Thanks Zoran.  To be honest I can't remember if it was 75, it was 70-something!

I have a GME GX700, which are designed in Australia so I would think it's set to Australia. But, I've just looked in the manual and will check next time that it isnt on USA.

    Cheers

Sure please do.....Its a user set up feature.... GME doesn't know where you will use the radio ... and I am sure they sell their radios world wide.

I found the same thing recently. Met another boat out at 12mile and as we were heading off to a new spot we decided to stay in radio contact to let them know once we got there. We picked a random channel - 75 - and couldn’t communicate. Then we changed to channel 80 and we could communicate fine - but there was a heap of other morons on there talking s***, they sounded like they were all at Terrigal wide.

Hi Smasher.... sounds like you or the other boat have the VHF radio set to USA.  I suggest that you please check your settings.

This is the Aus VHF spectrum:

    IMG_7422.PNG.93e1f51b56d779ef21f65458664b99fb.PNG

There is no channel 75 and 80 is a talk through repeater.... so the chatter you were hearing on 80 is what was being rebroadcast through the repeater.

Here is the chart from the link I posted previously:

    IMG_7913.thumb.PNG.aad25b88d2dd3655779261fd9f437c65.PNG

It shows in USA mode there is a simplex channel 75 and a simplex channel 80.

  3. I don't have a navman unit so answering generically.  If it's powering up, but not picking up satellites and generally not working right it just may be hung - it happens to mine occasionally - just like PCs, or any modern software driven gizomos.  With mine I have learnt that if I can't get to my 2nd level menus it means its hung ... and I have noticed it happens when the unit has had a few days in the hot sun (40+C) if I have left it mounted in the boat.

Have a look through your manual and look for a soft reset procedure - this reboots but preserves all your way points etc. You may need to reenter some settings though.

After the reboot check your satellite connections.

    Best of luck.

    Cheers

  4. Ha ha ha !   Good one Fab.  My Mrs and I see it as an investment in our leisure!

BTW I do believe in buying quality and buying once - that doesn’t mean buying the most expensive.

That gear was accumulated over 30+ years.  Eg  my first overhead a Penn 320GTI bought 1986, the  twin Penn 45GLS in 1996, the twin 330GTIs 2005 - all going strong as I do regular maintenance. One of the 330s landed a 70kg marlin in 2015.  The rods are mostly Penn and Silstar. I find the Penn gear indestructible if washed down after each trip, oiled and given some maintenance every 18-24mths.

PS - guess some will now call me OCD and a hoarder !

  5. Purchase that one - Alvey Reef King - spooled with 2000m of 200lb braid.

I just added the boom and pulleys on top as I found it unwieldly trying to use it with the bottom mounted short s/s spigot that it comes with. I also knocked up the ply frame it sits in - found it a lot easier to transport that way (the reel is heavy!!!).

The Alvey is my rig for Browns - I am very old school in regard to deep dropping - and get heaps from all my mates for not going electric. But there's just something special about bringing up a fish that way vs electric...and after using it I don't need to go to the gym for an upper body workout!

Here's a clip from a few years back - ffwd the boring bits (2:00 Alvey in use, 4:30 the catch of the day) - its what I call the Alvey Reef King vs Miya Epoch 8 .... I out-fished them that day - he he he !!!

Certainly seems like a far more complex question than I anticipated!

At the time i purchased my boat the dealer told me i can operate the boat on a single battery so hence my question. I currently run on both batteries

One thing that i didnt mention (and assume has some impact on the end answer) is that my ETEC G2 150 HO produces 133 amps, 50amps of which are purely dedicated to battery charge and operations of equipment whilst the motor is running.

