Deepwater Kings

G'day raiders. Been a bit busy with fishing lately to post as the fishing has been literally hot. We went out with a few very good mates for a deep jigging session. Been doing a lot of this lately and it is addictive. Haven't used my squid jigs in more than a month. THe conditions were bad to crap but went out in the Noble anyway.

We nailed a good sized king. Went over a meter. The first for the year...took a bloody long time! Missed several chances earlier in the year due to bad braid.

This is perhaps the most satisfying method of catching my favourite quarry. It is great exercise and can't get enough. Next is to get a stuck into some bigger fish! Cheers kelvin

Kelvin,

you are a legend on the Kings without doubt!

I'm intrigued by the photo. Deepwater Kings but the photo looks like it was taken inside the Harbour. Where did you catch that Hoodlum?

Cheers

Peter

Mate what a fish!

You look like youve put on 10kgs of muscle since i saw you

downrigging at neilsen a month ago haha.

Id give anything to catch and land a king like that!

Id say its the ole decoy background photo method pete :)

I tell you what, it was an expensive day. We lost a LOT of jigs to bloody leatherjackets. Hooked and caught a few leatheries and other fish but we got a few kings. Jigging deepwater is almost hypnotic....kind of like running a marathon- you forget the pain, most of the time! Got to use the best gear to make things as easy as possible. At the boat ramp, lots of people stare at our gear, with all the saltigas and stellas.

Pete, I always take my fish photos at middle head!!! :biggrin2: We were off shore for our kings. Took several hours to get there and back!!!. Cheers Kelvin

Well done Kelvin, thats a beautiful kingy...

Great stuff and you might have to gicve me a few pointers when it comes to jigging as i havent really done much of it.

I tell ya Oz, once you hook a king on a jig you will be hooked to this type of fishing. It enjoys an almost fanatical following in parts of asia especially Japan. Most of the high end gear like the stellas and saltigas are designed primarily for this type of fishing. I couldn't wait for the water to cool down for the jigging season to really kick off this year.

With jigs, you have fooled the fish from start to finish. UNlike trolling, it is your efforts which gets the results...most satisfying! and that HIT is something else. Learnt a lot from jigging for samsons in WA and from a couple of jig specialists from Japan. Our band of merry jiggers are getting really good at working the jigs and getting really fit into the bargain. My Noble is almost parked at some of the reefs offshore at the moment.

The fight from a king even the small ones with 100m or more line out is something else. Unlike samsons and most other fish, kingies do not float to the surface when cranked up from the deep. They fight all the way to the net or the gaff. Real heart in the mouth stuff!!

Just give me a buzz if you are interested! Might have to start a jigging club at fishraider. Cheers kelvin

Thank God for that Kelvin,

I thought I was going to receive the biggest kick in the guts ever and discover these brutes were lurking in the harbour somewhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Kelvin,

Very nice kingie.

What is your favourite size kingie for eating?

Jewies for example taste better when bigger but flatties taste better when smaller.

Whats the story with kings? Only ever caught them up to around 70cm. Lost most of the bigger kings hooked.

Good reading report and pic.

Cheers.

Depends on how you cook them. For frying, I like fish in the 75-85cm range. Smaller fish are great for baking or steaming whole. The larger fish are great for sashimi /sushi. BUt they MUST be handled with care if you want sashimi. Don't let the fish flap around as it bruises the flesh. Dispatch the fish real quick, bleed it and put it on ice. Fillet it as soon as possible then refrigerate. Cheers kelvin

I gotta agree with you kelvin. It sure is addictive. I can't wait to give it another shot

Here's a king Kelvin put me onto - his boat, his gear. makes it easier

I hooked one and dropped him half way up. Kept jigging fanatically wanting another hookup and was rewarded with my first king on a jig. around 85cms

thanks kelvin!
