  1. Personally i'd prefer to use a thredline reel for all my spinning...for larger species like you have listed i'd probably go with a shimano spheros 14000fa. Id prefer to use a thredline simply for the fact i hate over runs on overhead styled reels...but im sure if you know how to work an overhead reel properly someone could suggest a good reel. cheers james

  6. Hi guys Decision was made a few nights back that we would go out saturday (today) and have a troll around. After hearing reports of wahoo, yft and mackerel hopes were pretty high. Unable to get a full crew of 4 it was just me and dad. Dropped the boat in the water at 6.30 started our troll about 5 miles off the seaway heading to one of the reefs on the 36 fathom line SE of the seaway arrived at the 24 fathom line to find a few boats including charter boats fishing in the one small area a quick troll around revealed nothing so we sounded around for some bait...found a awsum school with lots of fish round the outside of the sounder.....down go the jigs jigged for about 15-20 mins but the current was at about 2 knots so it was hard 2 stay on the spot for a decent ammount of time. Out with the skirts and divers again and we decided to head north between the 24 and 36 fathom lines. Got directly off the seaway about 15 mile out and ZZZZZZZZZ were on jump n the rod to find the fish had spat the hook ohh well marked it on the plotter and decided to do a big circle around the area ZZZZZZZZ off goes another rod just mins after the first get a small mack tuna to the boat...into the esky he goes. Decided this seemed a good spot so started to do our cirlce work again and ZZZZZZZZZZZ dad hooks up and fights a small yft of about 10kg to the side of the boat but unfortunatly hooks pull and fish gets away. The first hookup happend about about 10am fished till 11.30 in that area landing 2 mack tuna, 2 striped tuna and dropping 4 other fish. Dad hooked a screema at the end of the session peeling about 150meters of line off in only a few seconds but once again LOST IT Water was between 24degs and25degs. Great 2nd session out off the goldcoast....learnt a few things... will see how we go next time. I will post a few picks up later on. cheers james

  9. Yes it's a big change from sydney, fishing is so different ......the gamefishing has been a shocker heard lots of reports of mack tuna in close, spanish mackrel and cobia on the reefs...the key is lumo beads i have been told but im sure if u experiment u will find the right way. cheers james
  10. Got sharked twice today. 9/4/08 This morning my little brother jacob thought he saw a shark....i was thinkin he was pulling my leg but i had some time 2 kill so took out a reasonable sized outfit...caught myself some poddy mullet through em out on a set of gangs with a wire trace....tied my rod off to the jetty pole with the ratchet on and went inside to carry on with what ever comes along constantly checking the rod went back out 40 mins later and noticed my line was slowely moving against the tidal flow OHHH $#T untie the rod and start fighting but bites through the wire....clean cut...happend twice over the space of about 4 hours. I will give it another go tomorrow and hopefully i will have pics to post tomorrow night. cheers james
  11. Hi guys Well finally moved up to the gold coast 4-5 weeks ago. Im telling you now it's sooo different to sydney in everyway it's just all really laid back and touristy. Anyway i'll get to the fishing side of things. Iv fished probably once every 2 days land based and in this time iv learnt alot and caught a variety of fish ranging from bream, whiting, garfish, longtom, BIG poddies, tailor, mud crabs, eels and a motza of fish i have never seen before. I fish landbased off a jetty into one of the canals leading to the broadwater some of my memorable catches in the past 4-5 weeks would be longtom i have sight fished ranging from 20cm - 52 cm....some MONSTER bream hang around under the moored boats and pylons i reckon they would be close to 50cm but i am yet to break the 35cm mark....theres plenty of garfish, mullet, herring around if you burly with bread. you have to go as light as possible to chase these fish i use 6lb gear and have been told it's still way to heavy....but if i do somehow hook up to something big for example a hard fighting mangrove jack or one of the larger trevally swimming around i want to land the fish. On easter we took the boat out...as we were leaving the spit and rigging up to have a troll with various sized skirts and divers i spotted alot of birds in the one area above a bust up......not sure what it was....to slow to get the gear ready but i will be prepared next time. So we started our troll towards a reef on the 24 fathom line troleld for 4 hours using laser pro divers and various skirts from 4-8inch's in a variety of colours. Had abit of a bottom bash using squid, mullet, pillies for bait and tried abit of jigging around bait schools didn't do to well...then the wind picked up so we shot back inside. Had a fish around the breakwalls inside the spit hoping for a nice bream or one of the big trevally i have heard about also have heard reports of big jewies off the south wall. Managed a few bream from 15cm-30cm and a few fish iv never seen before. I will post many more reports of the fishing around here...hoping to get offshore this weekend so hopefully will have a report to put up on sunday night. cheers james

    Burley Pot

I have heard some stories about guys who have done that and had sharks attack the pot...hence loosing the anchor. I made my own pots one is a plumbing pipe about 2liter bottle round sized round with holes drilled all over and chicken wire cable tied to the top and bottom with a rock in it....works fine. Another one i made is made of chicken wire once again about a 2liter bottle round but the base and lid is all made of chicken wire and cable ties i use a chunk of lead to hold this on the bottom. You can get bags in ultrabite kits that workwell but you need to use a rock as a weight. I use to use a plastic bag with holes in it tied to a rope with a rock as a weight worked fine. cheers james
