  1. I'm not up to date on the latest Loomis offerings, although I'ld love to have the Metolious 13'4 troutspey Ive got a few older ones, a GLX, an IMX, and a GL3, they are all great rods but I bought them after test casting them and they suited me, for instance, I didnt like the 9' GLX but fell in love with the 9'6, both in 7 wt Buying expensive flyrods has become a thing of the past with a new small family. Best advice is have a cast of the rod and try a few others and see which you like. Regards Pogo

    Agm Batteries

13.8 sounds high, how long had it been off the charger? A good way to test it is to test it under load, charge it up, take it out for a fish and check what the voltage is as it sits in the boat then run the MK flat chat, should draw about 40-45 Amps and check the voltage again under load to see what sort of voltage drop you are getting, I've only ever done this by disconnecting the ignition leads on a petrol motor and running the starter, I dont know if the maximiser will spin out your multimeter From the 12V bible for boats Battery at rest, gretaer than 12.6v 100%, 12.4v 75%, 12.2 v 50%, 12.0v 25%, 11.7 or less flat battery Under starter motor load if the voltage drops to less than 9.6v the battery is due for replacement. How many cycles do you reckon you have got out of the battery, they should be good for at least 200 and some of the better ones will exceed 300 and thats supposed to be fully charged to flat (11.7v)
  3. For Jews on the beach, Learn to catch worms fresh tailor slabs or butterflied second with worms try a normal running sinker on your mainline , swivel, 30-50 cm trace with one of those clear plastic trout fishing bubble floats (the one with the hole through the centre) then the hook, 3/0 to 5/0 depending on the size of the worms, this will cast ok and will lift the worms up out of the reach of the sand crabs
  4. Got to be in it to win it Put me in the hat thanks Ken, I'll buy you beer at the Xmas Social if I win, (Heh Heh, bidding process started, lets see who really wants em)

    Four Or Two Stroke

Have a look at the Suziki DF 140, thats the one I am saving up for, weighs the same as a Yammie 115 and two blokes I know who use them on commercial boats (north of Cairns) rave aboutthem Also I think that site sponsor Yabbie Marine can cut you a good deal on them
  7. Woo Hooooo, boat's looking good ken
  8. the devil is in the fine detail, The exclusions and times let a hell of a lot of netting go on
  9. Got another one for you Richie, If you catch the train to Cowan, you can walk down to the end of Jeruselem Bay, Beatiful spot and some good Land based fishing around the sandflat drop off and along the little creek channel if the tide is high, SPs would work down there, we used to carry in a yabby pump. If you have a bit of a look around you will find some fantastic spots to camp if you want to put in an overnighter. A mate and I used to do it a lot in the early 80s and always got a few fish, carry in a Grilling frame, fresh bream cooked over the coals is unreal. Regards POGO

    Transducer Angle

D'oh, Of course you are right jewel, lower frequencies penetrate better than High, sorry about that. The minute I reread my post I spotted the obvious error. regards Pogo

    Transducer Angle

Angle might be a problem, but if its off by too much youll get a incorrect depth reading all the time, you can check this by using a chart and the gps to check the depth, another problem can be the angle your boat sits at different speeds, if your trolling at a speed where the boat sits up at an angle this can fire the sounder pulse forwards and at certain speeds the pulse from the transducer hits the bottom and reflects further forwards ( think like a cushion shot playing pool) and doesnt get picked up by the transducer on its return cause the signal comes to the surface in front of the boat, this is usually only a problem in deep water 200 Mhz is the best for deep water, the pulse penetrates better and if you check your manual you will probably find that the 200 Mhz pulse is at a 10 or 12 degree cone angle where the 50 Mhz signal is at 30 to 40 degrees cone angle, this wider angle means that the pulse doesnt penetrate as far, or is dispersed faster if you like the old 1 in 60 rule works, with the 10 degree cone angle your sounder is generating a pulse that will be about 10 metres wide at 60 mtres, 20 at 120, 30 at 180 etc, whereas the 50 Meg transducer will be 30 at 60 etc you can run this rule on where the signal ends up as well. if your boat is sitting up at say a 6 degree angle( compared to sitting level) as youre trolling, the signal will reflect off the bottom at 12 degrees so the core of the signal will return to the surface 12 metre ahead of the transducer in 60 metres depth, 24 in 120 and 36 mtres!!!! ahead in 180 mtres. If your boat sits 12 degrees nose up at trolling speed the core of the signal hits the surface 72 meters in front of the transducer If you can trim to stay level you might should be able to hold the signal better. Hope all this makes sense, its easier to explain with a pen and table napkins and beer Regards Pogo
  19. G'day Dave, I am tring to send you a PM and the system says your PM is full or turned off Regards POGO

  22. Apart from the inclement weather I reckon every body had a great time, Pedro's Surgical skills and Joes very impressive first aid kit were not recquired. Many thanks to George (Bluecod) for putting in the hard yards doing the organising and then setting up the Fishraider Pavillion to keep the rain off us as we chatted. Thanks also to Mick from ABA for their support and the great outfit. Good luck with it Lightweight, hope to see a report with some fly caught bass from St Clair. Got a couple of great fly tying ideas from Alexit, and was very impressed with his flyrod case ( a stunning looking home built wooden case with brass clips and hinges) Thanks to all of those who patiently listened to me trying to explain the unexplainable, ( how to get the fly from here to over there) Hope I was able to help you out with my tips, just remember guys its all in the speed up and stop Once again thanks to bluecod
  23. Yep BC, they dye OK, the first time I went to NZ I had a Triangle taper in Ivory and organised a guide for two days to get the good oil, after the first hour or so the guide insisted I fit one of his reels with an olive line, I didnt think it cast any were near as well as the bright shiny NEW (expensive) TT Any way when we packed up for the day the kiwi gude says, "Guv us yer ril, u'll tek ut hum en fux ut up" The next day he gives me back my reel with the ivory TT now a muddy brown olive colour for about the first 30 feet, "Line flush, uts no gud, puts the fush down whun your custen" he says Ive since read somewhere how to do it but I cant recall where at the moment I later wrecked that line by getting it caught in an outboard Ive also been told that the grey cortland 444sl is one of the kiwi guides favourite lines, the same colour as the fighter jets and aerial refuelling aircraft and navy ships---- No flash He also took the piss out of me, he reckons that Aussie fishos spend to much time looking at their feet and not enough scanning the water. I told him he needed to step on a few filthy angry serpents and then he might be more concerned where he was putting his size 13 gumboots. A couple of the funniest days of fishing Ive had,
