  1. I have caught bream on it and i have heard if you use the kraft cheedar in the blue box ( it keeps on the supermarket shelf not in the fridge and it is extremely more soft and workable) and mix it 50/50 with devon off the roll, in a blender, or just mix it really well, its dynamite on bream. It ends up making like a dough, I imagine mullet would bite on it too. T'n'K.
  2. You are dead set on fire lately. it sounds like yet another great trip of yours. unlucky about those couple of big bruisers though. when is the best time to catch lizards up there ? I may have to bring the boat and get an expert (you) to teach me a bit about sp's one w/end. I assume around january it would fire is that right or are there better months? pete.
  3. many years ago i fished the Mary river in Gympie QLD (freshwater). A local told me to use the green weed that was growing in the river at the time and it worked a treat! maybe a fly that you would use for blackfish will work? hope this helps. T'n'K.
  4. I am sure that you would catch them around the bridge at night. There is a bit of a channel on the tuncurry side that looks good to me, however you would probably have to change tactics in this spot - squid or a slab of tailor would work here, if you can get hold of some live poddy mullet or yellowtail that maybe even better as the pickers may annoy you up there otherwise! If you fish right where the shadow meets the light from the bridge your right in the zone. The jew hide in the shadow of bridges and dart out into the light to slam livies and squid and such that are minding there own business just swimming past, so they are very much sight hunting in this situation, so its fairly important if the water is clear not to anchor right on top of them or you could spook them. I always try to anchor under the bridge in the shadow and cast to the light and always attack your chosen spot in the direction of the current with a minimum of fuss and noise particularly when dropping the anchor especially if the water is relatively shallow. The depth of water isnt all that important in this situation plenty of food for them to eat is the key ingredient. If the prawns are running they may well be worth a go - when in rome!!!! look forward to trying this with you next time i am in town. tight lines. Pete.
  5. The most important thing to remember about hook size is to use a hook that is relative to the size of the bait! you wouldnt use a 10/0 on a small prawn anymore than you would use a size 1 on a slab from a 2lb mullet, however a size 1 maybe suitable if you are only using a smaller strip off the slab. Always try to present the bait as natural looking as possible and a large hook in a small bait can look very unnatural. At the same time, if the point of the hook is buryed in the flesh of the slab there is little chance of the hook pinning a fish in the mouth. A jewies mouth is very hard in spots, so always make sure whatever hook you are using is razor sharp. Consider the breaking strain of the line also. If you are fishing around structure such as a bridge you may want to UP the line strength for stopping power and in that case there isnt much point to have a small hook on such a heavy line because if you try to put the brakes on a good fish in that sort of situation, there is a good chance the hook will snap or straighten. On the other hand where i fish for jew there is nothing for the fish to run you around so I fish with lighter lines and smaller baits. It is amazing how small a bait can be to catch a big fish however generally speaking - BIG BAIT usually means BIG FISH. tight lines. Pete.T'n'K.
  6. I could agree more Jewieslayer some of my best catches have been when no one else is keen or stupid enough to go out in the rain. If your in a boat and can get under a canopy and stay relatively dry it can be fantastic - bream will bite in rather shallow water on a rainy day also. I love it!! Pete.
  7. whats this roberta ? you mean to say that wendy had you out later than me!!!! and I thought I was crazy, now I dont feel so bad having you out till midnight on sunday night. maybe I should make a special trip up there with my drag net. Are they allowed in wallis lake? -stock up on some fresh school jew bait! well done! sounds nothing like the girls night out I am use to hearing about! hope you ladies convert them into some nice flatties around the leases. Pete.
  8. Well done - good fun on light gear.
  9. I hope my next fishing trip is as shit as yours! excellent work!!!!
  10. AWESOME!!! I am guessing about 9lb -would that be close? good fish. I just love catching them and love hearing about other people catching them almost as much. T'n'K.
  11. sounds to me like you did every thing right except set the hook! When i fish for jew i leave the drag set to where you want to fight the fish and if it is running with it then strike because jew normally have bait and hook in there mouth when they are running with it. I miss very few fish this way. they have a big cavernous mouth and even a relatively small jew can fit a fairly large bait and hook in there . once apon a time i use to set the drag light and wait for the fabled second run - what a crock!!! As soon as they take off with it hit em! good luck. T'n'k.
