Hello Everyone, first time posting about a decent fish that was actually caught!!!

Previous attempts at balmoral was a disaster, catching a kingy to see that it wasnt hooked properly and after they surface they spit the bait out.... Boy do i have alot to learn... Any hoo

Arrived at Balmoral Wharf around 2am on the saturday night.

Fished for Squid and Yakka's however only managed to catch 2 squid. However plenty of yakka's but they were way to big.

Fished until morning came, me and my mates were all exhausted, until we started to spot the kingys

By then there was alot of people on the wharf, and people where throwing their lines over me. Was a bit fed up.. So i took the sinker out, and placed a squid head where i saw the kingy last.

The moment i dropped the bait and was adjusted the drag, i can see the kingy tailing the squid, then turning around and BAM! :1prop: , i was very lucky that he swam towards the open water, Boy do they pull hard!!!. Was thinking to myself "i Poped my kingy virginity" i was trying to be very calm, and everyone reeled in their lines Thanks! expect for one guy which my line got nearly tangled with. I do recall now that paulthetaffy said "No ones got a net??"hehe now i know its you. Back to the story i reeled the kingy towards the wharf suprised that the kingy was exhausted because it was on its side. Called my friend to go down to the wharf and grab the line, but before he could grab it, the kingy just dived under the wharf then PING! :1badmood:

So fustrated i nearly had him!!!!

Rebaited and casted out again this time with a sinker and a very good nice live yakka.

After 30minutes my line goes off again!! ZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Very strong runs at first, i thought it was another kingy this time i wasnt going to loose it! peeled line off like no tomorrow!! after around 4-5 bursts i gained power over him, he was coming from a distance, YES yellow tails!! and the Yellow stripe!!! WOOOT got him, only to see that it wasnt a Kingy once it came closer

but happens to be a nice fat fish. i cant put a name on it because there was some arguements saying samson or amberjack measured to be around 50cm

I question to all the professional king fishermens!! How can you tell if the kingy is exhausted?? And that it would not take anymore runs??

I hope people fishing on boat near balmoral had some luck as there was a pack of sambo's or kingy's going crazy near the moared boats.

Cheers Sam

Nice fish! looks to me like a cross between a sampson and an amberjack  . Juvenile sampsons have blotches on their body and have a higher body profile (not as slim?) than kings and ambers. Your fish looks to have the body shape of a sampson, but not the colours of a sampson... Did the fish have dark blotches before it died?

And with kings, they always have gas left in the tank when u least expect it. That is the reason why they are renowned fighters with that never say die attitude. When you think the battle is won, you'll get pinged!

Good report mate. Yeah I thought you had that king beat!! Such as shame. I had a few rats there last summer on pillie cubes using bream gear and no matter how much you fight them out wide they always have enough in the tank for one last run under the pylons. Think I've landed one out of five!

Congrats on the amberjack / samson though - I've not heard of them being caught that size at Balmoral before! It's a good sign for the harbour land-based spots in general - I think we're in for a good summer!!

Hi Sam,

So you are a Fishraider, I was going to ask if anyone is a Fishraider that Sunday morning. I was there, I was watching you reeling in that kingy, I really thought that is already gone because he is already on it's side but unfortunately the line touches the pylon, it's easily on 80's cm mark, but anyway you got the samson fish, congrats on that. Those small squids that your friend catching really work a treat.

I didn't have much luck myself but enjoyed the morning, I was the skinny guy with the mo you're talking to

in the early morning, hope to see again there sometime.

Cheers,

Littledinghy

Great Report, nice to read that things happen land-based too.

It's tough fighting at Balmoral jetty on a weekend, did that too for a while.

Either there is no place, because people camp out overnight :biggrin2:

or you get a good spot (at the front) and then all the other squeeze in from the side.

That's why I got my inflatable (still have it , and keen to sell it to you, PM me) with a 4HP (It broke down :( ),

it just took me out there where the fish are.

Catching a Kingy from the wharf hard. One (memorable) evening at Clifton gardens, there was a school of

kingies, going wild. I manages to loose my tackle about 10 times. No 1 fish caught, and all the other fishos

they filled their bucket (80% of the fish caught probably undersize).

But I managed later on (a few weeks down) to get one just legal. So good on you with your efforts, you are close,

reeeeeeeeeel clozzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzze.
