  1. am looking at this also, but can someone enlighten me. two versions 50/200 kHz and 83/200 kHz. 50 kHz one is more expensive, but is there any advantage in the lower frequency?
  2. Thanks guys, the seating came about when i put a seat on an sky to get the height right, ,,,,,,,,then the little light came on over my head, why install pedistal seats and find somewhere to put the esky. Took a bit of time to find the right one, the seats are on locking swivels. The trailer is 60% new. I am really pleased with it all the windscreen is great, you could put a candle on the dash, scary moment folding the acrylic though, a one chance thing!
  3. after a lot of work, tarrrah! it's ready [:946] dunno if the picture works though
  4. an inflatable one, but like a waistcoat to put on, 'waistcoat' could be net like a string vest to keep you cool, but easier to put on than a strap thing, zip up the front, belt around the waist, waterproof pockets as suggested. maybe ready fitted straps to take a gimbal, click into place and wind em in. stylish so you don't look like a dork, something you would want to wear. some places to put logos for those who do want to look like a dork. An overjacket with pleats for the float bags to open into. Zips over the top of the pfd, to keep you dry or warm in the winter. some work jackets are like this with a zip in body warmer, make the body warmer the PFD..., two or 3 different style/function overjackets as optional extras. wooly and warm, thousand pockets, etc care must be taken to ensure the ripcord is accessible at all times though.
  5. I watched a fisheries officer nab an extended family who were taking box loads of urchin off Bass Point. chatting to the officer later she recons the bag for urchins is way, way way to low as the urchins are in plague proportions and are destroying the weed bed habitat all along the coast. habitat for lobsters crabs and many fish species. having had a snorkel about I tend to agree, plenty of scarred and bare rock where the weed used to be, and clusters of many many urchins. put limit for urchins up to between 60 and 100 for a year and monitor it. any spear fishos or lobster divers care to comment? Also with the expense and time of towing a boat from Orange to the coast, damn right I want a decent bag, I can only get out every 6 or seven weeks, and don't like freshwater fish
  6. just installed one myself, the top outlet must flow downwards...unless you want to keep pumping the boat out .....Tip, for those awkward installations, like mine, the routing of the drain was very tight bend, couldn't connect up without kinking the tube, so..... went to a verycheap car parts store and found a radiator hose that was the right shape when trimmed down. fitted and works a treat.... .
  7. Back in blighty as a kid, we always used coloured feathers in the sea, wether bottom bouncing or going for pelagics, some used sand eels until rubber ones came on the market. I once caught a good sized Pollock with some stainless steel lathe swarfe that I put on a hook as a joke, and got an instant good cod on reaching the bottom with a rubber prawn that was an aquarium ornament. 'bait' went in lobster pots or on longlines. Bait has its uses, like beach fishing where you cast and wait, but I always put a gillies surf popper on above the pillie when fishing off the beach, 90% of the catches are on the popper, but maybe the pillie puts a scent out to attract and the popper looks better. far fewer catches with the popper only, or pillie only. good days catch though ay........pirate
  8. Thanks Guys,I measured from Bow tip to top of transom, and NJ & Huey, I think you are spot on, I Googled a bit on Brookers, and a lot of the features and details match the Discovery 5.0, mine would be a much earlier version or similar, the sides are clinker ribbed not smooth, as it the bottom, but basically the same. Now the work starts on a refurb, tig up a couple of cracks and then a clean down and squirt of paint, and build some sort of console arrangement, bimini, figurehead etc. will run a topic on the rebuild. thanks again Guys....Pirate
  9. Hi Geoff, 4.97 Mtrs, just measured it. I figured about 50hp as a maximum
  10. I am looking at this boat, and cannot determine what make it is, its 5 mtrs, the rego gives no make but sea line as a model. Discussions have it as a Clarke, or a Quintrex, I favor the latter as I am sure I have seen the transom braceing before on a quinnie. Can anyone help with information? I need to size a motor for it, and don,t want to over horsepower it. 2.1 Mtrs across the transom. Thanks guys, Pirate
  11. During an afternoons drifting off Bass Point i picked up about 8 floats, mostly with the rigg still on. I guess they were either bad knots, or casting with the bale arm down (we've all done that ay) also picked some off the shore along there, along with some nice lures, in amongst the blue bottles. someone will find the one i lost there on saturday, yep bale arm again, pertwack! lol
  12. I just done my inspections yesterday, and it depends what make and model of jacket you have. my axis co2 does not have an expiry date but must be weighed to see if it is still full. given that there should be no wear and tear on a brand new jacket, i believe that the date of purchase is when you start the time from. you should mark the purchase date on the test tag, and if possible keep the reciept or test certificate in sealable bag packed in the jacket that is my understanding anyway, feel free to correct me if i am in error. cheers, PIRATE
  13. Thanks Huey, I actually managed to haggle down to $350, 2 years old, and from a known reputable person, a steal at that price, that made up my mind as i have now have a good sounder and as you say i can get a gps/plotter to add to it as i can afford it. combos save space and clutter but singles give a better choice. i was in the industry 30 years ago in marine electronics for commercial vessels, mainly kelvin hughes, atlas, furuno, decca, ferrograph. (MS44 was a brute of a sounder, 3kw, depth in Kms). got a lot of catching up to do but essentially not a lot of change except the price, size, interfaceing and a screen instead of scorched paper and a smell of ozone.
