on this thread and be in a position to give you as much information as you would ever want to know about Webster Twin Fishers when he returns home sometime next week. Cheers jewgaffer
  16. Rock fishing alert Thursday 28 April to Sunday 1 May 2011 There is a strong possibility of dangerous ocean conditions over the next few days and throughout the weekend. Large swells are forecast for the NSW coast with possibility of swell of up to 3 metres in some areas, breaking dangerously close inshore. These conditions could be extremely dangerous for rock fishermen and boating activities. Stay home in rough weather! Whenever you fish, choose a safe spot. Dont fish alone, make sure you have non-slip shoes, wear a life jacket and never turn your back on the sea. Please forward this email alert to your fishing friends. For updates you can link to the Bureaus coastal weather forecasts. Free DVDs Have you got our free rock fishing safety kit and DVD? Click here to email us and well get one sent to you. We can also send you multiple copies if you want DVDs for your fishing club, school or community group. 17. Hi Brian two hook jewfish rigs which are used for fishing live squid at anchor minus the snapper lead set up (use a shorter 60 cm long leader and a round running sinker the size of a 10 cent piece for your kingfish) are just as effective for trolling live squid. The bottom hook can be inserted into the very top of the neck of the squid so that the barb comes out thru the gap just behind the head. The short leader section in between the two hooks can be held down with an elastic band so that the top hook i.e. the first hook tied (fixed not sliding) is free from the body. Pulling the leader down flat against the body of the squid to form a staight line from the rod tip for better presentation and to prevent spinning when slow trolling. It is very important that the barb of the neck hook faces the tail end of the bait otherwise it will adversely affect your hook up rate in that rather than make fast, immediate contact with the barb of the hook the mouth of the fish will just roll over the round part of the gape of the hook and more often than not making no contact at all with the barb. To make a live yakka for example swim as straight as a missile yet still struggle along drawing attention to itself, cut an even 4 mil off the two tail fins. If fishing a livie at anchor cutting 5 mil off the top fin prevents it from swimming upwards and surfacing on days when bottom predators virtually can't rise and cutting 5 mil off the bottom fin prevents your livie from swimming downwards and hiding in cover on the bottom in case a predator happens to come along Hope this is of some help to you. Are you still living up at Barraba Brian? Cheers jewgaffer
  18. Sorry to hear the sad news about your mother Donna. Our sincerest condolences to you and your family. Byron, Shirl & family
  19. Nice result on the harbour jewfish Kingspooled. I can see you have doubts about using circle hooks on your jewfish rigs and it seems you are concerned about your hook up rate if using them. Circle hooks were definately not designed to suit the mouths of jewfish. Jewfish have a hollow cavity mouth and unless a solid spot is found where the turned barb can penetrate the corner of the mouth the weight of a decent size jewfish alone will pull the mouth flesh away from the hook and you'll have another type of what is known as a jewfish "spit out" to contend with. It's the angle of the turned barb of a circle hook that makes it too difficult to make the initial mouth penetration or otherwise which in the case of a jewfish you virtually get one go at to avoid a spit out. Try penetrating a squid strip for bait with the turned barb of a circle hook and you'll find you'll almost finish up with your elbow in your mouth just trying to turn the hook into a position where the barb will go thru the bait You certainly have gone a long way with your jewfishing since you joined Fishraider and asked the members for advice. Keep up the good work Kingspooled Looking forward to seeing more good results from you. Keep up the friendship with my mate Johnny Doi and we'll get a Hawkesbury jewfish session going as soon as I have my hips replaced which is the next thing on the agenda to get me back out on the water Cheers jewgaffer
  20. Nice effort on the flathead and jewfish R-C and thank you for adding me as a friend Much appreciated! Am I reading this right ? as it looks like you and I will be teaming up with Cungee George in the not so distant future and having a few jewfish sessions in the lower Georges and Botany Bay Keep touch mate Cheers jewgaffer
