  2. Thanks Geoff, The transducers I am looking at are a dedicated thru hull transducer, you drill a hole thru the hull and the bronze transducer fits thru the hole from the outside and has about a two inch flange type nut that screws down and is used with the approriate sealant, dont imagine it would fall out. really interested if you get a better signal at speed with the transducer located on the centre line of the boat about two to three feet ahead of the stern, where it would stay in "clean water" longer and at higher speeds my current transducer is located on the transom mor than 3/4 of the way out and gets interference pretty quickly as I speed up, the boat is a tri or cathedral hull so it has to be out there or really close to the motor
  3. Looking at fitting a new sounder to the Pogoboat ANy one got any opinions on the differences between transom mount and thru hull transducers. I knoe thru hull will involve drilling a hole through the hull to fit it, I dont really have a problem with that and might even prefer it comparred to drilling and screwing into the transom wall as regards to getting rot in the transom at some point. Im really more interested in wether you get a better result, as regards the performance of the unit with thru hull against transom, particularly on the move Regards Pogo

    Deck Wash

My Shurflow is going ok Intake MUST be filtered and an accumulator is a good idea, I only use mine for Deck wash, not as a combined deck wash live well pump be careful if you head down that route as most deckwash pumps are not rated for continuous use Go Stainless for the pickup if you can I bought mine as a kit, pump, hose and filter from the states through Ebay, for about 220 US inc surface ship and got the accumulator and hoses and fittings from whitworths then fitted it myself, mounted pump close to second battery in stern and used a bosch relay from a auto shop(for spotlights) to wire it in so I wasnt running a long wire with 10-15 amps running through it.
  5. I use vanish in 4, 8, 14, PENN 10x in 20 40 No probs with the vanish, I bought the 300 m spools of vanish and they are a couple of years old now Question, Does FC deteriorate the way Nylon does, Sunlight UV etc Basically what Im asking is should I ditch the current lot and buy new before I start running into probs
  6. Originally was going to go out with a mate and his Brother in Law to have a downrig for kings, but they got the weights put on for a family picnic so the plan was changed to an short early session with them in Daves boat and me in mine and I organised another deckie. Got out to West head about 6 ish and berleyed up a cloud of Yakkas and Slimies, had 3 slimies and 5 yakkas in the tank when Dave showed up in his boat "Cheese Machine" ( Yep there's a story there). Grabbed a few more livies and then rafted up to transfer my rodholder mount downrigger to Daves boat and a quick briefing on rigging and tactics. Headed around to SE corner Barrenjoey, it was a bit like Pitt St with a bunch of boats, drifting and Anchored. Dave and Jon trolled for about 5 mins and got a nice King about 62cm. Heh Heh so much for all that, "shit this stuff wont work" attitude another kingie cherry popped. We trolled around for another 40 mins or so and hadnt had a hit so we decamped and went down to fish along the rocks at North whale. We got three down there, 1 keeper for my mate, funnily enough all on the free swimming livie that we were trolling with just a 3 inch barrel sinker on the line ahead of the trace. No fish on the downrigger at all, Dont know if the fish were a bit boat shy after 4 days of being hit up and the longer drop back on the free swimmer (about 20-30 m) was the trick. Or if the fish were a bit leader shy and the 50kg trace on the downrigger bait was putting them off, compared with the 20kg trace on the freeswimmer. Anyway Justin ,my deckie, is not a kingie virgin any more either, He used to be a proffessional chef big time, Bilsons etc, and had my mouth watering as he described what he was going to do to prepare his fish for the table for his In Laws. Dave and Jon headed back for a final troll around Barrenjoey before picking up their wifes and kids at 9.30 for a picnic day at the basin. They hit a little purple spot as they got another good one on a trolled SP and said that the two boats near them all got a fish at the same time. Back home by 10.30 ( which scored some brownie pts towards the next outing). Great fun day had by all, although Dave says he is not giving my Downrigger back, I was grizzling to Justin as we were trolling BArrenjoey that we should have been onto the fish more and felt we should have picked up a couple more at Whale, As we were unloading the boat at Bayview he passes his bag down to me, its unzipped, and WHAT DO I SEE, sitting in the top A BANANA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A Swift uppercut was applied and the realities of fishing with Banana Boy explained. Regards POGO
  7. Sorry Gianniz None of those excuses work if youre caught by fisheries. If its undersize you have to put it back, live or bleeding or dead. Legally you cant even use undersize fish as live bait. Just a shame we dont see more fisheries officers at places like Avoca where plenty of offences are committed, They love blatting around in their big boat rather than wearing out a pair of shoes
  8. Merry Christmas to all And hoping you all have a great New Year with plenty of fishy action Regards Pogo
  9. Thanks Nick and the tying team Love getting nice flies Regards Pogo

