  1. I used to own a 55sw MG which served me well for 8 years. I had to replace the brushes at around 4 years and was only around $30 to do so. The wireless foot pedal was awesome also. I reckon I had well over 500 hours use with it and sold it in perfect working condition late last year when I updated to a xi5 gps 55. What can I say about the new leccy........why didn't I update it sooner hahaha. Spot lock is simply awesome, the jog feature is just as awesome. I havn't yet traced a route and replayed it though because I'm finding the jog feature is good for me at the moment. It has taken some getting used to the remote control over the foot pedal however, but I guess with all the extra features of the xi5 has over my old 55sw, the remote is required. I know that the new foot pedal does not have the complete operation of the remote, so I am holding off on that addition. I have found that the anchor feature to be pretty much spot on and as previously mentioned don't believe the marketing gimmicks of brand A vs brand B. You don't need to connect to a sounder to have the gps feature activated, the xi unit itself has it's own gps. It is NOT essential to have the xi5 connected to a lowrance, or any other brand of sounder, to get the gps function working. I will eventually nmea it to my new 12LIVE, but it is not high on my priority list at the moment. You will hear both good and bad about all brands mate, I stuck with MG cos I had no dramas with my old one. If I had of switched brands and it gave me dramas, I would have thought I should of stuck to what I knew about my first one if that makes sense. My boat is a 2009 4.5m Brooker side console with 50hp 2 stroke Mercury. Against the run out tide (1.7m to 0.4m) in the Georges river on Sunday morning with my mate onboard also, it ran at 2.6 knots full speed into the current and wind and I hadn't charged the battery(120AH) for about 3 weeks. It had been used for about 15 hours total in those three weeks, using speed and direction controls to correct my drifts and also the anchor/spot lock feature countless times. I hope some of this helps mate, good luck with your new purchase. You will be kicking yourself for not updating to a spotlock model of either brand sooner haha
  2. I have always used gamakatsu occy circles 4/0 to 8/0 from when I started my obsession with mulloway. Always snelled for both dead and live bait. In the past year for dead squid small sized, either whole, hoods or heads I have been experimenting with standards occy hooks again snelled. I cant say it's made a difference in my catch rate. I still to this day, some 8 years later have not hooked and landed a jew using livebait with a single hook. That doesnt mean I dont try and others always question me when rigging a livie with snelled hooks. It works for me, so I stick to it in most cases. Either boat based or landbased I never strike with either snelled combo, circles and j's, I just let the drag set the hooks and generally pick up after the first run. When I first started, I always rushed to grab a screaming reel/rod and learnt slowly not to lift the rod until that first run was done. I couldn't begin to tell you how many I have lost by being too exuberant in my early quests. It's what works for me and have had quite good success by just leaving the rod till after that first run. Mate, if your catching them using j hooks regularly, why change? It obviously works for you. If you went to occy circles and lost a cracker, you'll always be left wondering "If I had just used j hooks......"

Touch wood guys....i havn't really found this to be true. Most of mine are caught on the Georges River, we all know how busy that place gets and the noise from all the other boat traffic. NYE just passed, i had the water police right next to me, checking safety equipment and licence, with their engines running and I hooked up. Luckily on the other side of the boat to where they were. They were quite impressed with the fish. Released that one and caught a further 2 within 2 hours before I called it quits. I was more or less under CC bridge from 10pm to about 2 am.

I will add, almost everytime i targeted mulloway with bait last year resulted in a triple by the end. 90% were released, all were caught on anchor and didnt move once i released them.