With 50amp spare coming off the motor and with only two touch screens running id be surprised if i ever ran out of battery running a single battery? But when it comes to electrical engineering i am absolutely illiterate so i could be 100% wrong

Zoran thx for the offer and will do a bit of homework on how everything is currently wired up on my boat before i come over for a beer so that all my answers arent "not sure il have to check and get back to u" haha ?‍♂️

    PS - i dont have a VSR

Sure. No probs.  Once we chat it will probably generate a bunch of questions and you'll probs be talking to Evinrude anyway - I know I rang Mercury to validate some things about how my motor would behave under certain battery conditions. That article you snapped mentions 50AMPs dedicated to charging the "house" battery. That's usually a term reserved for dual battery set ups, where one battery is a starter and the other the house battery. So the implication seemed to be that e-tecs run with 2 ...But I did a quick google and it showed a typical e-tec G2 installation wiring with just one battery...  so I think you have 50AMPs charge output for battery(s) in total and the other 73AMPs go to driving the electronics on the motor itself.

    5a5da8b400261_e-TECG2installationwiring.png.d9715db8315e532b5882449995759252.png

But if the manuals that came with the motor also show a wiring diagram it would be good if you could snap and send that to me - or bring it along.

Generally with such hi AMP out motors the G2 (or even my 1999 Merc which puts out 40AMP) you don't have a problem with a battery running flat when the motor is working or has worked for a while and recharged the battery(s)...and the few low AMP devices you are running are unlikely to drain your battery.  The consideration really come down to being clear about what scenarios you want to protect your self from and your style of fishing.

  7. Hi Sam,

I run with both batteries on since installing the Anchor Winch (but in hindsight perhaps I should have been running that way all the time because of the specific characteristics of the motor that I have). I have no VSR.  There are several other considerations than just power drain/consumption requirements in deciding how you want to run. There are also different types of VSRs out there now, and depending which type you have and how your boat is wired can also be a consideration.

I'm happy to draw and talk through a few circuit diagrams and their pros and cons with we meet up next week.

If you have time, rather then point you at the whole www have a read of the discussion on this recently in response to Bear's question here:

If its urgent... give me a call tonight.

    Cheers

  8. Great stuff @antonywardle and thank you for the mention.  Maybe you saw it when you popped over and the boat was hooked up - battle ready for a trip the next day. Hmmm good idea to repurpose the PVC pipe - I will have to remember and keep that idea in the kit bag.

I do indeed have a utility holder mounted on my bait board....knife, ikijime, split ring pliers, hook removal pliers, bait needle. I have also mounted a port nav light (red) for visibility when night fishing (preserves night vision), and a tap for a quick rinse of the hands. The switches for the light and tap/deckwash/live bait tank are all mounted on top of the light fitting.

PS - I had just upgraded the 330GTI to carbontex the previous weekend -- it got hot on the first few runs (you could smell the hot grease) but it held up !

  10. Just depends mate. The hooks on my lures get inspected and if serviceable get a touch up with the stone. Same for my deep drop rigs for Browns. These hooks tend to be bigger and meatier - more metal.

However I find the smaller hooks that I use for bait fishing generally start to rust out so not really worth sharpening and they get tossed. I prefer to NOT use stainless hooks for bait fishing (bream flatties snapper etc) as these hooks don’t rust out if bitten off.

  11. But could you talk (send receive) to marine rescue on 16?   Just want to make sure your set is working 100%.

It sounds like you both have the VHF sets setup differently -- one is set to USA and the other to INT.

You both should be on INT in Australia.

Channel 16 (rescue) and 10 are simplex operation in INT and USA settings - so ship to ship (your antenna to his antenna). Hence you could listen talk to marine rescue and your mate (line of sight).

Most other stations in Aust are repeater stations - so you are transmitting on one channel and your VHF radio is listening to the repeater signal on another channel.  The repeater signals are different if you are in USA or INT mode.  So to use the Aust repeaters you BOTH need to be in INT mode.

Hope that helps....  I found this link useful when I was studying this stuff:  http://www.thecoastalpassage.com/vhf.html

  12. Nice one Sam.. (even a good read the 2nd time round!). Wise move to call it and head back in with the pending weather change even though it goes against the grain of a fisho sometimes.  Better luck next time getting on a fin.

