  1. Hi raiders What a day....got a good dose of some much needed rod bendage! I was lucky enough to let the kids go today and also escaped the baron of finance. I got out late to austi rocks to collect my cabbage and string weed for both bait n burley. All in all there was that much I didnt even finish my coffee and I was ready to leave. Got to my beloved spot about 20 mins later and was greeted by a familiar face, the usual fishos still trying to get their kingys and whatever. Always been good to fish with them as we work in well and no one hogs the spot or gets in the way. One of the gang was asking my advice on black fishing. So I showed him my rig and tried to sound like I know what I am doing....it didnt hurt that every demo drift I was getting really hard downs..at which point I decided to get serious. I was struggling after this point for a bout 20 mins until I had my first on, one of the gang came over and netted it for me so I was one in the bag. I got another soon after and decided I would try some of the slated yakka I recently brined up. The kingys and frigates that I could see zooming passed didnt seem interested. They were chasing bait fish the size of a prawn. I switched back tot he Gary Howard and started drifting again. At this point a large boat came passed and I was on as its wake smashed the shore. After this guys it went dead for an hour as the tide changed and the water got cloudy. I thought at this stage...hmmm ill win some points with the baron and go home and mow the lawn.....but after one last cast. Well that was it, I went on a streak dropping fish, getting busted off and pulling some in plus letting some smaller models go. I also rigged up a yakka on a paternoster set up on my other rod and ended up getting a flounder. He wasnt the biggest however the damage the hook caused and the fact he fell between rocks meant he was well and truly finished when I finally recovered it. Would have preferred sent it back as it was right on legal and I usually like to give a cm or two. By now it was two hours after I first decided to leave. I thought again...one last cast and I was on again. The fish dove hard and fast and felt like a bloody train and then SNAP....lost the hooks and decided to go home. All up I would have hooked up to 20 fish dropping some, releasing some and keeping some for the family. BTW the solo cans arent mine they were there with the rest of the shit some grub left behind. All in all one of the best days fishing I have had and my first bag out. Was satisfying as the fish all went to three different families so was good to give them out. Steve
  2. What a shame. This site picked me up and threw me into this hobby 6 yrs ago when i wasnt doing real well. Gave me a new thing to focus on and learn. Maybe a facebook page could be made. Now sadly ill be remembered as the bloke with the rock cale record....was hoping to upgrade to bream or luderick one day....oh well.
  3. Good work...all that rod bendage would have tested the heart. Looked like a great day.
  4. Thanks I hooked up a lure to my black fishing rod after seeing the frigates today. 20lb mono but i put 20lb fluro and a spanyid lure.i has the crossfire hooked on. It flung out for miles but i was worried if i hooked up how the garry howard would handle it. Was fun aiming at the bust ups.
  5. Flat water. With the rough water outside these guys took refuge in a sheltered part of the breakwall where i usually find them.
  6. Went to my usual spot today. Weed was hard to come by but I got some soft shitty stuff from a drain. Whilst rigging up I got to watch a school of frigates mack swim by followed by a few kingies about a meter long. They were so close i could have grabbed them right up against the rocks. Any way i watched a few bust ups while my float seemed to run out faster than i like. I adjusted the depth and kept losing bait. Soft stuff dont last long or hold well. I decided to change how i rig up the the weed. It was almost like clay in some bits so it would mash on the hook. Poor weed but i was desperate. It seemed to do the trick and i then started get bites, downs and hook ups like nothing else.i know they are back now so ill get some good weed and hopefully land some more. Landing them with my left whilst netting with my right hand was an experience but i have mastered it so i no longer need my mates help to land them.
  7. Sounds familiar mate. In these days i usually pull in small ones. Where i fish they go off weed until feb march. Prior to this they prefer worms or other bait so i luck out. Follow the advice above. Sometimes they are just picky or maybe a bloke before you burleyed like demon and fed them up.