  21. Nice little session on the Georges with fisher doi Anthony . It's good to see you bringing your boat all the way down from the Central Coast to fish the Georges with Johnny Doi who is not only a keen fisherman but one of nature's true gentlemen I knew Johnny prior to his Fishraider days and have always found Johnny to be a polite and hospitable bloke who's welcome back at my place for any of my get togethers with my family and my friends. I'm not surprised that you enjoyed Johnny's company and it was good of him to put you up at his place to recover for the long drive back after that long demanding session you had. I intend bringing Johnny up to Brooklyn so we can have a Hawkesbury session in my boat in the not so distant future and Anthony it would be a pleasure to have you on board as well to up the catch rate and assist Johnny and myself ), with launch and retrieve Fishing two in the stern and two lightweights in the bow wouldn't be a problem on my boat and on some days we'll be fishing with Cungee George or old Geoff. Give me a call sometime Anthony and we'll talk more about having a some jewfish sessions on the Hawkesbury as it seems I lost your number when I updated my phone. Cheers jewgaffer
  22. Good topic Rockfisherman! Thanks for posting these questions on fuel. The replies so far are interesting to say the least particularly the replies from Geoff and Stevie Roosterman So what is the final answer? What do we do here as far as the carbies are concerned when a boat is not being run under load regularly enough - should we risk damage being caused by dryness? It would be interesting to see what our sponsor Craig of Huett Marine has to say in a reply post in regards to using a preservative type of additive in the carburetter. Surely there would be an additive available to prevent the carby from glugging up or drying out once the stale fuel has been drained out of the tank?? As has been wisely said there are always those risky moments when running an outboard motor with the fuel supply to the carby switched off and again when restarting the outboard with fresh fuel. Rockfisherman I have included a link to one of my recent posts where I asked for advice on the use of stale fuel and fuel maintenance. The reples to your topic are important to me in that I should have included questions in regards to the carburettor. http://www.fishraider.com.au/Invision/index.php?showtopic=55258&st=0&p=397538&fromsearch=1entry397538 Cheers jewgaffer
  23. Good to see yet another good result from you on the Hawkesbury jewfish Andrew Now that you are living up there you will have the opportunity to spend more time out on the water and you'll eventually get enough runs under your belt to go out and have quick hit and run sessions in those same hook up spots in accordance with what you found were the prime hook up conditions. Cheers jewgaffer
  24. Happy Birthday Stewy. :1happybday: Cheers jewgaffer
  25. Hi Sleek3 By far the most reliable landbased spot on the Hawkesbury is the Flat Rock situated right on the point at the entrance to Brooklyn boat ramp. The best times to fish there are three hours each side of the change of each tide with the preference given to the new water period for resident jew i.e fish the run in tide for resident jew waiting for the new water to come in and fish the top of the tide down for the incoming jewfish schools or hopefully a mixture of both. The signs are there for good results this year after a bit of a drought on the larger specimums last year and there have been reliable reports of schools of breeding size jewfish entering the system over the past month or so. Jewfish are communal and school up by nature- where you catch one there is always a possibility that you'll catch twenty one as Cungee George and I expereinced when we fished with jewdreamer early last year and pulled a dozen out albeit they were only around the 2-3 kilo mark they could have been jewfish of any size at the time. The jewfish schools wait in close in the section along that little headland which leads to Flat Rock for baitfish etc coming out of the dead end where Brooklyn Marina is and also for the baitfish schools coming out of Parsley Bay before heading further up river with the tide flow. These are the same baitfish that eventually also finish up well up river particularly at this time of year. You can get easy access to Flat Rock thru the gate to the left of "the little tie up beach" alongside the boat ramp - in fact you can drive right in along the track which leads to the government wharf and fish right in front of your car as the gate is always left open. There is 45 foot of water within casting distance of Flat rock which is right on the point but you can fish anywhere along that section towards the red marker which is placed right on the shoreline the presence of which denotes there is good depth in close all along the section. When I boat fish off flat rock I anchor into 70 feet but fish back into the 45 feet and have most rods out along the line where the rocks meet the sand. The stillness of a calm night can be quite productive well into the pre dawn hours particularly when the run out tide coincides with that particular period. There is heaps of room to fish right along that section so my giving out a precise location like this is not going to dramatically increase the number of jew fishermen who fish there landbased. Hope this helps Cheers jewgaffer
