  1. The best way to deal with an occy is to put it in a plastic bag squeeze the air out and tie it tight. If you get all the air out they're gone in 30 seconds and no wrestling with them except maybe getting them in the bag.

I will try this next time. Thanks for that tip.

  2. Nice fish mate! Is a jewfish a regular thing on lures? I'm just starting to get into chasing them and would love to have a crack at as many techniques and combinations to find my preferred choice!

I'm not sure! In the last 3 months I have pulled 6 out and the biggest went around 90cm (i'm guessing). Always go there chasing flathead but have been getting s few of then along the way.

Maybe some other Raiders my be able to help on this one. But I do know that they are only there on the run out tide. Sorry I can't help any more then that wish i could.

  3. Is the actual wharf under construction? Does this mean no fishing on it for now??

Definitely mate! Some old timers rate it as good as squid for jews. The tentacles are the best part. Good bream on it too!

Always catch them but always put back never use them for bait. Might have to try it one time.

  4. yea balmoral has been doing quite well. its under construction now, but i usually casting from the fishing wharf down the side of the wharf towards the shore. theres a weed bed in the shallows, then an edge, then another weed bed, plus the structure of the wharf. ideal for squid. managed to get 6 last week, all from shallows over weed beds. also got a huge octopus which i thought was going to be the world record squid cus of its weight. but it was an occy :(

    Are Occy good for bait?

  5. Hay Guys,

Went for a spinn last night down at Windang with a mate and brother-in-law. Weather reports did say 16kph winds it was more like 30kph. We drove for 40min so there was no way i was not going to flick for a while. First cast got a solid hit then a nice run on my 4kg gear after a 5min fight against the fish and current landed a nice 70cm Jewfish. Between the 3 of us we managed a few flathead each between us over a few hours.

By the end off it could not waut to get back in the car to defrost but it was a good night with mates.

  6. Nicely put together Matt.

Have to give a huge thanks to Nanook for taking me out on Saturday afternoon. As well as showing me the basics, with patience, enthusiasm and a great eye for detail he’s great company and it was a pleasure to spend a few hours talking outdoor experiences, Fishraider politics, Fishraider personalities and the make-up of a great report (even at the cost of a few missed “downs”).

It was also very generous of Matt to offer the whole catch to me, though this proved a bit more work than the usual 2-3 flathead I pick-up in a session. Two and a half hours of filleting practice early Sunday morning left me with way too many fillets to eat fresh so I rallied the troops and fed them a simple meal. Next time I’ll only be taking a couple of fish home.

Looking forward more Blackfish sessions in the future. Visual, exciting and delicious.

Mate that feed looks great

Ill take you fishing for flats and you can take me for Blackfish how dose that sound.

  7. awesome work

can't believe you braved the wind and cold there

what size jigs were you using? were you flicking close to the pylons? Thought it would have been hard given the westerly

Could not sleep so headed. Forgot all about it when i was hooked up.

I was using 9grm jig heads with 2inch Berkley banana prawns. Casting a little out from the bridge and letting it drift in towards the bridge.

  8. Whats it like fishing there of a night???

    Crowded??

My last night session there involved some verbal abuse towards a 14 yr old family member who was just sitting watching me fish thus I have not been back since.

    What rig did you use?

Would a paternoster set up work for jews in the channel?

Last dumb question the run out tide at Windang is going from high to low is that correct?

    Thanks

    El Feroz

I find in winter there is no one there or its not as crowded like summer. I was flicking soft plastics around and a Paternoster rig with a live bait or a really fresh bait i think would work. Not a dumb question but it was going from hi to low i hope that helps. Good luck :biggrin2:

  9. Hay Guys..

Went for a fish with my mate Ruki on Friday night. Blowing 30kph and only being 5 degrees still decided to go and glad i did.

Got down to Windang around 11:30 and tried to fish with the wind ended up with 2 Flathead in the bucket. Ruki got there about 1am and the tide started to run out and was really dirty. No hits for about 2 hours thinking that it was going to be one of those nights and with the water getting more dirty by the second.

So me and my mate decided to try the deep channel for one last try. Flicked in my soft plastic had a little bump then bang line start screaming of my little reel. After a short fight manage to land a little 52cm Jewfish. My mates turn, pulls a 78cm after a 5min fight. for the next hour we pull 3 each, lose 6 or 7 bigger fish and released around 12 smaller fish in the best fishing session i have ever had. My three when 52 55 and 65cm

  10. Great feed of flathead fillets

Your wife sounds like mine who has taken a liking to flattie fillets lately.

Last catch my wife claimed the large flatties before the fish were split up between all on board.:thumbup::thumbup:

    Chris.

    lol

My wife hates the fact that i go fishing she call it my other woman. Yeah she likes the fillets for a red curry. She makes the best curry's nice and traditional as her heritage is Camo/Loas. Great food and plenty of it
