  1. Hey Clutch, re: nautical maps. Have you got a map on your computer with co-ords/contours etc for the Hawkesbury area?? Where did you get it (or is it for your plotter?), If not I'd love a copy/link
  2. Well done riders! Sounds like a cracker day Hey Clutch, I saw your other post re: nautical maps. Have you got a map on your computer with co-ords?? Where did you get it (or is it for your plotter?), If not I'd love a copy/link
  3. Has anyone had any experience with Narrabeen bait and tackle store (nth of the bridge). They sell fresh squid but it always seems too pink and limp/old. Does anybody get there squid from here and use it on jewies or kingies?? Wondering if it's worth still buying this or catching my own (caught 5 squid, 2 cuttlefish near palmy wharf on Sunday night, yeah!!!! but don't think i'll be able to consistantly produce them)

    Kingies

I was trolling a wreck and a few other spots in Pittwater with my downrigger and live squid for for a few hours for nothing. I think I could do with a few more tips myself.
  5. I competitively sailed racing dingies for many years and the boats were of foam sandwich construction and timber. We used to rig them up and drill holes everywhere (even under the water line). As long as you do it properly you will have no probs. Ask a boat builder or experienced guys at any retail boating outlet and they'll give you the info you need. Do it properly and you won't have any problems. Suction cups and other glues etc sound like a bad idea to me. You had bad experiences before, but that doesn't mean it isn't the best solution! People have been mounting transducers through the hull and transom for decades and wouldn't be doing it if it wasn't the best solution.

    Narra Goon

Jewie social once she breaks her water?? Narralakes may even take one on fly
  7. Trying out my home made downrigger with the old man in Pittwater and surrounds for kingies and maybe trying for a jew, depending on the weather. I need to catch a jew BADLY, and it seems their around at the moment.
  8. I have my 27MHz on a six foot aerial and my FM radio on a six foot aerial. I think they are slightly different (they look exactly the same) but my FM aerial has FM sticker on it. Not sure if they are different aerials (different spiralling of the copper etc). But even with this I still have problems around the same spots as you (Juno, F/S). Therefore maybe a bigger aerial won't fix the prob for you. I'm keen on an answer too, so come on all the raider smarties.

    New Bits

I want a Poly!! Damn they look good and they look like they'd sit real nice in the water. Give me one Santa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  10. It's got to do with the modulating frequency of the FM band and the 27MGHz band. It tends to bounce off the water and scatter away from you and is particularly bad on a rough day as the chop deflects the incoming frequencies. Taking the boat out of the water raises your height above sea level and is in a better spot to pick up signals. Also get better rebound response from nearby vertical objects that can increase the strength of a signal. Water is horizontal and much less effective. This may help, but i'd suggest ringing the real Dr Carl Cruising Schnitzel cause what I wrote above is absolute bullsh#t. sorry for the bum steer Or maybe try a longer/better aerial. I have 2 six foot aerials and still have trouble picking up FM stations in the Hawkesbury, but on the occasions I've needed to use my 27Mghz, Coastal Patrol picks up my signal down in Botany Bay which is pretty impressive!! I think the high hills around the Hawkesbury don't help the reception. I do know some bands refract better around large objects such as mountains, but you'd have to ask an electrical engineer (or HAM radio guy) and they should be able to help you get the best out of your gear.

