  1. This time last year we started to get stuck into a few bonnies that were hiding within the restricted zone of clifton gardens, got myself some new rods this year with excellent casting capacity compared with the gear I had last year. Just wondering if anyone can give us the heads up as to whether or not the bonnies are over that way again yet? Haven't ventured over that side of the harbour just yet but keen to hook a few again for some sashimi !

  2. Indeed :biggrin2:

Frig man I went looking through your posts today at work (quiet day I know) to find a photo but you didn't post it up ?? That's a big Dollie for the fad they're usually alot smaller, what did you catch it on? Trolling or livey? We only managed undersized ones on soft plastics, had. 140mm squidgy flick bait getting smashed every cast

  3. HI Raiders,

Motored out around the heads this morning to a little reef GPS Mark I have - 25m of water.

Started cubing and within 1 hour the snapper started, just pannies around 40cm, landed 4 legal ones.

Put the squid JAGS down on a paternosta, landed good cuttlefish for bait and dinner.

Shortly after we hooked 2 SCHOOL SHARKS, around the 90cm mark. Kept 1 for dinner. Its amazing what starts coming around the boat when you cube and berley hard!

Nice work mate, one of those school sharks didnt happen to come pre-gaffed by any chance ? I hooked one on the weekend and it ripped the gaff out of my mates hand snapped the leader and swam away ! haha

  4. I don't know what the differences are but apparently the 3 is alot better than the 2, if you can afford the 3 I'd be going for it, looks alot cleaner in design as well.

If my rod does snap I'll just have to get a stronger one but I reckon should be all good

  5. Knowing the weather was a bit on te dodgy side decided to head out anyway as my mate is off overseas soon for a little while and we wanted to get in as many sessions as we can.

We started out getting yakkas and landed an absolute horse around 30cm which we kept for a slab bait, always ambitious tho I chucked him in the bait tank and told my mate I was gona send him out as a lively, his response, anything big enough to take that bait will explode your reel...hmmmm point taken !

On the way to have a quick squid we see schools of fish busting up in upper harbour flick lured at them but no luck troll through them and double hook up - we think anyway? No drag being pulled but pull the Ross out and were both onto tiny tailor.

Go have a quick squid and I mange to entice a baby one out of the beds gets on the jig and I watch it squirt ink do a 360 underwater and fall of !!! Couldn't find anymore so we bailed to north head. Saw something on the sounder and sent out livies but nothing so we pinned them trough the nose an trolled out towards the opening of the harbour, stopped right at the corner and our livies hit the bottom, go to wind it in an there's something pulling on both our livies, I slowly get my up cause it feels like a squid, and there Is a monster on my livey, he drops it a few times but keeps coming back for more, trying to slowly get him beside the boat but then all of a sudden it's ripped the yakka off before I can get it close enough to put a net behind it, meanwhile my mate has a cuttlefish that has swallowed everything, we cut that loose and make way for longreef.

Bit windy and choppy but not many boats out there, not alot happening at all few boats pulling in rats and we have out livies out which don't get touched, flicking a slick rig drop bear off the back of the boat I hook up, once again on my 6lb setup and by the time I get the rat king in the boat my shoulder is burning !

Other than that nothing happening out at longy, head out wide for a drift nothing on there except pickers, not even any flatties, catch a small gurnard and that's it.

Head back to north head and sit inside the head drifting some livies around and flicking these drop bear slick rig. All of a sudden my rod goes off ! Then just dead weight, doesn't feel like a king, bring it up and it'd a baby bronze whaler. Wanted to get it into the boat for a quick photo so my Kate grabs the gaff, gets a shot on the inside of the bottom jaw, shark doesn't like that thrashes around and rips the gaff out of his hand, cuts my leader with his teeth and swims off with our gaff in his mouth. Had enough so we go home.

We've had a pretty good run the last few months so we were probably due for a dud day soon. If anyone catches a shark with a 5/0 live bait hook and a gaff in its mouth please let us know ! Hahah

  6. Sweet Tom, just what I need to hear. I had a feeling it's generally ok to go over on the line class, but I didn't want to find out if it won't work by snapping the rod with the drag locked up on 50lb braid with a kingy making full steam for the bottom haha !

Apparently the salina 3's are even better than the 2's and even though I don't like the colours (my new rods are black with green on them) I can put up with miss matched colours if it means good fish !

What model have you got in ur salina 2?

  7. As per the title, had a look at these in a tackle shop today. They feel like a good reel and I like the idea of the lifetime warranty which is a really good peace of mind.

Will be using it for jigging an live baiting kings so the lower gear ratio is the one I'd look at.

The rods I will be matching it up with are

7ft 10-15 kg fiberglass & 5'6 6-12kg fiberglass for jigging (I know lighter weight rating but it'll be fine)

Will most likely run a bit of mono backing and 30kg braid UNLESS someone can advise me otherwise?