  8. Hi guys As you may have noticed by sime if my newb posts recently im feciding to give spinning a crack. Any one got feedback on the Daiwa crossfire and sweepfire reels for spinning? I use these as my blackie reels as im a collector of alveys rather than a user atm. I have a number of general purposr rods ranging from 8 to 12 foot i can set these to and im planning on running 30 lb braid to a 20 mono leader using a raider lure. I think ill eventually need a decent spinning rid if i get into it. Was considering bait under a float but not so sure on this set up.
  9. How would you compare the fight to that of a large luderick on 4 lb? Similar battle or just different moreso than harder or easier....just curious as i dont suceed with pelagics other than salmon. Nice report and fish btw. You are lucky to have a good cook to reward your hard work.
  10. Yeh i had a bloke have go at me fir wearing kleats. Said if i needed them i should be fishing there......i was more worried about the lures flying mm past my head or drowning moreso than being a hard ass.
  11. Thanks for the responses. Im needing to take a day off and thought I would try spinning rather than my recent default of black fishing. Its been a long while since my disasterous debut at bass point so hoping i can redeem myself.
  12. Hi all Have the frigates and bonnies arrived at bass point? I heard the kingys have been a while but nothing else. Im thinking of a mid week fish next week.
  13. True I mostly like the prep and anticipation e.g getting the weed prep the burley get to the spot but the best is the downs and rod bendage. I once commented on here a few yrs ago i was sick of catching salmon everytime i hit stanwell pk beach. After that post i didnt get another for 18 months....the lesson was learnt then now i enjoy the beach and the wind down waiting for the rod to buckle. Its also the only fishing you can do witha beer or playing with the kids.
  14. I had multiple failures on this knot when spinning but the reason was i was rushing. Ab knot with 8 to 10 turns up and down and put the tail back in the same wayit enters works for me. I test my knots with a 5 and 10 kg dumbbell. Good luck next time.
  15. I saw you all as i was leaving the northern breakwall. Was fishing for luderick on tbe inside near the customs bit. Saw a heap of at Kings swim by about 1 meter from the shore. Also heaps of small yakkas harrassing my float. It looked like fun from what i could see. You went out pretty far too. If i wasn't shark phobic id go out also.
  16. I used to catch 50 cm models in Macquarie riverlet. I used a bobby cork with 1 m line under it and a decent sinker. I then threw out bread heavily dusted in flour and i mixed dough around stale white bread. The would boil up like salmon and id then get a good run of fish. Back then i kept no records and used k mart grab n go rods n reels so i can't help with tides or other info. We'd get the in summer and autumn as i recall being concerned about lizards n snakes.
  17. Well the downs were there but the swell and wind made sure i was getting tangled so i left to my usual spot. Looks good but next time I will try a 1.5m swell and hopefully a ne wind. I found good weed abd a decent ledge that gets the wash.
  18. Well if nothing else I can put tomorrow down in the diary as a success or failure and tick some things of the list wgen I head back the next time.
  19. Off the rocks on the south end I front of where the headlands hotel used to be at austinmer.
  20. Hi Im pkanning on hitting the rocks off austinmer for some blackfish tomorrow. Dont have any time during the day other than from 0700 to 1000. Tide will be approaching its lowest point by 0945. Would it be worth having a shot? My plan b is to go for worms and whiting from the beach at corrimal.
  21. Salmon were on last time i was there. Ganged pillie (brine) done the job
  22. Not sure but its always got ppl there especially at night. What were you targeting? Looks like a good blackfishing spot to me.
  23. I really need a new spot......i only get a few at my harbour spot. Well done guys. Never cooked thwm like that but it looks good. Will try next time.

    Snakes

A 30 cm brown has enough venom to put you down in a big way. Lucky you got away with that one.
  25. Do you need a nig tide? Ive seen them caught on a low but there some russian fellows that used to fish it on a dangerously high tide.