    Seasickness

I use to sail every weekend competitively. I surf heaps! Small boats and swells don't get to me.....but.... Last two times I went out for a charter for bottom bashing, I was sick as I've ever been. I noticed it was only when the boat stopped (and after 30mins) and I looked down to bait up. As soon as I looked down I could feel myself started to get dizzy followed by a "here we go" feeling. Then your saliva starts getting bubbles in it and it starts - death by bile!!!! I noticed I was o.k if I laid down, but if I even tried to get up??!! For my bucks day early in Jan I'm going Marlin fishing with site sponsors "game fishing charters". We'll be taking 3 boats out and having a small tournament between boats. I think if we're trollling, I'm not looking down and I keep busy I should be right. I'll try and use all the suggestions here, cause I'd hate to spoil the day. I think i'll try arm bands, ginger tabs, travel calm and not looking down. Maybe I should get 10 strippers instead and stay home.
  12. Wow, your first post Stan and your ripping shreds already? Nice people here talking civilly and with respect. Heaps of other Forums out there that would almost welcome you talking like that, but you won't get far here. Go have a fish/crab calm down tell us all your decent crab spots (oops forgot..u got none). I like the passion you've got for your crabs though.....I'm sure we'd all like to see a photo with you with a good crab and a smile!! and for those that have crab traps - I was talking to an old timer a few months back and many years ago he said a good spot was off Portugese beach in Pittwater, go out 30ish metres and line up the northern point of Portugeuse with the western side of Lion Island. I'm only telling you this because I don't crab so someone else may be able to use the info. (and if you catch any I get the biggest one from your first haul)
  13. Was my first social, and being just down the road, was nice and convenient too. Didn't get to throw some fluff, but was good to meet a few of you! pity I had to go to lunch otherwise a few beers would have been tasty. My thanks also to the guys for organising and especially to Bluecod for that nice dry tarp!! Awesome prize too, thanks ABA!! Pity I didn't turn up in time to claim it See yall at the next one (hoping it has something to do with Jew's) kingy
  14. When you get to Narrabeen shops (immediately before the bridge - only one bridge around these parts) your almost there. Don't get off at the shops. Go over the bridge and the bus will turn right at the lights. There is a bus stop 200m after the turn at the QUIX petrol station. Get off. Cross the road and walk North 200m and your at the park/lake. see you there!

    Surf Crabs

Was down fishing the beach last night at Collaroy/narrabeen and damn crabs were destroying most of my baits. I pulled in a crab with it's body about the size of my palm. I hooked him up and threw him out more from revenge than anything, not expecting it to be any good as bait. Is it any good? I'm thinkin maybe jewies or sharks could be keen on em. Anyone had any luck or know if their any good???
  18. Nice and protected from the winds, sent out 3 squid jewie rigs, tried to tease some mullet for live bait and they were unresponsive to bread (a few REALLY small ones). Released a 28cm bream on my light tackle. No squid to be caught either with my jigs. Jews were uncooperative for the night however about 8pm the nice russian guy fishing next to us was pulling his prawn in and at the surface 1ft from the wharf a salmon smashed his bait and he pulled it straight onto the wharf within 2 secs!!! it went 2.5kgs and was over 55cm. Totally out of the blue (they didn't seem to be feeding and no sign of other fish) I threw my small white sluggo around for 5 minutes but couldn't raise any more. Fun evening out of the weather!
  19. I reckon Harry is pretty spot on. About $4000 to $5000 will get you something you'll feel confident enough to tackle the close in reefs.
  20. I was in the same boat about a year ago (looking for a 4.5m tinnie). There are so many options, windscreens, centre consoles, tiller steer, all the options, condition of boat/motor trailer etc. My best advise is look at the engine first - you can pick tinny hulls up pretty cheap ($1000 to $2000) motors can ranges from $300 to $5000 for say a 40hp depending on age. I would prioritise the motor especially if your going offshore, you won't want to go out far if you haven't got confidence in your motor. I wasn't confident and cost me $5000 for a new 40hp! Ebay is good to look at to suss things out and I recommend looking for 3 months before starting to pull your wallet out if you want value/quality. Martin is spot on, get a check list of all your needs and wants. This will make the decision more of a science rather than an emotional buy which could cost you big $$'s in the long run!!
  21. Going to McCarrs Creek reserve wharf (pittwater) for a fish with a mate this afternoon up to high tide @ 8pm. Taking fresh squid and Sp's for Jew or Kingies. Am I dreaming? I'm thinking all the crap from the rain coming out of the creek will attract baitfish therefore kings Jews. Is my theory in the ball park? Going here because it should be out of this terrible wind (beach not a comfortable option). I know some of you guys online now should at least be able to backup or dispell my hopeful theory. Any other places close by worthy?
  22. I've been throwing quite a few sp's around narra lake in the past month (at five different spots) and out of approx 7 outings got a big fat nothin. I think the lake needs to open up get refreshed
  23. Good on ya AGAIN! But I think I like the look of him in his yellow waders better (from last big jew photo). RESPECT
  24. Not a Pongrass is it? I had a very similar looking boat quite a few years ago, although it had a rounded off square bow but they had ones that looked like yours too. Bluecod and Joe have a few years on me so maybe go with them.
  25. Nice fish Jimmy, awseome stuff!!!!!! You are Jimmy Barnes aren't you