If I run 50LB braid (max drag is 24kg for this reel) will my line class be too strong for my Rods I am using? Or would I be safer running 30lb braid ? I don't really understand fully how the rod ratings effect the setup of the rods

And also feedback on okuma owners too please as they seem good value for money.

Not too keen on the stradic 8000 and saragossa is still in consideration if I don't go for the okuma

  8. I use a combination of the following sites. Once you get the gist of it you'll be able to predict the winds pretty well. The key is to check them every day, weather occurs in patterns usually and there are times when one or two of my sites I use will say something but I get a gut feeling for something else based on what I have seen over the last week and generally I get it right. I surf so I've been looking at these for years, easily applied to fishing

Seabreeze - sometimes gets it a little bit wrong but most of the time OK. Long range outlook is more of an indication than anything about 2-3 days out is pretty accurate. It's updated regularly so check morning/afternoon to see changes

    http://www.seabreeze.com.au/graphs/nsw.asp

BOM Wind - Only goes as far south as Kurnell but it gives you a really good idea of current wind conditons

    http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/observations/sydney.shtml

MHL Tide Chart - Still use this but now I have the tide chart in PDF format on my iPhone (using GoodReader) I tend not to use this unless I need tomorrows tides and too lazy to look through the PDF

    http://www.mhl.nsw.gov.au/www/sydp_tide.htmlx

Buoyweather - Used to have an account for this (most surfers will remember the archbishopdesmondtutu@hotmail.com login) but don't have a paid account now so it's only a 2 day forecast. You can get long range data that is the same as this site if you download the Hurley Surf app for iPhone (paid version) and you can select each coastal area in Australia, however not as accurate as Seabreeze

    http://www.buoyweather.com/wxnav6.jsp?region=NSW&program=Maps

7 Day Synoptic - 7 day synoptic maps perfect for sussing out the BOM pressure, rain, wind direction ect

    http://www.weatherzone.com.au/synoptic/

Swell Data - Perfect if you are planning on heading offshore. Click "Wave Height" it's the chart I prefer to use

    http://www.surf-forecast.com/maps/Australia

    Sea Temp - MHL Buoy

    http://www.mhl.nsw.gov.au/www/wave_temp.htmlx

Sea Surface Temp - More detailed than the above, good if your heading wide offshore

    http://www.bom.gov.au/marine/sst.shtml

Bit more than you asked for but I'm sure theres enough there to help you out!

  9. This works for us every-time when we get em on the boat, also has worked off wharves as well

Burley with bread - White $1 stuff from supermarket, rub the bread in your hands and itll crumb up straight away, another way is soak the break in water and throw it at the surface really hard, itll break it up a bit, fish will go crazy on the bread (if you buy it the night before leave the bag open and itll go a bit stale and make it easier to crumb up)

Use a sabaki bait jig (6 hook) during summer most of the time you can catch yakkas with nothing on the jig just put a sinker on the bottom and drop it down. I usually use my kingy rod to get the yakkas because my lighter rods are set up for squid/trolling lures and I usually have a snap swivel to change the jig over and put my kingy rig on (I just like to be organised) - if you want to have "fun" catching bait then i guess you could use a light rod but to me it doesnt make a different, the fun starts when the yakkas get demolished by a kingy ;)

If the yakkas arent smashing the bait jig then cut it in half and fillet a pilly, cut into little 5mm cubes and put them on the hooks (reason you need to cut the jig in half is you cant bait more than 3 hooks at a time on the one rig)

Keep the burley going, the more burley the crazier the fish go ! get the jig right into the middle of the bait ball and you should hook up. The fish will get in a complete frenzy and depending on the spot your at we had yakkas tailor and kings all round us last time we went out.

I was catching heaps of yakkas the other day at roseville on a size 4 suicide hook with half a peeled prawn, but i was targeting bream mainly

  10. The idea for another bracket similar to the transducer mount on the opposite side is in consideration it wouldn't weigh much as but the big downer is cost.

Screwing it is ideal but like I said above my mate isn't too keen to screw another bracket on as there is already one screwed on, however he might change his mind after we lose another $40 pickup if the glue fails again haha !

We'll see how the sika flex lasts with a better bonding surface and let everyone know how it's goes, appreciate all the input and will definately post up a build thread in the coming month

  11. Thanks heaps for that.. I only had an hour or 2 of daylight left yesterday so figured I'd head to somewhere I knew and save pittwater for another day. And I'm still in shock! I caught more fish at narrabeen in that 2 hrs than I ever have lol

What were you catching at Narrabeen ? Only ever had luck at mid Narrabeen never up near the lake entrance, any whiting?
