Fishing for luderick

Yo guys,

I wanted to start fishing for luderick since apparently they taste great and fight well too. I have no idea how to target them, what size Hooks to use, spots, tackle or methods. All I know is that I can use weed for bait. Any help would me greatly appreciated and thanks in advance guys.

P.S I have a really low budget so anything on the cheaper side for tackle would be good

Cheers guys:beersmile:

Certainly the species to target on a budget!  Floats, hooks, other accessories are cheap.  Rod can be cheap.  Reel can be cheap.  Bait is free!  I say "can be" for rod & reel as, like anything, you can spend a LOT of $$ if you want to!  The Jarvis Walker Aurora series "Ocean Blackfish" rod (12ft, 2pc) is dirt cheap at around $40.  There used to be more rod options under the JW Aurora series, but they have discontinued a few models.  I have a 9ft Aurora "Mooloolooba" rod which I use as my light/short blackfish rod but it is one of the discontinued ones.  They also used to make the "Estuary Blackfish" model which I think was 10ft or 10.5ft.  The trend nowadays is to use a specialist floating mono line which does cost a little more than standard mono.  I just use braid as my mainline.

I am just about to get back into blackfishing. I have an Alvey blackfish reel on a Wilson 10' blackfish rod. I used to use mono and grease it to float but I just put a 150m top shot of a floating mono line in flouro pink. I'll run a light flourocarbon trace. I like a size 10 sneck hook in green in the estuary. Get an assortment of floats and go with the lightest you can to suit the conditions. I like a running float which means you need to use a sliding stopper above the float. Weight the trace with split shot to get the float to sit with only about 25mm of the tip above the water. I'm going to try a weed fly on my next trip.

Tight lines!

Hi Arthur

For your main line Sunline Floating Special in 10 Lb would be a good way to start . Not all tackle shops sell it so do a search

on mr Google .As for hooks Gamakatsu  Pan Fish size 8 Green & use a leader 70 cm of fluorocarbon  6lb .

Mate I'll keep it simple any good soft to medium action 2-5kg low mount rod in 10 to 12 foot for the estuary will suffice. Reel a decent 2500 spin if you can't handle a cemtrepin, for a float ones that take 0 amd 1 size barrel sinkers. 6lb fluro carbon trace and 12lb main in case of sawtail surgeon activity! Greased mono is fine nothing wrong with it old school or not it's just an extra chore! To rig add a  sliding rubber topper on your line then a small bead, then your float barrel sinker and a small swivel about 40cm of trace and I prefer mustad 540 number 8  hooks hard to go past. Additionally bait and burley a landing net and a keeper. Pick a spot and fish either side of the tide to see what works best. Have your float a level to the water as conditions allow I normally have mine sitting half a centimetre if that above the water unles it's choppy or a string current. Good luck oh and there's no right or wrong way in the world of luderick fish the way that suits you amd catches you fish. A good place to start for a spot is Clarkes Point at Woolich
