  1. Hello raiders.... This morning, for those that reside in Sydney, will know that there was plenty of rain throughout the day.... Rain, hail or shine, my friend and I are keen for a fish and don’t allow the weather to scare us.... Using my usual setup (2-4kg rod, 4 lb MONO line, small eggbeater, 3g jig head, plastics) we started landing the usual suspects.... All of a sudden, I was on and I knew it was something solid... The first run said it all, followed by another good dozen runs, I started to lost plenty of line.... Obviously at this stage i started to worry and questioned myself "will i ever pull this thing out of the water and will it cut through my 4lb line???".... I managed to avoid being spulled, and the small reel was working overtime and was screaming like hell..... Thinking it would tire after 10min i tightened the reel and started to pull the brick towards me... Felt like dead weight, especially on light gear.... The 4 lb MONO line was being pushed to its limits, and this was evident by the squealing sound (maybe wind factor) coming from the line being tightened and stretched.... There were plenty of hairy moments using this technique just to land the fish..... FINALLY I managed to pull it up to the boat and seeing it was a Kingy i had the biggest smile from one ear to another... ANOTHER hairy moment was when my mate managed to miss on numerous occasions, landing the fish in the net, a total of x3 times… Think he was doing it on purpose…. After a few photos and realising it was only 60cm, it was released to live another day.... Hope it will survive, had to cut the line since it swalloed the whole plastic/jig head....
  2. HEHEHEH, it did not cross my mind that a trout would eat a rat/mice let alone have over a dozen in its belly .... I was keen to eat the NZ trout sushimi/sushi style, BUT had to think about it twice To tell you the truth i was dissapointed with the Salmon fight on light gear, must be the cold water being 10 degrees celcius COLD that slowed it down....
  3. @ Floating_Medic - HAHHAHAHAHA, I actually do the same thing (catch a grasshopper ) when lures fail to catch me a trout..... @ jewgaffer - Thanks for the response, I love all sorts of fishing as long as I am out of the house NOW that I am not working full time, i am making an effort to enjoy life a bit more and go fishing (where ever it may take me), so if anyone out there needs a fellow fishing buddy, I’m up for it .... @ bloopin - Its private property mainly farmers, but many fisherman and campers go either way...... Sometimes, depending where we go, we have to call the owner so he can grant us access (don’t want him releasing those HUGE dogs on us)..... BUT majority of the time, as long as you don’t leave any rubbish, don’t destroy the environment and don’t harass the stock all is well.... By the way keep an eye out on brown and red bellied snakes, my friend and I had several close encounters where we nearly stepped on some and one started chasing us (ONLY in Australia will a snake chase a human) …
  4. Thought i might contribute
  5. My 80cm flatty next to my girls doggie......
  6. WOW, some nice Kingies.... Next time feel free to drop me a line so i can tag along
  7. Its been ages since i last posted.... Sorry for neglecting, but never too late to share stories.... All fish below were caught using a light 4-6kg rod, with a 4-6lb mono line, with a 6-8lb mono leader (depending on weather,water/tide etc).... For blades & hard bodied lures i use a 8lb braid fireline, no leader.... Went to New Zeland, South Island for a 2 week fishing/surfing/snorkling trip with a good friend of mine... He grew up in NZ, but never went fishing, strange!!! In our travells we stayed in Christchurch, Rangoura, Broken River, Hokitika, Kaikora .... Managed to fish for trout in many rivers, streams, lakes etc BUT I must say the weather was not on out side... The Melbourne storm that destroyed majority of the city managed to make its was to where we were staying... As a result it snowed on us 3 days (unexpected)... We did not have any snow gear and we froze our nockers off... Many days spent fishing were wet, windy, and COLD...... We retired early each day to go back to the batch and warm up with some turps.... First time to fly fishing and i must say i pulled up ok.... Very frustrating though, as you have to watch out for rocks, trees, shrubs, wind factor, waves, water movement and the unexpected things that go wrong, such as hooking yourself As a result i went back to what im good at and managed to score a few with my eggbeater..... Broken River - Caught half a dozen of Rainbow Trout 51cm Rainbow Trout (mind you this is small for a NZ trout) 51cm Rainbow Trout Managed to land my first Salmon Yummmy, who feels like sushi/sushimi, especially after a trout has eaten over a dozen mice.... Of course Trout dont always eat mice, Not when rat is on the menu!!!!! Hit the local Waimak River in Christchurch for the SAlmon run and managed a beauty.... Approx 8kg/16pounds... Met a few locals where we we staying, Went diving for some local lobster (crayfish) and abalone Not bad for a few hours of work... Spent days eating lobster for breakfast, lunch and dinner.... MAssive abalone (paua).... http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/4378/newzelandfishingtrip434.jpg Sushimi lobster http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/4435/newzelandfishingtrip440.jpg Lobster morney my style http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/5138/newzelandfishingtrip490.jpg Went rock, hopping/fishing, amongst cutting our feet on the sharp rocks we managed to pull out dozens of local OZ salmon... Beutiful eating; raw salmon, mixed with fresh vegies and coconut cream... http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/6624/newzelandfishingtrip472.jpg http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/2690/newzelandfishingtrip476.jpg
