Does a new fishfinder/chartplotter require a new transducer

Hey, Any help appreciated, This is probably a silly question to some, but as a lot of places seem sell the unit and the transducer separate, I got to thinking if i need a new transducer or not?

I currently have an Lowrance Elite-4 that came with the boat when i got it, and it does not seem to work well at all, Navionics maps wont load on it and as far as the fish finder goes it does not seem very good at all, unless i'm doing something wrong.

Long story short i have the green light from the Mrs to get a new one, and I'm looking at the Lowrance  Elite 9 TI combo or the HDS7 carbon combo both a similar price from a shop  anyone out there smarter than me and can advise what unit is better and also if i need to buy the a new transducer or if i can just use one that's currently connected to my Elite-4 ????

Should also mention main use will be in Lake Macquarie and Hawkesbury river

Sorry photo of back of boat is the best shot i have of the transducer

Hi doza48, my guess would be the transducer on the back of your boat in the picture would be something like a big standard HST WSBL  or something similar to that - given that it’s hooked up on o the little Lowrance head unit.

That sort of transducer would be compatible with every brand sounder/head unit available that I can think off, if it’s navico that means Lowrance, Simrad, Raymarine etc etc.

I wouldn’t worry too much about that transducer at the moment, just get the head unit first and work from there.

For all we know the reason it’s not working too well could be the position of the transducer.

I’ve got a Simrad setup with the same sort of transducer and it works fine. I know there is better transducers that would give awesome results for the $$$$ but I’m happy to use the system as is.

So id upgrade the head unit and work from there assuming that you should then get a decent picture and work on the transducer position then.

Ill attach a pic of the basic results from my setup with a similar transducer.

About the maps not working, do you know for sure the copy you have is ok , ie the card functions ok.

Can you explain further why it’s not working, how do you know it’s not working or is the card being read by the head unit in the slot ? I know on my unit I can view the name of the card inserted in each card slot.

Hi Doza48

You couldn`t go wrong with either the elite 9 or hds7 carbon, they will come with a transducer.

Make sure they are  totalscan models where you get everything with the one transducer. Add the fish reveal update and away you go.

you will be amazed at the difference between your old and new finder.

good luck.

Thanks for your help guys, Went back to ask more questions and as yella king said it would, it actually came with the transducer, despite what they told me on the weekend when the young guy told me that no one supplies them with the transducer included these days, so the guy i saw last night pulled it out of the box to show me it did come with a totalscan transducer.

So i got the HDS7 Carbon, now just need install it and then see what it can do

Ill have 1 less excuse for not catching fish, i may have to admit I'm useless if i cant start catching ?

Sorry for another probably stupid question.

I ended up getting the HDS 7 Carbon, and had it installed by the guys that service my motor, I was a little worried when i picked it up and the guy who installed said that unit didn't pick up the total scan transducer  on set up so he put in (generic 83/200) so i popped down to the boat ramp on the way home and gotin the water only to find the sonar was not working, tried rebooting and setting up myself and yet again there was no total scan transducer to select from the list of transducers.

Anyone set one of these up before? or know what transducer to pick from the list? Or anyone have one and can see what transducer was selected on set up?

I'm about to do the same thing as you, but will be going for the 9Ti instead

from that list, I'd select the generic 50/200

good luck

Hope yours works when you put it in the water

Possibly you got a dodgy transducer?

Only thing I can think of is to find someone with the same head unit as you then swap them over and see if the fault remains. If it does then looking at the transducer would be the next option. You can also try your head unit in someone else's boat to see if it works there.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I hate it when technology doesn't work as it should

How far north are you in lake Mac? I'm in Narara on the CC, so when I get mine sorted, I'll be happy to come up and take a look if you want.

At Eleebana, Formally of Narara ?

Hey doza48

On the transducer cord near where it plugs into the finder there should be a silver tag that tells you the make of the transducer ( eg . hst-wsbl/hst-wsu)

If this tag is still there, see what it say and select that transducer. If the tag isn`t there you my have to contact lowerance .

hope this helps you mate.

Hi Doza

I brought the same unit  myself and also own a Elite HDI but have not been on he water yet but I'm guessing the Totalscan transducer will be networked  under "Device Configuration " and will have to be activated under that menu.

If I remember correctly the Elite transducer should work if you select generic 83/200 khz

Okay I’m making progress slowly I finally got the unit to read the transducer ( i needed to turn the 1st sonar slot so it would read the total scan transducer in the second slot)

Took forever to update the unit but finally got there.

Got on the water and it seems to work when going slow but as soon as I speed up the image drops out and the depth gauge drops out.

Not sure if I’m doing something or if the guy last that installed have put the transducer in the wrong spot.

Sometimes you need to aim your trans slightly forward not flat   at speed uour signal isnt comin bak to trans its comin up behind your boat..rick

Mine used to read out the back at speed, usually because it flipped up. I fixed that and lowered the transducer and it improved but now it intermittently reads .5 m and sounds the depth alarm! I suspect I may have stretched the cable a bit. ?

When you say tilt forward, is that tilt the tip down?