Last 2 sessions i have targeted jew, my mate and i have caught 3 or 4 on each occasion. All anchored up and with bait. All released. I dont think they spook any others around if you release them.
  6. Pretty sure you need to setup up a nmea network first, then the mg gateway kit adapts off that
  7. Mate are you sure they are yakkas....look like tailor to me, undersized at that. Well done on the ep though
  8. Pretty sure its structure based.....well greater contouring at the very least
  9. Recently upgraded from a HDS10 Gen 2 with LSS2 to the new HDS Live 12. Structure scan is much more crisp in both the down and side scan(AI 3 in 1 tranny) on the live unit over the LSS2 setup I was previously running. Being able to view the screen with polarized sunnies on is also a good thing with the new unit. Just this week I traded in my old Navionics platinum plus 62p+ card to the new platinum xl3 62p+ but havn't yet had the chance to take it out on the boat to test. I wasn't able to access all the features the Live unit presents me with my old card, hence the trade in. The thing that bugged me most with the new unit/old card was the inability to make the water shades of blue, like it previously did with the Gen2 unit. Navionics also has the ability to share maps - community based edits I think they are called, but I havn't yet thought of playing around with this option. I more or less know my local haunts well enough these days. Im happy with Lowrance, Ive had a HDS 7 Gen1, then the HDS10 Gen 2 with LSS2 and now the HDS12 Live. Touch wood, I have never had an issue. I wanted to stick with this brand due to the purchase of a new Motorguide xi5 which was upgraded about October 2018 from a MG 55SW.

    Merry Christmas

I would love to wish all raiders a very Merry Christmas. I hope you all enjoy your day with family, friends, eat plenty and spread much cheer. Stay safe on the roads. A big thank you to all that have offered advice in my posts Cheers and Merry Christmas Mick
  11. I forgot to add that I did install a fuse between the battery and the switch panel.....felling protected now
  12. Cheers fellas for the responses. ZMK1962 I rewired as you mentioned on my diagram, without a fuse box though. I had some inline fuse casings in the garage that I put to use. Everything looks much neater now under the dash and all my circuits are protected with fuses. Checked everything once finished and all my lights, bilge and new sounder work fine.
  13. At this time of year mate, go and sit at a boat ramp as everyone uses the water. Introduce yourself, say hi to people, tell them your looking at buying a boat and ask to check out what their boats are like, like what you would be looking at getting. I got my license in 2007 and bought a boat not long after. I started with a 12 foot ally tinny and a almost new 15hp yamaha 2 stroke tiller steer. Boat was a bit rough, so over a winter a year later, I stripped all the paint(3 layers) and repainted, did the same to the inside and also added some seats, lights, very basic sounder. Repaired/restored the trailer while the boat was off it too. Was a great learning curve. Also, it gave me my sea legs I guess you could say, easy to launch, retrieve and fish/cruise around the Georges river/Botany bay(as far as Kurnell), Port Hacking river, Shoalhaven river, StGeorges basin. Not too large that is was a hassle to clean and store somewhere, tow, launch and retrieve, but big enough to learn waterways and all the little nuances that come with owning a boat. Paid 2k for it and sold it for 2.2k after the restore etc 2 years later when I bought a brand new boat, my perfect boat, which I still have. At 4.5m, ally and side console with a 50hp, it was a completely different beast. Heavier to tow, harder to launch and retrieve solo, longer to keep clean etc etc, not to mention being new, so I was very cautious about hitting anything in the water and while launching retrieving etc, until it got its first scratch haha. Took a little while to adjust and now some 9 years later, I find it just as easy as the tinny. Like you said, your not in a rush, so look at other peoples boats that are similar to what you would be looking at. 10 - 12 feet tinnies are easy and basically the same if you choose that option, but the 14-16 feet range you have so many options. In my opinion, ally is the way to go. I would say start small, enjoy and learn the water and learn what it takes to keep a boat. You will see how much you actually use it too, so you wont have dumped a large amount of cash on something that may only be used a dozen times a year. After a year or so, if your happy, then upgrade. While I have always fished since about age 6(Im 40 now), my life changed when I purchased my first boat in 2007 and even more so when I upgraded to a new larger boat in 2009. At that point, I really started to get into fishing seriously. The countless amounts of money spent on fishing tackle, starting with $100 combos to the $1500 combos I have now, to the countless amounts of money spent upgrading my sounders, trolling motors etc etc to the countless hours I fish these days to the cold, fishless all nighters I pull fishing for my passion, the mighty mulloway, it is easily still the best decision I have ever made in my life!!!! Hope some of this helps mate and hoping that you find the boat that will change your life too
  14. Hi again fellas, So after tidying up all my existing switch wiring under the dash, the next step is to wire up the new sounder. I have a switch panel on the dash which I will be wiring into. Also under the dash is like a distribution block for grounding, but it also takes an input of 12v direct from the positive on the battery and input from the negative. The positive on the distribution block then wires into a 15A inline fuse then into the switch and is chained for all 4 switches on the back of the switch panel. Lowrance recommend a 5A fuse to be wired in. Am I correct with where I am wiring in the inline fuse in my crudest of diagrams below - I have drawn where I think it should go in red. I also noticed that my bilge, stern and nav lights dont have any inline fuses, should I be adding them in? Thanks Mick
  15. Hi fellas, I am tidying up some wiring and fitting new plug for my stern light. From my dash swith it appears to be 7.5A thickness. My new socket has 18AWG stamped on it. Should i be running the same all the way to the switch? Or is it safe to join the smaller diam from the switch to the larger diam of the socket? Cheers Mick Ps as you would have gathered im not too 12v savvy haha
  16. 13.4m boat.......pretty sure he will have deep pockets
  17. Just finished removing the old hds10 gen2, lss2 module all wiring/cabling and both transducers........cant wait to install the new sounder

  18. During the 80s, being born in 1978, my old man taught me to fish. Dont remember the exact date, but I do remember I received my first daiwa combo, my own rod and reel and my first tackle box, for christmas in 1988. That entire Christmas day was spent with Dad teaching me how to tie knots and make up rigs ready for boxing day. Thanks Mum and Dad
  19. Should be like seat belts in a car either when on a boat or rock fishing. I rarely notice I have mine on when I boat alone.
  20. Mark, your a legend....show me all i needed to know. Ill stick with navionics, just do the trade up thing with my old card
  21. Yeah they all say that the AI tranny is compatible, but not at the moment....the update shouldnt be too far away. I have changed my mind from the carbon with total scan to the live series with the AI tranny
  22. Was going to buy a carbon unit, of the 12 variety as I don't want to downsize from my hds10 gen 2 display size. The carbon's have been discontinued anyway, but some shops still have them. Over the weekend went looking and have decided on the 12 live with the AI 3 in 1 tranny. I figured if I'm spending close to 3k may as well chip in the extra 1k and it will be the most current. Will be making my purchase before xmas, hopefully in the next couple of weeks. I would hold off until next year for the Rosehill boat show - better deals, but I have a week long Mulloway trip planned well before then and want it beforehand so I can learn it a little better. The gen 2 hds10 with lss2 (no mapping card) will be for sale soon fellas 😉, but I wont be giving it away. Was going to advertise it well less than a $1000......keen to hear what you guys think of pricing for my old unit actually?
  23. I was down there last weekend with my mate and my old man. We got 12 flathead ranging from 30cm to 47 cm. We also caught a 30somethingcm flounder and a 47cm tailor. Not bad for a hour an a half's fishing then the wind came up so we called it a day. We had work to do on my old man's caravan anyway, so we wouldn't have been out much longer really, just good to get out on the water with my father. He was stoked since he doesn't fish plastics that often and still pulled in 3 flatties and that tailor. My mate and I were guiding him, telling him where to cast and how to retireve. We were fishing with 2-5kg rods, 2500 sized reels with 4-8lb braid and 8 lb leader. All fish were released unharmed. We were on the boat and were just drifting around using plastics in 3-5m of water just around the corner from the vehicle ferry towards nowra bridge casting towards the rock wall.
  24. Im sure I saw this boat with a transom door at the rosehill boat show.....or was it the next size up? I cant remember now. I know I really checked out this boat - anglapro 484 sniper at that show, it would be a perfect upgrade for me....one day, as I would have to extend my garage to fit it in first haha