  8. THE ENTRANCE 1-4-2010 I took a few friends of mine to show them how to fish using soft plastics and hard bodied lures.... After 2 hrs they all gave up and wanted to go home.... Typical!!!! By the way, i caught ALL the catch, even though they were using the same rods, line, lures etc.... Not bad for a 2 hr session... THE ENTRANCE 21-4-2010 (Before the long weekend) Long Weekend was around the corner, so instead of buying fish for the tribe, why not go and catch some... Promising a mate of mine to take him fishing, i once again found myself at the Entrance, teaching a Rookie how to fish using soft plastics and hard bodied lures... It was so funny watching begginers, and i kept on asking myself the same question, "was i that bad?" During my demonstration he was very happy and glad to land x2 good flatties.... He was surprised that fish can be caught without using "prawms" Once i left his side, i managed to pick up the rest.... Catching, releasing, missing strikes, being bitten off, left right and center... He failed to catch another fish and due to his frustration, we left after 4hrs of fishing.... Flatties around the 40cm mark... Estuary Perch ranging from 34-37cm Oberon 24-4-2010 My brother and i decided to take our dad to Oberone, for a hike along the stream to catch a few trout, catch dinner, exercise and loose a bit of our excess luggage in time for the snow season... Caught over 20+ trout but only kept x3 as the rest were under size but still a fun day out...
  9. Went to Botany Bay numerous times and managed to crack a few PB.... Slowely we are learning how to use the boat, since im more of a land based fisherman... The usual suspects were caught in Botany; bream, flatties, trevalley, snapper, even a leather jacket and a flounder... All fish below were caught using a light 4-6kg rod, with a 4-6lb mono line, with a 6-8lb mono leader (depending on weather,water/tide etc).... For blades & hard bodied lures i use a 8lb braid fireline, no leader.... Now, its time to catch live bait (squid/yellowtail), and go for Jewfish, Kingies etc.... My first snapper 32cm.... First descent flatty in Botany Bay... My first Tarwin 32cm.... My first Bonito.... My first Leather Jacket 39cm.... My first flounder with a mixed bag... New PB, 38cm bream Cracked my PB again, with a 39cm bream Mixed bag, the photo does not do the bream any justice
  10. Thanks guys….. Every visit at this place i have excellent results..... Never came back home empty handed…. Will be going back there on Thursday if the weather is good…. NOW i need to find a place where i can get similar results BUT fishing for Jewies.... Good to hear I’m not the only one…. I kept it and threw it on the BBQ the next day.. Luv eating them…..
  11. YESTERDAY my brother and I decided to go for a night flick @8pm (last minute decision) and score some fatties. Our plan was to catch as many as we can, and BBQ the fish the next day to feed the tribe. The weather was our enemy. It was overcast, scattered showers, moon was nowhere to be seen by the cloud cover, winds were 20-30km/h and the place we went to was a bit of a drive. I was hesitant to go. After reading a few charts/graphs and my brothers constant nagging, I decided why not. On the way it started to rain and immediately I got a cold shiver. My smile was wiped of my face. On arrival, to my surprise the rain stopped, the wind died right down and not a ripple on the water to be seen. Pelicans starting to emerge, there was commotion in the water and I had a good feeling. By this stage I was in a rush to get my gear ready and flick the first cast into the water. Throughout the whole night, the sound of screaming reels filled our ears with fun and laughter. Other fisherman surrounding us started to worry. They even commented and wondered to themselves what they were doing wrong. We even exchanged fishing spots, to give them a go, but luck was not on their side. On the other hand, luck on our side was a different story. We managed to catch 35+ flathead from which we kept 17. Average size was around the 40-42cm mark. In addition were caught 10+ Estuary Perch, from which we kept 2. Biggest one for that night was @37cm. BOY they are fun fighting fish for their size. Further we caught way to many Taylor which demolished our soft plastics and hard bodied lures. Threw them all back. Also which I found a bit bizarre, is that same session my brother managed to catch an Octopus on a hard bodied lure. I have never heard or witnessed such a thing. I’m bedazzled and can’t get over it. Has anyone else experienced this? Five minutes later I was on, thinking I was pulling out the biggest Flathead in the world and it turned out to be another Octopus. This one was caught on a soft plastic. I guess the type of lures/plastics you use, and the way y ou work your rod really matters. HAHAHHA, can i submit the below photo in the "Lure fishing Record"?