  13. Thanks...always looking for new / upgraded ramps....been told that at Tunks parking can get narky and also I have a pretty long rig (approx 8m of boat trailer) so may be tight getting thru the suburban streets ..  currently I launch at  Forestville (Davidson Ramp)  when doing middle harbour and out wide from Sydney...

    Cheers and thanks for sharing.

  14. Thanks for the report sam_bros.  Good stuff.  I have not had much luck with bonnies or kingies so far this year ... so missing the action and love hearing/reading about it.

For me - fresh bled and iced bonnie fillets - basted with a bit of garlic and parsley - thrown on the BBQ flesh down then flipped to crisp the skin are .

BTW - what ramp is that?

  16. My knife sharpening jig.  Has 3 blade angle settings. Takes a standard bunnings or disposal store sharpening stone - preferably coarse and fine grit.

    Cost:

    $10 Grind stone

    $0  Junk offcut stud

    $0  Junk offcut ply riser

$0  Junk alloy curtain rod offcut

    $2  Scraper blade holder

    $1  8 screws assorted sizes

$0  Labour:  to drill the blade holder, hole saw the guide holes and screw the jig together (but it took 2 beers !!!)

    ===

    $13

Not taking anything away from the electric gizomos but seriously guys if these types of jigs work for the Japanese Katana swords, I think they do just fine for my fishing knives (and since I built it and Mrs has seen it, I can confirm they also work fine for the kitchen knives).

    Cheers

..... Everytime I head odd, it's never as calm as it looks in fishing report pics.

Hmmm  not sure what to say mate... you gotta pick your time and place I guess...

I can say heading out it was choppy near the heads and for about 1-2km past. It always is with any breeze and tide movement as the heads are quite shallow so the water builds up.  But once past there and away from the bounce back swell it generally calms down.  The area we were fishing is also quite protected from a N-NE wind and at 6kts it barely stirs the water.  But mind you, the charts show that area (West Reef) can be "dangerous seas" --- an incoming tide with a southerly would get it cranking nicely.

I tend to pick the fishing spots based on the forecast conditions and fine tune when we get there...eg if forecast is for an afternoon 6kts N in morning and  NE 14kts arvo .... I head in the N or E direction in the morning (against the lighter wind)....I would not head south in the morning only to have to punch into the stronger NE driven chop in the arvo.

NIce report mate and good bag!

I’ve fished West reef a few times now and haven’t come up with anything good! Has anyone had any luck here and if so what species???

A few weeks back I posted in @antonywardlepost on Box Head Wide ... also put a picture there of us at the fish cleaning tables - the guys next to us had a good mixed bag - trevally, morwong, snapper, flathead, kingy etc but were "mum" about where they were fishing - they only mentioned 27m and that they had seen my boat.  So I tried to triangulate of those data points and figured it had to be a broken reef structure with sand inbetween at 27m that had visibility of me fishing 4km out from barrenjoey.  Figured it was West Reef.  So maybe it fires up at times - but not last Friday !!!

Well done Zoran.....really niece feed there, yum!

Did the better half out fish you on this occasion? :fisher::icon_razz: :D

Well we both caught 7 flatties but I caught the flounder as well - so on a fish count I am up, but then she caught the biggest fish of the day so I reckon caught weight wise we are about the same.... BUT as I carefully pointed out to her she managed to have 4 massive tangles (which I had to undo) and I had none... so I reckon I'm just a tad infront on the penalty count.

Generally speaking though she does well - and strangely enough always gets the oddball fish of the day eg the barracouta..... come to think about it maybe that's how she ended up with me as well !

I also saw another one on facebook last week where the NSW FIisheries lost their boat off the trailer. Someone mentioned that it happened on Parramatta Rd.....geeeez, that would have been a sight to see. Some red faces by the boys in blue, lol :074:
