  1. What a little champ!!!! Nice healthy looking bass. Next time im up that way, i'm gonna bring a yak and you can try to tow my fat ass around the dam.
  2. Good on you bud... I don't know about this well credentialed member though, he sounds like a knob! I got one 115cm the other night and lost an absolute beast. Unfortunately it was on stinky bait though.
  3. Won't be long before you nail a cracker... Put the hours in and its enevitable. Keep up the good work bud
  4. My my, what big hands you have..... Well done fellas, looks like a top day out.
  5. Congrats on a great first fish. Not many fish get the heart pumping like a mulloway, even a schoolie will get it racing. I would be concerened about consuming any amount of fish from those waters though. Especially in the quantity that a fish the size of a mulloway provides. While in small amounts the toxins will not cause any real issues in most people, however, they have an accumalitive effect. The more you consume the more chance of experiencing adverse and quite serious health concerens. I know some people will argue that fish move through out the estuary, and i agree with this theory. But the fish obviously feeds in the upper reaches where it would be exposed to potentially contaminated water and prey and judging by the dark colour of the fish it would indicate that the fish indeed spends the majority of its time in the upper reaches. http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0020/333218/georges-river-warning-sign.pdf Once again, congrats on a beautiful fish on light line.
  6. Have a look at the live fibre 7ft 10-15kg. 8ft might ba a bit awkward out of a yak.
  7. Doesn't sound very Jew like. Estuary cod are known to be caught as far south as sydney, are avid lure takers, grow to large proportions and could be a potential culprit.
  8. You'll be happy with the satiga surf overhead. Mine has dozens of beach jew to 20kg and plenty of big noahs under its belt and still going strong. keep in mind the beach is a pretty harsh place and i suggest you pull apart your reel regularly to give it a good clean and protect your investment. You might want to upgrade the drag too. Mine went to poop after a few good fish. My reel is the older model with no cast control. I'll be interested to hear how the new model casts. Another good overhead worth considering is the shimano torium. Great reel and half the price of the saltiga. As for the Salina. I have heard several reports for anti reverse issues with these reels. So do a bit of research before forking out your hard earned.
  9. Great post skip.. i love hearing of people being graced by the mighty green fish. They do seem to have something special about them. Well done Rob, i'm sure its the first of many to come your way. Skip, you may have to expect a visit from me and another ugly bugger from murwillumbah in the not too distant future.
  10. A mate of mine regularly catches jew on fly, his largest going 17kg. but keep in mind that this comes from many years of targeting jew on bait and lures and having an intimate understanding of the fish and thier patterns. He wrote an article on this same subject a few years ago in saltwater fishing. It is very possible but it is a rather difficult goal you have set yourself. As for soapies being found in the same places as mature fish. Juveniles have a very different dietry requirement to mature fish. so it is most likely that they will be feeding in different places and situations. learning these patterns is the real key to success. i do not believe mulloway exclusivley feed in the bottom third of the water column. They are a predator, and when actively hunting can be found anywhere from in amongst tailor schools in mid water to smashing mullet and gar off the surface, or found patroling a hole in 40ft of water.. and the next bloke to pull a 30kg jew out of a 6ft deep beach gutter wont be the first. I dont think mulloway take residence in one particuar part of an estuary, but rather roam using the influence of the tides and weather conditions to exploit particular feeding opportunities, where ever they may present themeselves. I believe most fish that are targeted and caught fishing deep holes ,are not necissarily because the fish are actively hunting these areas but because they are moving through. Like putting a cheese burger out on the road to maccas, some hungry bugger is not going to be able to go past it without having a nibble. Current and respite from that current, along with structure will hold bait, and at certain times predators will try to take advantages of these congrations of bait. So, observe, learn, understand and you will succeed. Good luck
  11. If you like to catch and release and care about the welfare of the fish you catch, then don't fish too light. In my yak I fish 'light' (10lb braid and 15lb leader)for Jew, cause you have the option of chasing them and getting them released quickly. Shore based I up the anti and fish either 20-30lb. Over exhausted fish don't release well, and if you do hook something 10kg + you'll be glad you had the extra authority.
  12. Thanks y'all. And a happy birthday to all the others who shared the same day
  13. I'm working in tassy for a few weeks. Even though i don't get the luxury of alot of time off i managed to throw a lure or two around this morning. I managed two Black Bream. the first one went 36 and the second 42. It was awesome sight casting to BIG bream in a foot of gin clear water. Getting them to bight was a differant story. Of the couple of dozen fish i cast to i got 3 hits and two hookups. Some of the fish would have been nudging 50 cms and were as thick as a beer can It was insane fishing! They are mega spooky in ankle deep water though. As the tide receaded, i moved to some deeper. I had a couple of follows by some truely monsterous bream, but inticing them to strike was a difficult as tempting their shallow water mates. i did get one hookup but it powered off and busted me up on some knarly mussel coved rocks without me getting a turn of the handle. I also came across a large sea run rainbow trout who must have had lock jaw. man, i wanna get one of them things.. I fished this spot for about an hour untill the sun was well and truely up, and managed no less than 36 flathead from 100m of shoreline. unfortunately the biggest only went a modest 36cm. but having never caught a sand flathead it was still a bit of fun. I will not have much in the way of good tides coinsiding with an opportunity to fish for a while, but i'll keep trying to crack the tassie code and keep y'all posted.
  14. The chunky tasmanian black bream are calling... Jeez i hate my job :P

Funny how you always go away when I'm coming to Sydney. Do I stink that bad?

  15. Thats increadably sad. My condolences to Denis and thier family. Sandra always looked after us so well. May she rest in peace
  16. I run mine on either a 4-6kg nitro magnumbutt or a 3-5kg nitro voodoo depending on if i'm yakkin it or landbased
  17. I've got a 2500 and fish 15lb to its limits. I've fished it hard on many jew, big carp and bass for 6 months with no issues. Nice and light, good drag. There is a bit of flex in the rotor when you crank the drag right up. I have no doubt it will pack it in after a while after the abuse i give it, but it is a good little reel for the price. Its about due for a strip down, i'll be interested to see the how the internals have stood up and how good the mag seal is.
  18. Not really your best option off the beach. They spin in the current, don't look natural and cause line twist issues. I assume your mullet are either small <15cm if so, they can only be used live, as the law states. Or big >30cms, Slab the big fellas
  19. Any fish that can eat a duck gets a tick in my book
  20. I wouldn't like to be swinging an FSU all day either. I think you will struggle to find a rod to satisfy both needs.... Two rods may be the answer Buy the jew rod now, you still have a few months to save before its tuna time. predator. I own a 30 slosh for spinning, calcutta 700B, Abu 7000 C3, Abu 10000 and a saltiga surf 30. The saltiga is the stand out. I can't praise it highly enough. I have been using it for three seasons of hard use and it still performs flawlessly. Why oh why did Daiwa stop making them
  21. I use my FSU5120 wilson supergraph O/H for casting(lobbing) live(legal) tailor and massive slab baits and 6oz star sinkers. It is a great rod for this work. My favorite O/H rod for jew would have to be my 13ft Nitro Messiah. It can still handle reasonable size slabs baits and sinkers, but gives me the ability to send baits into distant gutters when required. It is quite light also, which is appreciated during long nights. I also own and use, a BBE 10, a Penn Spinfisher 10ft and a 12ft Catana. But i keep opting for the FSU and Nitro. None of my o/h casting rods have pistol grips, nor do i think they need them. What reel are you looking at?