  12. JEBUS, thats a wopper..... Thanks for the detailed write up.... MONSTER of a fish, congrats.... EVERYONE seems to be murdering the Georges River Jew's.... Still a virgin, BUT will be trying my luck, for the first time this coming Thursday morning.... ALSO it will be my first time on the Georges, drifting and hopefully flicking plastics with success.... ANY hints where to flick these smelly plastics or hard bodied lures locatin vise.... Stewy (swordfisherman) interested in joining the virgins Ive been reading heaps of reports (few ideas of where to go) BUT my friend and i are unfamiliar with the Georges River....
  13. NICE report, thats a monster of a LIZARD.... AND a jew fish..... SO JELOUS!!!!
  14. Im pretty sure its a BASS, but the taste was EXCELLENT... My favourite fish to eat over a charcoal BBQ.... The flesh is fatty and once cooked whole on the BBQ it stays moist and the meat falls of the bone.... YUMM Many river fish such as Yellow Belly, Red Fin, Perch, Bass, EP etc are fatty fish and once thrown on the charcoal BBQ (whole) they taste so delicious and buttery....
  15. GOOD NEWS and well done.... Im hoping to do the same sooner or later and land a Kingy...
  16. Hey fellas, i totally forgot i posted up this thread.... @Goony, the other day i threw a Snapper on the BBQ, and like you i hogged the snapper to myself The big fella is a silver drummer.... Some dislike eating this fish, BUT i dont mind.... The smaller ones are bass/ep, still dont know the difference.... Cooking FLATHEAD using this method is AMAZING... Cooking any fish this way will work.... ACTUALLY Ozzy Salmon i have tried once and NEVER again, texture was a bit funny, like eating rubber.... GENERAL RULE with BBQ fish, just make sure you consume it immediately as many of you know, once the fish cools down it become a bit tough/chewy.... I left out a BIG SECRET with this RECEPIE.... With the garlic, parsley, olive oil, salt & pepper mixture... Make sure you BUY and add a generous load of VEGETA...
  17. I knew that guys just testing you all, jokes....... Thanks for editing the post.....
  18. Hello raiders, apologies for being a stranger to the forum (busy fishing).... Went to Jindy for 3 weeks (skiing) and only managed to squeeze a couple of days fishing for trout.... I was desperate to beat my PB and BOY did i have a ball..... First day, caught my PB brown trout @49cm (Rapala Lure).... Second day a new PB @50cm (Rapala Lure) followed by a 55cm MONSTER (Tassy devil)..... To my dissapointment the fish did not put up a fight at all, must be the cold water.... Few times headed up the entrance and caught the usual Flathead, Taylor and even sting rays on soft plastics.... BOY they are fun to catch, never seen my rod flex so hard or heard my reel screem so loud.... One particular day i was left speechless as x2 BIG flatties managed to snap my braid line... BOTH of the flatties put up a good fight considering i had a 2kg rod with 4 poud braid..... ALL i saw was the tail come up in the shallows and slamed the water 3-4 tmes..... Other days my freinds and i hit the Botany Bay a couple of times.... We are NEW to the whole fishing from the boat thingy so still learning.... We are AMATEURS but as long as we are out of the house, we dont care if we come home empty handed.... Managed to get x5 BIG squid (Squid jigs), X15+ Port Jack's on fresh squid and a Snapper.... NOTHING on plastics or hard bodied lures YET.... 49cm RainbowTrout 55cm & 50cm Brown Trout