  14. I am offered a furuno fcv 620 for 600 bucks, but whilst this is a good sounder, it is only a sounder/fishfinder. What else would 'raiders' recommend for 600 bucks-ish, that would give plotter GPS facilities as well as a good sounder (Max 750)
  15. Hi All, I'm spending the holidays around Bateman Bay , is there much fishing action happening around there at the moment?, I'm shore based.
  16. the media is really getting to chew on this, some pollie will want to make his name soon. question, which would you prefer 1, compulsory wearing of lifejackets whilst fishing from unfenced rocks or 2, rock fishing ban 3,personally i would go for a volentary code of wearing PFD's with a# stern advice leaflet with the licence and fishing guides
  17. something that doesnt help, is the tv fishing celebs, you very rarely see them wearing PFD's, wern't even wearing shirts the other day, but you didn,t see sunblock being applied, nor mentioned. i wounder if the sponors realize the bad habits. if you could design a 'macho' PFD that everyone would want to be seen in it would help. what is wrong with the inflatable ones, they are not bulky, not restrictive, and lets face it, cost less than a dozen decent lures (which if you are like me end up lost)these flash shirts with logos and manufacturers names all over cost more than a PFD. another problem is the age old image that most people have of the bulky block type PFD's and the chunky waistcoat type that would be hell on a hot day, even Worstlings kid looks like a michelin man with one on, not a good look
  18. Nothing worse than 'tinnyback' except maybe 'caught nothing' Most of the outdoor boating fishing warehouses seem to stock a range of seats, some folding, some fixed some padded. also clamps to fix them to bench seats and swivels and things painted or stainless, mix n match to suit your pocket. Not tried them or heard much about them but i daresay we would hear if they wernt much good. maybe visit when they are quiet, with your tinny and see if you can fit one and see how it feels. also look out for special offers. gotta be better than a crib room chair cut down and held on with self tappers like i had. Johnno
  19. be aware that if you fall over and the battery pack is too heavy, and you cant get the back pack off easy, you will go to the bottom on your back, not easy to turn over to stand, or to breath. personally i either use a side slung shoulder bag, or float the battery on a boogie board, in a placky bag gaffer taped onto it if you get a cheap boogie you can cut a bucket into it for the prawns
  20. you need to block the bottom end of the pvc, so it wont fill with cement, bit of gaffer tape would do
  21. Thanks Tony,I hate to point out these things, but with the recent sinkings (unrelated to mods i hope) it has to be mentioned or people could get into all sorts of strife. think of it like modding your boat is like modding your car, some things require engineering. I feel like I am peeing on someones campfire sometimes, sorry guys. (and the slipknot on the net cord is for easy release in a hurry if you need to steer, covering my own a#@) oh and yeah, shame such a hard earned catch was lost too
  22. Be careful about removing any seat which is full width of the boat and fastened to the sides, It is probably a part of the boats structural strength and if there were an accident, like the boat cracking or collapsing in a heavy landing in rough sea, also a lot of seats contain bouyancy, and altering the seating could affect the rated pasenger capacity. apart from the injury risk, the insurance company would have something to say and little to pay! life gets so dam technical these days. if the seat was already an 'island' seat it would be better. great idea though. You could also make a removable bracket to mount your esky 'over the side' whilst fishing, or tie the surplus cord from your net to the steering with a slip Knot as a reminder?..................Johnno