    Wat To Do

Had a mate that used to do that on a dual axle trailer Know what happens You come back and find that another wheel is gone. Some p@##k who wants a spare for his trailer says "shit look someones pinched one already, Ill have one too" The other thing to remember is that its not much point using a hitch lock if you have a removeable tow bar Heard a story about one getting pinched where they just took the trailer towbar section and all Clampits work and the motor cycle cable is a good idea
  12. My two bobs worth would be, Fish with the reels set with strike drag, 1/3 lines breaking strain and load the rods so they are bent with the weight of the bomb give the downrigger releases the flick and use rubber bands instead And the real sneaky one use a sliding snell on the front hook and run a treble as a stinger for slow trolling (dead idle) I dont worry about bridling, Yakkas seem to last pretty well just hooked up through from underneath the jaw and out through the top of the nose and place one hook of the treble just under the skin beside the vent. For smallish yakkas Im using a Mustad hoodlum in 5/0 ( which is actually quite a small hook for a 5/0 ) as the tow hook and No 2 Chem sharp trebles, the red one from gamatsu I think. Important that the tow hook doesnt have an offset cause that seems to make the bait more likely to spin You'll find most kingies hooked on the treble, I think they hit the yakkas amidships which is why when you troll with a bridle you miss a lot of hits, they get the yakka in thier mouth but dont hook up, and its suprising how long they'll play tug of war up until the bridle snaps regards pogo
  13. Sounds like you had a great time, Good report You can create some amazing looking SP's from the chunks of the left overs from tailor toads and LJackets All you need is sharp scissors, super glue and your imagination the front end of a Hawg or bug ant with a BM tail is a special on Mr Lizard

  19. I have a mariner 125, when i bought the Pogoboat the previous owner said that he had replaced the either oiltank or sender switch for low quantity because of the symptoms you describe Might be a job for the service guys
  20. AHAAAAA You beauty, last minute leave pass, I must be driving up the wall, she turned round about half an hour ago and said why dont you go fishing tomorrow. So Bayview ramp with my mate and his son, quick troll for tailor, stop at Basin for poddies and a drift from Patonga to Lion Island with a weather eye out for surface action. If we dont do any good at that maybe a run with the downrigger for kings. Heh heh off to pack up the gear
  21. Theres a thread somewhere on here about what makes a good deckie (deckhand) Have a read of that and you'll be totally up to speed on how to be good company when you get an invite on someones boat, plenty of guys take out non boat raiders Also keep an eye on the desperate and boatless thread there are often blokes looking for company Deckie spot are also usually available at the Fish raider socials that come up from time to time Regards POGO
  22. There seems to be a lot of cheap fly gear around at the moment, particularly in trout weights I think a bit of the "River Somewhere" yuppy flyfishing market is drying up and a few of the tackle importers have been caught with too much stuff on their hands.

    Fishing On Dams?

Yeh, I have fished Clarrie Hall, and its electric only, in fact I think you can not even have a petrol fitted
  24. Yep yep yep, I'm a risk it all kind of guy, you were playing with the pride and joy, a 7wt 9'6 Loomis GLX, I hope never ever finds out how much it cost me, none of her business really I got it when I was a single fella and justified it by telling myself I would spend less time at the pub. I actually did for a while until the laminated loanshark was paid off.
  25. I've tied four so far, I might have to keep the first two, they are a bit ratty, they are coming out better after each one I guess that means Ive really only tied two But I'll have em done by the end of the weekend Regards POGO
