The Asian Squid
Hi guys, I just wanted to get a new combo specifically for yakkas and was wondering what was a good combo for bait and lure. Was also planning to catch bream and squid on this rod as well. Thanks.
noelm
Gear for any of those species doesn’t need to be overly expensive, are you intending to fish shore based or in a boat or kayak?
Derny Driver
I use a tiny little kids rod with a $30 reel, 10 lb nylon line ...samaki jig for yakkas, Squid jigs for squid. Works a treat.
Rob81
Really depends on budget and reason why you'd want to catch yakkas. If yakkas for bait, they have specific sabiki rods out there, unsure if any good. If you want to fish for them for fun, look up "Aji rods". But a the end of the day, really depends how specific you want to get into them. If you want the 1 setup to cater for bream & squid as well, Id probably look for a squid setup (Egi setup), rather than the yakka (aji) one. Again, depends if you want to get really specific with it all. And if not, any other rod/reel should do it, as long as not heavy setups. Youd want to learn towards more into the "Light" department.
BaitDropper
Being shore based, kayak or boat ( as Noel asked ). If this is your main target fish, then yeah, get something suitable. If it's bait type fishing, any rod will do.. I always have a light rod in the boat, an El- Cheapo, a 2-5 kg rod with a cheap 2500 reel, does all my light stuff, even use it when targeting bream in the river and even Flatties. Totally depends on where/how you fish...

The Asian Squid
Thanks for all the replies guys. I appreciate it, but I am going to be fishing landbased around wharves. Also I was going to go for the exact setup that slothparade mentioned, but with a 2000.

R E G I C Y C L E
The freams is a solid reel, especially if you can pick it up around the $150 mark. Also, you can't be doing the daiwa/shimano mixy matchy thing... one of the unspoken rules of fishing.