  12. hi Bo, I only ever use frozen squid and have never had too much trouble catching a kingy. the trick is to make sure that the squid has been looked after and was in pristine condition before it was frozen. if it looks pink - dont buy it! make sure it is nice and white almost transparent and you souldnt have any problems. If you can buy it fresh even better. t'n'k.
  13. mate if your prepared to head a little further north, I use to fish long reef quite regular once apon a time and there are usually some good bream up on the rock shelf in the shallows on high tide. fish with about 8lb line a small pea size sinker right on the hook with chicken or chicken gut. If you have a good look from the top of the hill before you walk down you will get an idea of where any small gutters are and sometimes you can acually see the bream turning on there side feeding. If you use bread here you will also catch the occasional drummer and blackfish. It is very safe as the ocean waves break far away from you and you are only fishing in shallow water, you can even wade the shallows and stand on bolders to cover more ground. this is strictly a high tide spot as there is no water covering the rock shelf on low tide. As the tide drops move closer toward the ocean and cast into the gutters. good luck. t'n'k.
  14. hi glenn, good fish!! they are great fun to catch on light line when they are decent size. every now and then I go after them at a favorite spot of mine at brooklyn and usually catch anywhere from 4 or 5 to a dozen mixed with a few gar. They make great bait and arent bad eating either from that end of the river. I usually eat a couple the night I catch them then freeze the remaining fillets and gut for bream - a bit of bread for berly a small piece of peeled prawn on a small hook under a quill float and bobs your uncle! well done. Pete.
  15. good on ya len and congatulations on catching your first bass! I cut my teeth on bass as a kid growing up on the hawkesbury at north richmond. Fishing for them can become adictive, they really get the heart pumping when they smash that lure!! Not sure of any spots around your way, but if you have a boat the nepean gorge is probably worth a go. As for wheather they are safe to eat from where your catching them - sorry cant help there either. I release any that I catch usually anyway. Hope you get a bigun soon. tight lines. T'n'K.
  16. looks like the hawkesbury is slowly starting to fire up all over the place we fished wisemans on sunday for a few quality fish and another member put up a great post about some jew and flathead at berowra. Dont ya just love it when the fish come on! congrats and keep the posts coming. well done. tight lines t'n'k.
  17. hey Vic arent they just the best fun to catch! Particularly on such a great day and great river system, it was magic on the water on sunday. congrats on a great catch - you caught the fish I was hoping for!!!
  18. Hi Roberta, great report. I felt like I was there- oh thats right I was! I am glad that you and cam enjoyed the day so much. I feel slightly dissapointed that we couldnt manage a decent jew, but at this time of the year, although they are there ,it can sometimes be a little bit hit and miss with the larger ones. Oh well i promised a jew and i was able to deliver even if they were undersize!!The big bream helped to make up for the lack of size in the jewies, and the flattie wasnt to bad either. We have caught several large bream just like that one at that spot. You dont get all that many at night but thy tend to be big when you get them. Sometimes there are plenty there in the day but more like the one I caught earlier in the day. At night time the biguns come out. I thorougly enjoyed the day with both yourself and cam and look forward to meeting up again in the future. tight lines. Pete.
  19. hi luke, do you mind if I ask which system you were prawning in? hawkesbury, georges, harbour? cheers t'n'k.
  20. well done mate on a nice catch! welcome and keep the reports coming!! T,n,K.
  21. The problem is that the media have too much control - its all about ratings!! that has been a problem since the superleague days. They really need to get someone in there that has no affiliation with either the ARL or Superleague and maybe then the fans will start to get what they want.
  22. Hi Cam, I had a great day with yourself and the YAK predetor from the north! Iam just glad YOU had such an enjoyable day. Roberta is going to do a report with some photos when she gets home and settles in - wait til you see the bream we got last night we didnt weigh it, but it must have been pushing 4lb! Roberta and I Laughed for the rest of the night about the exclaimation she made when she first saw it in the light - As this is a family site I cant repeat what she said, only to say that it cracked me up big time. Hope to catch up soon and have another fish and maybe a bigger jew! tight lines. Pete.
  23. Hi Roberta, I will PM you some info! Pete(t'n'k).
  24. mate I have never caught a Barra so I cant comment on them, however I have caught jew to 25pound and kings to 80cm and kings win hands down in the sheer power department- also when a jew is ready to be gaffed it rolls on its side exhusted - I have never seen a kingy do that! they never give up! Having said that i would still rather catch a jew - I guess its personal taste. Pete(t'n'k)
